The life of the liturgy does not come from what dawns upon the minds of individuals and planning groups. On the contrary, it is God s descent upon our world, the source of real liberation. The Transfiguration prepared the disciples for His and their suffering, as it does for us today. o Verse and he was transfigured before them Matthew 17:2 Intro o Collect O God, who has commanded us to listen to your beloved Son, Be pleased, we pray, to nourish us inwardly by your word, That, with spiritual sight made pure, we may rejoice to behold your glory. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. (Roman Missal) o How s that working out for you? Last week we were challenged to cast aside the lies of the tempter, trust our loving Father, abandon to obedience, and give him our doubts. (Phew!) o Jesus in Scripture o All About Lent, by Jimmy Akin at EWTN (http://www.ewtn.com/library/answers/lent.htm) Genesis 12:1-4A 2:39 o With the appearance of Abram (later to be renamed Abraham), the story of Genesis takes on a completely new form. From the viewpoint of salvation history a new period begins, marked by a divine intervention destined to reshape history s course. An obscure Semite is called by God, and, through his response in faith, there begins the unfolding of God s plan which will reach its climax in the events of the Exodus and Mount Sinai. The mounting aversion to God that characterized the first eleven 2

chapters now gives way to a conversation with God. Today, we hear the call of Abram. (Hahn, A_L_2) o The LORD said to Abram: Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father s house to a land that I will show you. 3:52 Scripture and the history of the Church are filled with moments when the Father asks one of His children to go forth from everything known. What might be one area where God is asking you to go forth, to leave comfort and assurance behind, and to trust Him? o I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great 5:20 CCC 762 The remote preparation for this gathering together of the People of God begins when he calls Abraham and promises that he will become the father of a great people. 157 Its immediate preparation begins with Israel's election as the People of God. By this election, Israel is to be the sign of the future gathering of all nations. 158 But the prophets accuse Israel of breaking the covenant and behaving like a prostitute. They announce a new and eternal covenant. Christ instituted this New Covenant. 159 (157 Cf. Gen 12:2; 15:5-6. 158 Cf. Ex 19:5-6; Deut 7:6; Isa 2:2-5; Mic 4:1-4. 159 LG 9; cf. Hos 1; Isa 1:2-4; Jer 2; 31:31-34; Isa 55:3.) CCC 706 Against all human hope, God promises descendants to Abraham, as the fruit of faith and of the power of the Holy Spirit. 68 In Abraham's progeny all the nations of the earth will be blessed. This progeny will be Christ himself, 69 in whom the outpouring of the Holy Spirit will gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 70 God commits himself by his own solemn oath to giving his beloved Son and the promised Holy Spirit... [who is] the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it. 71 (68 Cf. Gen 18:1-15; Lk 1:26-38. 54-55; Jn 1:12-13; Rom 4:16-21. 69 Cf. Gen 12:3; Gal 3:16. 70 Cf. Jn 11:52. 71 Eph 1:13-14; cf. Gen 22:17 19; Lk 1:73; Jn 3:16; Rom 8:32; Gal 3:14.) o so that you will be a blessing. 8:22 CCC 59 In order to gather together scattered humanity God calls Abram from his country, his kindred and his father's house, 16 and makes him Abraham, that is, the father of a multitude of nations. In you all the nations of the earth shall be blessed. 17 (16 Gen 12:1. 17 Gen 17:5; 12:3 (LXX); cf. Gal 3:8.) CCC 1669 Sacramentals derive from the baptismal priesthood: every baptized person is called to be a blessing, and to bless. 174 (174 Cf. Gen 12:2; Lk 6:28; Rom 12:14; 1 Pet 3:9.) o All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you. 9:56 CCC 2676 Mary is blessed among women because she believed in the fulfillment of the Lord's word. Abraham, because of his faith, 3

became a blessing for all the nations of the earth. 35 Mary, because of her faith, became the mother of believers, through whom all nations of the earth receive him who is God's own blessing: Jesus, the fruit of thy womb. (35 Cf. Gen 12:3.) o Abram went as the LORD directed him. 11:30 CCC 145 The Letter to the Hebrews, in its great eulogy of the faith of Israel's ancestors, lays special emphasis on Abraham's faith: By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go. 4 By faith, he lived as a stranger and pilgrim in the promised land. 5 By faith, Sarah was given to conceive the son of the promise. And by faith Abraham offered his only son in sacrifice. 6 (4 Heb 11:8; cf. Gen 12:1-4. 5 Cf. Gen 23:4. 6 Cf. Heb 11:17.) CCC 2570 When God calls him, Abraham goes forth as the Lord had told him ; 8 Abraham's heart is entirely submissive to the Word and so he obeys. Such attentiveness of the heart, whose decisions are made according to God's will, is essential to prayer, while the words used count only in relation to it. Abraham's prayer is expressed first by deeds: a man of silence, he constructs an altar to the Lord at each stage of his journey. Only later does Abraham's first prayer in words appear: a veiled complaint reminding God of his promises which seem unfulfilled. 9 Thus one aspect of the drama of prayer appears from the beginning: the test of faith in the fidelity of God. (8 Gen 12:4. 9 Cf. Gen 15:2 f.) II Timothy 1:8B-10 15:19 o Last letter before martyrdom o Beloved: Bear your share of hardship for the gospel 15:42 CCC 2471 The Christian is not to be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord. 267 In situations that require witness to the faith, the Christian must profess it without equivocation, after the example of St. Paul before his judges. We must keep a clear conscience toward God and toward men. 268 (267 2 Tim 1:8. 268 Acts 24:16.) CCC 2506 Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith. o with the strength that comes from God. 18:17 CCC 1963 According to Christian tradition, the Law is holy, spiritual, and good, 14 yet still imperfect. Like a tutor 15 it shows what must be done, but does not of itself give the strength, the grace of the Spirit, to fulfill it (14 Cf. Rom 7:12,14,16. 15 Cf. Gal 3:24.) CCC 2848 Lead us not into temptation implies a decision of the heart: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.... No one can serve two masters. 156 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 157 In this assent to the Holy Spirit the Father gives us strength. (156 Mt 6:21, 24. 157 Gal 5:25.) We re all 2-year-old slam-dunkers! 4

Do you take time to realize and specifically acknowledge, the fact that your strength comes from God, not your own efforts? o He saved us and called us to a holy life 22:56 Remember, at the root of it, holy means set apart. o not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus 23:58 the grace we receive is entirely free and unmerited by our efforts (Rom 6:23; Tit 3:5). (Ignatius, 397) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:23) But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. (Tit 3:4-7) o our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 25:40 CCC 1021 Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace manifested in Christ. 592 (592 Cf. 2 Tim 1:9-10.) Matthew 17:1-9 26:26 o CCC 554 From the day Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Master began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things... and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 290 Peter scorns this prediction, nor do the others understand it any better than he. 291 In this context the mysterious episode of Jesus' Transfiguration takes place (290 Mt 16:21. 291 Cf. Mt 16:22-23; Mt 17:23; Lk 9:45.) o CCC 444 The Gospels report that at two solemn moments, the Baptism and the Transfiguration of Christ, the voice of the Father designates Jesus his beloved Son. 53 (53 Cf. Mt 3:17; cf. 17:5.) o The OT background for this event is God s self-revelation to Moses on Mt. Sinai. (1) Both take place on the seventh day (2) both occur on a mountain (3) both Jesus and Moses take three companions with them (4) the faces of both Jesus and Moses shine with God s glory (5) both involve the glory-cloud of God s Presence (6) and both events involve God speaking through a heavenly voice (Ignatius, 37) 5

o Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 29:27 strengthens three early Church leaders after Jesus first Passion prediction (16:21). o And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. 30:54 CCC 568 Christ's Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles' faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent on to the high mountain prepares for the ascent to Calvary. o Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. 31:41 CCC 2583 only on the mountain of the Transfiguration will Moses and Elijah behold the unveiled face of him whom they sought; the light of the knowledge of the glory of God [shines] in the face of Christ, crucified and risen. 35 (35 2 Cor 4:6; cf. Lk 9:30-35.) He is the One whom we ve sought, as well! o Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 33:50 Feast of Booths from Leviticus 23. o a voice that said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. 34:47 Name the other event at which God spoke these words. o Rise, and do not be afraid. 35:12 Remember: this is the command most often given in Scripture! o As they were coming down from the mountain 35:45 In this life, we always come down from the mountain, but that s a good thing! o Jesus charged them, Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. 37:12 A clear reminder to them that He was, indeed, going to suffer and die. So what? 38:09 o CCC 556 the Transfiguration is the sacrament of the second regeneration : our own Resurrection. 300 From now on we share in the Lord's Resurrection through the Spirit who acts in the sacraments of the Body of Christ. The Transfiguration gives us a foretaste of Christ's glorious coming, when he will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body. 301 But it also recalls that it is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God : 302 Peter did not yet understand this when he wanted to remain with Christ on the mountain. It has been reserved for you, Peter, but for after death. For now, Jesus says: Go down to toil on earth, to serve on earth, to be scorned and crucified on earth. Life goes down to be killed; Bread goes down to suffer hunger; the Way goes down to be exhausted on his journey; the Spring goes down to suffer thirst; and 6

you refuse to suffer? 303 (300 St. Thomas Aquinas, STh III, 45, 4, ad 2. 301 Phil 3:21. 302 Acts 14:22. 303 St. Augustine, Sermo 78, 6: PL 38, 492-493; cf. Lk 9:33.) o Knowing that our Father is always calling us to go forth from what we know into the depths of His presence and guidance, and knowing that our strength lies in Him alone anyway, let us follow Him down from the mountain into the valleys of intimacy and sacrifice, for His glory. o Prayer [This prayer is designed to be said within the family before a Crucifix during the second week of Lent.] Mother or a child: From the words of St. Paul [Hebrews 12:14]. Dearly beloved, let us, having such a cloud of witnesses over us, put away every encumbrance and sin entangling us, and run with patience to the fight set before us; looking towards the author and finisher of faith, Jesus, who for the joy set before him, endured a cross, despising shame, and sit at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him... that you may not grow weary and lose heart. For you have not yet resisted unto blood in the struggle with sin. Father: We ought to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ Family: in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection. Father: Let us pray. Grant us, O God, that through the spiritual renewal of Lent, we may grow in our understanding of the mystery of Christ. This we ask of you through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Family: Amen. Favor this dwelling, Lord, with your presence. Far from it repulse all the wiles of Satan. Your holy angels, let them live here, to keep us in peace. And may your blessing remain always upon us. This we ask of you through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Father: Let us bless the Lord. 7

Family: Thanks be to God. Father: May the almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless and keep us. Family: Amen. (Catholic.org, Prayer for the Second Week of Lent ) Genesis 12:1-4A The LORD said to Abram: Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father s house to a land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you. Abram went as the LORD directed him. II Timothy 1:8B-10 Beloved: Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Matthew 17:1-9 Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. 8

When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Rise, and do not be afraid. And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. 1.
