Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) Notes from the Pastor Bill Donohue: Pennsylvania Grand Jury report on Clergy Sex Abuse Debunked Myth: The report was warranted because of the on-going crisis in the Catholic Church Fact: There is no on-going crisis. It is a total myth. In fact, there is no institution, public or private, that has less of a problem with the sexual abuse of minors than the Catholic Church. The reason is because in the past two years,.005 percent of the Catholic Clergy have had a credible accusation made against them. No one knows the exact figure for other institutions. However, if there were a grand jury investigation of the sexual abuse of minors in the public schools people would get upset. No district attorney or attorney general has the courage to investigate the public schools. For some unknown reason, the Catholic Church has been singled out for this investigation. Myth: The grand jury report was initiated to make the guilty pay. Fact: This is false. This has nothing to do with punishing the guilty. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro admitted on August 14 that Almost every instance of child abuse (the grand jury) found was too old to be prosecuted. He knew this from the beginning. The reason he, and his predecessor, Kathleen Kane (who is now in prison for lying under oath and misusing her Attorney General s Office) wanted to shame the Catholic Church. Kane and Shapiro never sought to shame the imams, ministers or rabbis. They just wanted to shame the priests. At the same time, they never went after psychologists, psychiatrists, camp counselors, coaches, guidance counselors or any other adults who interact with minors. Adapted by CNSNews PLEASE HELP OUR VETERANS Listed below are some of the personal items needed by our veterans at the James A. Haley V.A. Hospital in Tampa. Donations may be made at St. Joan of Arc (back hallway of Church). Some items needed are: disposable razors, shaving cream, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, shampoo, denture cleaner, denture grip, foot powder, new socks, new underwear, playing cards or books. November 11, 2018 Notes from Deacon Fred Silent Saints Among Us Jesus asked his disciples to pay attention to the contributions being made at the temple. Some folks donated quite a bit of money, some not so much. He asked them to observe the poor widow s contribution. As they watched her she probably closed her eyes and hesitated for a moment before she dropped her two last coins in the basket. If Jesus did not point out the widow s contribution, probably no one would have noticed. But Jesus did. She gave all she could. Jesus felt this contribution, not because of the two small coins, but because of the one big prayer that her heart offered with those coins. Hard to say what that prayer was, but one can guess it was an outpouring of dependence on God, an outpouring of gratitude for the blessings God has given her, an outpouring of need to be hugged by God knowing that he would. There are many silent saints among us. They can be found in how they live out a gentle and humble grace. They rarely concern themselves with tomorrow and live for the challenges and graces of the day. They joyfully share what they have with those in need. There was a young man of 10 years who entered an ice cream parlor back in the sixties. He sat down at the table and asked the waitress how much a sundae costs. The waitress replied 50 cents. The young man reached into his pocket and pulled out the change that he had studied it carefully and then asked how much the plain ice cream cup costs. The waitress replied 35 cents. The young man looked at the waitress humbly and asked for the plain ice cream. After he finished the ice cream, the waitress brought the tab and went back to the kitchen. The young man paid the cashier the 35 cents and left. The waitress returned looked at the table and tears began to roll down her cheek as she saw on the table two nickels and five pennies. You see, the young man decided to have the cup of ice cream instead of the sundae so that he would have enough left over for the tip. A compassionate heart and a child-like dependence on God can transform kitchen table charity to kitchen table Gospel. Its a great way to live and a great way to love!

November 11, 2018 T M, S.J (View this bulletin on-line at www.stjoanofarcfl.com) A P, Page 3 J., THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Sunday: Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time; Veterans Day; Remembrance Day (Canada) Monday: St. Josaphat Tuesday:St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Thursday: St. Albert the Great Friday:St. Margaret of Scotland; St. Gertrude Saturday: St. Elizabeth of Hungary TODAY S READINGS First Reading The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ti 1:1-9; Ps 24:1b-4ab, 5-6; Lk 17:1-6 Tuesday: Ti 2:1-8, 11-14; Ps 37:3-4, 18, 23, 27, 29; Lk 17:7-10 Wednesday: Ti 3:1-7; Ps 23:1b-6; Lk 17:11-19 Thursday: Phlm 7-20; Ps 146:7-10; Lk 17:20-25 Friday: 2 Jn 4-9; Ps 119:1-2, 10-11, 17-18; Lk 17:26-37 Saturday: 3 Jn 5-8; Ps 112:1-6; Lk 18:1-8 Sunday: Dn 12:1-3; Ps 16:5, 8-11; Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mk 13:24-32 A GOOD STORY Christianity is the story of beggars who tell other beggars where to find bread. Anonymous TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the Great War ) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or chapel, the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as Saint Martin s Lent or Martinmas, that later developed into the season of Advent. Rev. James Field We welcome newly Baptized Carmine Anthony De Vito into the Holy Roman Catholic Church, baptized on October 6th, 2018!

Stewardship Report for October 14, 2018 will be shared in the next bulletin. Thank you for being responsible Catholics that contribute to our Church and its needs. Altar flowers.. are given in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special day. Each week the Altar Flower Memorial is announced in our Parish Bulletin. To request your flowers, please come to the Parish Office during the week. Donation is $30.
