A Prayer For Lent Lord, Holy Father, show us what kind of man it is who is hanging for our sakes on the cross, whose suffering causes the rocks themselves to crack and crumble with compassion, whose death brings the dead back to life. Let my heart crack and crumble at the sight of him. Let my soul break apart with compassion for his suffering. Let it be shattered with grief at my sins for which he dies. And finally let it be softened with devoted love for him. Page Four February 18, 2018 TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- God's covenant with Noah when he was delivered from the flood (Genesis 9:8-15). Psalm -- Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant (Psalm 25). Second Reading -- The water of the flood prefigured baptism, which saves you now (1 Peter 3:18-22). Gospel -- This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:12-15). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 Tuesday: Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-7, 16-19; Mt 6:7-15 Wednesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19; Lk 11:29-32 Thursday: 1 Pt 5:1-4; Ps 23:1-3a, 4-6; Mt 16:13-19 Friday: Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-8; Mt 5:20-26 Saturday: Dt 26:16-19; Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 Sunday: Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18; Ps 116:10, 15-19; Rom 8:31b-34; Mk 9:2-10 First Sunday of Lent Clear Conscience Usually, the first reading has something in common with the gospel. Today's however, has more in common with the second reading from St. Peter. They both talk about Noah and the ark, where the few good people were saved by going through the water. Peter compares that to the waters of Baptism, in which we are saved by God. He also has an interesting image of Jesus "preaching to the spirits in prison." It refers to the fallen angels whose disobedience lead the rest of the population to turn away from God. Just as God washed away the evil of the world in the waters of the flood, so the waters of Baptism made us into a new people who have clear consciences, both because God has forgiven our sins and because we promise to follow only Him. That leads to the Gospel, where Jesus is tempted by Satan. But unlike the people of Noah's time, Jesus does not fall to the temptations. Instead, he comes out of the desert, proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is near. He tells us to repent and believe in the good news. That means we have a choice to make: Do we accept this kingdom and repent, or do we ignore our baptism and do what we want? We may say that we are willing to repent, but do we do anything about it? Do we still have a clear conscience when we think of how much time we spend getting to know Jesus? Ever pray or read the bible outside of church? Do we spend near as much on the poor, as we do for movies, hobbies, video games, or drinks? Do we ever tell anyone about the kingdom and what Jesus has done for us? Next time you see a rainbow, think about the covenant that God made with Noah. Just as God's promises get better and better till the coming of Jesus, we are challenged to be more and more like Him. Are you satisfied with just a promise that God won't destroy us all in a flood? Or are you ready to live the New Covenant that Jesus promises to those who will follow him? February 18, 2018 Page Five Lent 2018 Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer is making our selves consciously aware of God s presence in and around us. It is listening attentively to God. God created us for Godself, so we thirst for God. God created us out of love, so God thirsts for us. The point where our thirst for God meets God s thirst for us is the point of salvation. Fasting makes us hungry. As we fast during lent, our hunger directs our attention to our longing for God. Hence fasting during Lent does not have to be only about food. We are also called to fast from habits, practices, and things that distract us from our relationship with God and others. Fasting is only one side of the coin. The other side of the same coin is almsgiving. The scripture praises almsgiving. In the Book of Tobit, we hear Tobit advise his son Tobiah, Do not turn your face away from any of the poor, and God s face will not be turned away from you. Son, Tobit advises his son, do not hesitate to give alms, you will be storing up goodly treasure for yourself against the day of adversity (Tb. 4:7-9). Almsgiving expiates sins. When King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream about the pending destruction of his kingdom, he summoned for Daniel asking him to give interpretation to his dream. Daniel told him that through his dream the Lord wanted to show the king his imminent punishment. Daniel advised king Nebuchadnezzar to atone for his sins by good deeds and kindness to the poor (Dn. 4:24). In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells us that almsgiving is a means to everlasting life (Mt. 25:31-46). Lent calls us to fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Fasting helps us to thirst for God who first thirsts for each of us. Prayer helps us to listen to God. Almsgiving expiates our sins and helps us to store up goodly treasure against the day of adversity. Blessings, Fr. Ignatius
