The Reformation in England (continued) - John Robinson (1576 1625) was the pastor of the Pilgrim Fathers before they left on the Mayflower. He became one of the early leaders of the English Separatists & is regarded (along with Robert Browne) as one of the founders of the Congregational Church. William Brewster (1568 April 1644) was an English official & Mayflower passenger in 1620. He was the only Pilgrim in the Plymouth Colony, who had political & diplomatic experience. Because of his education & status he became the elder & spiritual leader of the new Plymouth Colony. A Caring Church for Thinking People 130 Broad Blvd Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221 330.928.4847 www.pilgrimcf.org, 2017 These three men Smyth, Robinson & Brewster together formed a Separatist Church at Scrooby Manor. When they were discovered, several members were imprisoned, persecuted & forced to flee, ending up in https:// www.biography.com/ people/william-brewster -9225681 Leyden, Holland. In 1620 they decided to make the journey to the New World on board the Mayflower. They formed an Association & Agreement called the Mayflower Pact to establish policy & guidelines for their survival. John Cotton (1585 1652) was a clergyman in England & the American colonies & became a distinguished minister and theologian of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He studied for five years at Trinity College, Cambridge and another nine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. A Puritan, he wanted to do away with the ceremony & vestments associated with the established Anglican Church & preach in a simpler manner. He worked to bring about reform from within the Anglican Church, but eventually the dissention became too much. By 1632, however, the Anglican church had greatly increased its pressure on the non-conforming clergy, & Cotton was forced to go into hiding. The next year, he & his wife boarded a ship for New England. https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/john_cotton_ (minister) 1636 The Massachusetts Bay Colony was concerned about educated leadership in the New World & convinced John Harvard to contribute his library. The Colony financially established Harvard University in Newtowne (Cambridge). Staff Pastor, Rev. Kirk W. Bruce: pilgrimpastor@ameritech.net F.F.
