MAMBALAM TIMES June 1-7, 2013 Street play on multiple sclerosis enacted in Natesan Park Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (Chennai Chapter, 30, North Boag Road, T. Nagar, Ph: 2815 6623) conducted a street play in Natesan Park (Venkatnarayana Road, T. Nagar) on May 30 to spread awareness about the disease. The play highlighted that the disease also known as The Crippler of the Young Adult is one of the most debilitating ones affecting persons between 18 and 40 years of age. It attracted a large audience. Rotary Central s blood donation program on Sunday Krishnapremi s jayanthi utsavam in Ayodhya Mandapam from June 5 Krishnapremi Swamigal Utsava Committee has organized for special programs from June 5 to August 26 at Ayodhya Mandapam (Arya Gowda Road, West Mambalam). The following are the daily programs from June 5 to 22: 5 a.m: Ganapathy homam. 8 a.m: Recital and discourse of Premika Granthas Play apparatus in Sir, With the traffic on the new Rangarajapuram flyover increasing each day, the traffic jam at Bazullah Road-Usman Road junction is becoming unbearable. This has also led to increase in noise and air pollution which are now constantly troubling the nearby residents. The lack of vision in the construction of the bridge is evident. Ideally the bridge should have crossed Usman Road and landed on the Main Bazullah Road. This would have made traffic flow easier from under Usman Road. Now the new Rangarajapuram subway which is under construction is going to add to the existing problems. After its completion, the entire traffic from West Mambalam side will arrive at Mambalam High Road and exit via Bazullah Road. Since the service lanes on either side of the Rangarajapuram flyover are narrow, the increase in traffic in this lane will make life miserable for the residents on either side of the flyover. Entering and exiting the apartments adjoining the service lane is going to become a major problem. In case of an emergency, fire engines and ambulances will find it very difficult to reach the spot in time and to park and offer their services. Students studying at Ramakrishna Mission School nearby will face a traumatic time negotiating the traffic. Hence I appeal to the Corporation officials to make Rangarajapuram subway a pedestrian-only subway and prohibit it from being used by vehicles. Sriram, 90, Bazullah Road, T. Nagar, Ph: 9840773410. Unauthorised hoarding on parapet wall of NSK flyover Sir, After a report in Mambalam Times a couple of months ago about an unauthorized hoarding on the parapet wall of NSK flyover on G. N. Chetty Road at its junction with Tirumalai Road (T. Nagar), the same was removed by the authorities. Now a new advertisement hoarding has appeared at the same place. If immediate action is not taken by Chennai Corporation officials, more such banners will appear all over the walls of the flyover making it not only an eyesore but also a distraction to drivers. There is also the risk of the banners falling down, leading to accidents. I hope that the Corporation authorities will act immediately to remove the hoarding and also take suitable action against the advertiser. A. K. Kulathu1, Sairam Apartments, 3, Valmiki Street, T. Nagar Rotary Central and TTK VHS Blood Bank will jointly conduct a blood donation program on Sunday, June 2, from 9.30 a.m to 1 p.m at Jubilee Clinic, 47, Jubilee Road, West Mambalam. Those who are in the age group of 18-65 and in good health can donate blood. Participants will be screened Talk on Thiru before blood is collected from Arutpa on Tuesday them. Under the auspices of Vallalar Sanmargasangam (V.O.C Street, MGR Nagar, Ph: 98403 66306), K. Kanniappan Jeeva Park damaged will give a discourse on Thiru Arutpa Aanmaye Orumaipatturimai on Tuesday, June 4, at 6 p.m in Sakthi Vinayagar temple (P.T. Rajan Salai, K.K. Nagar). LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Rangarajapuram subway should be made pedestrian-only Page 3 Sir, I have been taking my regular morning and evening walks in Jeeva Park (G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar) for the past several years. It used to be a pleasing sight in the evenings to see the kids enjoying themselves on the slides and the seesaws in the park. However owing to non-maintenance, most of the children s play apparatus have got damaged. With the ongoing school holidays and the scorching summer, the play apparatus in Jeeva Park is a source for entertainment for the neighbourhood children. So I appeal to Chennai Corporation authorities to take immediate action to repair them. R. Janardhanan, K. R. Koil Street, West Mambalam Councilor s actions praiseworthy Sir, This is to register my appreciation through Mambalam Times the incredible act of M. Gunasekaran (Chennai Corporation Councilor of Zone 10, Ward No. 131). Recently, I had brought to his notice that the property tax demand card for the financial years commencing from 2011-12 have not been distributed by the revenue department to the houses in the colony. To my surprise, he personally collected the old card from my house the same morning and personally delivered it to me in the evening. I found him to be a man of pleasing manners and have come to know that he makes regular inspection concerning civic problems within his jurisdiction and takes immediate measures to address the same. R. Sundararajan, 6th Sector, K. K. Nagar 2 p.m: Veda paarayanam. 7 p.m: Sampoorna Mahabharatha Pravachanam by Krishnapremi Swamigal. 9.30 p.m: Dolothsavam. Divyanama sankeerthanam will take place on ekadesi days and unjavrithi on dwadesi days. For more details, please call 2483 3756 / 98408 73376.

Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES June 1-7, 2013 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 55 When Ambikapathi was remade years later with Sivaji Ganesan and P.Bhanumathi repeating the roles of MKT Bhagavathar and Santhanalakshmi, strangely, TA Mathuram was to repeat her same role in the later version too, but the film did not do well at the box office. The MKT version was still too green in the memory banks of Tamil moviegoers. Interestingly, though T. A. Mathuram and N. S. Krishnan, the greatest comedy pair of Indian Cinema as well as husband and wife in real life, were cast in the original Ambikapathi, they were not paired together as they were in other films. Indeed, they never meet on screen in Ambikapathi. Krishnan played a wanderer falling in love with the buxom wife of a friend, played by P. R. Mangalam. The friend was played by P. G. Venkatesan, a fine singer, known as the Saigal of South India. Krishnan s interest in the woman and the progress of their love affair were conveyed in detail to the man by Krishnan himself, blissfully unaware that his friend was the woman s husband! A nice bit of comedy superbly done by Krishnan. When screened at the International Film Festival 1991 in Madras, the packed South Indian Film Chamber Auditorium rocked with laughter watching NSK s comedy. His comedy remained as fresh as ever and the reception accorded to it during the Festival clearly showed that Krishnan was still a draw. When he came on screen, even the below-30s in the audience clapped, showing that he was still a cult figure forty and more years after his death. One of the major features of Ambikapathi was its poetic and sweetly fascinating dialogues,. Dialogues in Tamil in earlier years had been stilted or too colloquial, relying much on Brahmin slang. Elangovan changed all that. His Tamil added lustre to the film and, for the first time in Tamil Cinema, the dialogues were specially noticed by the common person and the critic. The dialogue-writer assumed importance and Elangovan created waves in Tamil Cinema. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, by now a living legend, began to insist that producers approaching him for a movie should come to him only after engaging Papanasam Sivan and Elangovan and paying their customary advances. During that period, the Bhagavathar - Papanasam Sivan - Elangovan trio was considered just what was needed for box-office success. It all began with Ambikapathi. With the stunning success of Chintamani and Ambikapathi in a single year, movie enthusiasts started regarding Thyagaraja Bhagavathar as a demigod. His subsequent films too began enjoying yearlong runs. Thiruneelakantar (1939), directed by Raja Sandow, was another musical hit of Bhagavathar s. One of its songs Dheena Karunaakarane Nataraajaa... joined the list of great melodies of Tamil Cinema. A tale of a potter-turned-saint, Thiruneelakantar enjoys great popularity to this day. As his films normally enjoyed long runs, Bhagavathar did not believe in doing films in quick succession. He engaged himself in other activities like performing in music concerts, for which there was a great demand. That was why during the decade 1934-44; Bhagavathar appeared in only nine films, all of them classics. Ashok Kumar (1941), directed by Raja Chandrasekhar, was based on a so-called historical story built around Ashoka the Great, his son Gunalan, and the young queen Trishyarakshitai. A tale of a lustful stepmother trying to entice her stepson, it was indeed a rehash of the popular folk myth tale Sarangadhara, which has been filmed in more than one language. A version with Bhagavathar and S.D. Subbulakshmi came out a Naveena Sarangadhara (1936). Why Naveena (means new )? There had been a film called Sarangadhara (1935) in the earlier year and so this was called Naveena! Simple, is it not? In Ashok Kumar, Bhagavathar played Gunalan. A singing actress, T. V. Kumudhini, a newcomer who had made a mark in 1939 with H.M.Reddi s Mathrubhoomi, portrayed his wife. A leading Telugu star and fine actress, Pasupuleti Kannamba, who played the lecherous stepmother also came in for notice for her graceful beauty. Ashok Kumar too was a major success, all its songs becoming hits... ( To be continued) 30 diabetics benefit from yoga workshop In association with South Madras Walkers and Joggers Association, Tamilnadu Physical Education and Sports University (TNPESU) conducted a 6-week yoga workshop for diabetic patients at Dr. Natesan Park (T. Nagar) which concluded on May 25. 30 diabetic patients benefited from the workshop. SADANAND Chief Justice Sathasivam The heir apparent to the Supreme Court Chief Judgeship, Justice P.Sathasivam, will, when he ascends the Supreme throne on July 19, cement the North-South corridor of justice in peninsular India (as not many before him could manage with their respective constituents) into an amalgam which future generations will cite as the acme of spotless justicing. Justice Sathasivam, though he has reached the icy heights in the North, is rooted in the farm lands (for they are his inheritance in Tamilnadu) and, as a commoner, will have two appreciative ears to listen to the woes of the farming community. I, as Government Pleader of the Madras High Court, knew Sathasivam who, as the Special Government Pleader for land acquisition cases, could prepare and argue Writ Appeals in a trice. That is probably the inherent quality that has taken him to where he is now, as his dedication to his mission of doing complete justice to the brief he holds, was appreciated by his client, the government, which bespeaks unsullied honesty. When the Madras Bench had a gaping toothless look, he and some less deserving ministerial cronies became Judges. Soft spoken, extremely respectful to the bar and his colleagues, he is a model to be emulated by the young lawyer with aspirations to enrich the bar and himself which will, in combination, elevate the fora of justice to the highest level expected in a country governed by the rule of law and honesty, which Bharat is. From a pastoral background to the pinnacle in the capital is a justly rewarded honour by the Central Government which requires such redemption in its tempestuous reign of scam-ridden rule which few governments had to face before. Honesty is the best policy says the copy book intelligence for young minds, but forgotten the moment it is written in the book. Sathasivam and I carried it in our mind indelibly and he has risen to the Everestian heights fuelled by the H-rocket. May his tribe increase!
