As the children arrive, invite each one to take a Secret Messages sheet and a pencil or pen. Encourage them to use the key to decode the secret messages. What do you think it would have been like to try to decode the secret messages without the key? Invite responses. Have you ever read something and had a hard time understanding what it meant? Or have you ever read something in a language you didn t know? Invite responses. Option 2: Write a Secret Message (for Older Kids) Secret Messages sheet (see Resource Files) paper (1 sheet per child) pens optional: Create a Code sheet (see Resource Files) PREPARE AHEAD Print one copy of the Secret Messages sheet for each child. The Big God Story Bible Passage: Genesis 11 12; 15 Storytelling Technique: Props, Key Words, Images, and Audio Look up at the ceiling. Pretend to be counting or calculating the distance from the floor to the ceiling. How tall do you think this ceiling is? Invite responses. Good guesses. If I need to get up to the ceiling, what would be the best way? Invite responses. Good thoughts! What about the building we re in how tall do you think it is? Invite responses. Many years ago, in The Big God Story, a group of people decided they wanted to be able to reach up to the heavens. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The first people lived in perfect relationship with Him until they chose to disobey Him, and sin came into the world. When sin came into the world, it broke the people s perfect relationship with God. But God, our Creator, loves His people very much. He promised to send a Redeemer to save people from sin and heal their relationship with God. God is amazing and worthy of worship! Before we hear more, let s pray together. Lead the kids in a Prayer of Release. Years passed, and the people of the world continued to disobey God. They began to worship pretend gods. On one side of your speaking area, place the Disobey box on the floor near the front of the stage to create the base of your tower. On top of it, place the Turn Away box. Make sure the words face the children. You see, God is worthy of worship. But after people started sinning, they also became confused and started to worship false gods. They even started to worship themselves! This happened to the people who lived in an area called Shinar. Place the Shinar box on the tower with the word facing the kids. The people living in the land of Shinar could have chosen to worship the one true God, because He s worthy of worship, but they didn t. They chose to worship false gods and themselves. Place the False Gods and Me boxes on the tower. Invite the kids to turn to Genesis 11 and follow along as you read verse 4. The people wanted to be famous, so they started to build a huge tower. The building may have looked something like this. Tech: Cue Ziggurat slide and Building with Bricks audio. Place the Tall Tower box on the tower. God came down to see the tower. Read Genesis 11:7 aloud while the kids follow along. Imagine that! How weird would it be if you were standing at the top of a ziggurat and said to your friend, Hand me a brick! but your words came out in German Gib mir einen Backstein (geeb-meer-eye-nen-back-schtein) or French Donnez-moi une brique (doo-nay-mwah-oon-breek). Do you think you would be able to finish building if you couldn t speak your friend s language? Invite responses. Probably not! So, by confusing their languages, God kept the tower and the city from being built. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 11:8 9 aloud. The place was called Babel, which means confused. Place the Babel box on the tower. And God scattered the people all over the earth. After the people scattered, God revealed a plan to send a Redeemer to fix people s broken relationship with Him. God called a man named Abram to be a part of His big plan. On one side of your speaking area, place the boxes that say Big Plan and Abram on the floor, side-by-side, to create the base of your altar. Keep the words facing the children. Abram lived in a place called Ur with his nephew Lot and his wife Sarai. One night, God spoke to Abram. Invite kids to turn to Genesis 12:1 3 and follow along as you read these verses. God had a special promise for Abram. He called Abram to leave the country he knew so God could start a new nation of people who would 5

worship only Him because He is worthy of worship. Place the boxes that say New Nation and Worship on the altar. So Abram obeyed God and followed Him to a land called Canaan (Genesis 12:5). Have the kids stand and march in place for a moment. Then have them sit down. Later, God told Abram He would give him so many descendants, or family members, that counting them would be like trying to count the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:5). Have the kids look up for a moment as if they re trying to count the stars in the sky. Then have them sit down. God also promised to give them a land to live in (15:7). Wow! Place the Descendants and Promise boxes on altar. Abram believed God and worshipped Him right there by building something called an altar. Tech: Cue Altar slide and Rocks Being Stacked audio. Abram worshipped God because He is wonderful, powerful, and mighty. God created us to be in relationship with Him, and He is worthy of worship. Leader Tip In Genesis 17, God changed Abram s name to Abraham, which means father of many. He also changed Sarai s name to Sarah. Let your kids know that Abram and Sarai are also known as Abraham and Sarah in The Big God Story. Stand behind the tower of boxes. The people at Babel worshipped false gods and themselves. Stand behind the altar of boxes. Abram worshipped God by building an altar and choosing to obey Him. Stand behind the tower again. At Babel, the people only cared about themselves. Stand behind the altar again. So, from Abram whose name God would later change to Abraham God started a family line from which the Redeemer would eventually be born. God knew that this Redeemer, Jesus Christ, would turn people s hearts back to God so they would worship only Him. Add the Jesus and Altar boxes to the altar, creating a fourth and final layer. God had a plan to bring people into relationship with Him so they could worship Him alone. He is worthy of all worship and praise! Worship Response Tech: Cue music. After The Big God Story, lead right into worship through singing. Then pause before continuing. We re going to continue worshipping God. But before we do, we re going to talk a little bit about what it might look like to worship God mind, soul, and body. Have you ever wondered why your parents or other adults raise their hands in worship or get down on their knees? Sometimes people choose to show their worship to God with their bodies by kneeling, bowing down, raising their hands or faces, standing up, bowing their heads, etc. When we begin to worship again, if you decide you would like to worship God with your whole body, feel free to raise your hands, kneel down, or bow your head. Or you may choose to worship God quietly while sitting or standing. You may also choose to sing out loud or quietly. However you choose to respond to God in worship is between you and Him. Resume your worship time, and encourage leaders to model various postures of worship for the children. 7

Respond// 15 20 min. SMALL GROUP SECTION Reflect: God Is Worthy of Worship God created us to be in perfect relationship with Him, and He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to restore that relationship. He deserves our worship! Encourage the kids to open their Bibles and read the suggested passages. Questions for Younger Kids How did the first people break their perfect relationship with God? Genesis 3:6 How did God restore this relationship? John 3:16 What did the people in Shinar decide to do to make themselves famous? Genesis 11:4 What did God do to stop the people from building the tower? Genesis 11:7 8 Why did God call Abram to leave his family? Genesis 12:1 3 What does God say about worshipping other things or people? Luke 4:8 How can we worship God together? Questions for Older Kids How did the first people break their perfect relationship with God? Genesis 3:6 How did God restore this relationship? John 3:16 What did the people in Shinar decide to do to make themselves famous? Genesis 11:4 What did God do to stop the people from building the tower? Genesis 11:7 8 What are some ways people today worship themselves? Why did God call Abram to leave his family? Genesis 12:1 3 Why does God give us the desire to worship Him? How can we worship God together? How can we worship God by ourselves? Create: Daily Worship butcher paper (at least 3 more for bigger groups) tape markers SET UP Tape the butcher paper to the wall at a height the kids can reach. God is worthy of our worship. He s amazing! And He goes everywhere with us. Where are some places we worship God? Think about this question for a few minutes. Once the children have had a couple of moments to ponder this question, invite them to come to the butcher paper, take markers, and draw outlines of those places. Some examples include school, home, a park, church, sports fields, dance studios, or grocery stores. Next, encourage kids to consider specific ways they can worship God when they re at those places. Invite them to write or draw their ideas inside the outlines they just drew. You might have the kids share their ideas one at a time with the group, or invite everyone to come up to the butcher paper together. 8

Bless// 5 min. SMALL GROUP SECTION Invite your children to participate in a call-and-response time based on Psalm 146. Tell kids that each time you pause, they can respond with these words: Praise Him, for He is good! Leader: Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Children: Praise Him, for He is good! Leader: Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them he remains faithful forever. Children: Praise Him, for He is good! Leader: He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. Children: Praise Him, for He is good! Leader: The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord. All: Praise Him, for He is good! Finally, end with this blessing. May you remember this week that God is worthy of your praise and worship. WEEKLY Be sure to send home the HomeFront Weekly for next week s lesson! This preteaching tool for parents encourages families to spend time in God s Word together before children arrive at church. 9
