BETHANY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, ELCA You have a place here! Joyfully we profess our faith through God s unconditional love. Here and now God dwells in all of our lives, bears our sins on the cross, and forgives us all. TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE 25th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 8:30 am on Sunday, November 18, 2018 Holy Communion Worship Sarah Sleeter, presiding November begins with All Saints Day and ends in or near Advent, when we anticipate Christ s coming again. So the readings today tell of the final resurrection and the end time. In the turmoil of hope, fear, and disbelief that these predictions provoke in us, Hebrews sounds a note of confident trust. Christ makes a way for us where there is no way, and we walk it confidently, our hearts and bodies washed in baptismal water, trusting the one who has promised. The more we see the last day approaching, the more important it is to meet together to provoke one another to love. ALL ARE WELCOME The family of Bethany hopes that your worship experience is spiritually fulfilling and your day begins with our Lord s gifts of peace and joy. If you are visiting today, you are invited to the Communion Table. As Christians of the Reformation tradition, we believe that the Sacrament of the Altar is the Real Presence of Christ s body and blood, instituted by Christ Himself as a sign of unity. All baptized and confessing believers are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion by intinction the dipping of the wafer into the wine when the chalice is offered. Gluten-free wafers and grape juice are available. The assembly is to line up down center aisle and return to seats by side aisles.

2 ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR THE SEASON OF PENTECOST Minister/Leaders speak regular print Congregation speaks bold print Arrow directives indicate the following: stand if able be seated THE GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God Prelude Reflections for Meditation Welcome and Greeting Prayers and Praises Invocation We gather together in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Hymn of Gathering How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds vs 1, 2 & 3 (page 15) Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who calls us into an everlasting hope, who guides us to springs of the water of life, who enlightens us with the spirit of wisdom. Amen. One with the communion of saints in all times and places, let us confess our sin against God and one another. (Silence is kept for reflection) O God, our merciful redeemer, we confess the ways we live only for ourselves. We fail to see you in our neighbor s face. We turn our ears from voices that cry out.

3 We pass by the hungry and the oppressed. In your great mercy, forgive our sin and strengthen us for service to all in need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake, God forgives you all your sin. Blessed are you! Rejoice and be glad, beloved people of God. Amen. Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Kyrie

4 Hymn of Praise Prayer of the Day Almighty God, your sovereign purpose brings salvation to birth. Give us faith to be steadfast amid the tumults of this world, trusting that your kingdom comes and your will is done through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

5 THE WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song God s Word from the Scriptures (NRSV) A reading from Daniel, Chapter 12, verses 1-3 At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. God s Word from the Psalms (NRSV) Let us read responsively Psalm 16 Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you. As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble, in whom is all my delight. Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names upon my lips. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; I have a goodly heritage. I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure. For you do not give me up to Sheol, or let your faithful one see the Pit. You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

6 God s Word from the Scriptures (NRSV) A reading from Hebrews, Chapter 10, verses 11-25 And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds, he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Children s Message

Gospel Acclamation 7 God s Word from the Gospel (NRSV) The Holy Gospel according to Mark, Chapter 13, verses 1-8 Glory to you, O Lord. As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

8 Sermon God s Word Applied to Life Hymn of the Day Lord Speak to Us, that We May Speak (page 16) (Please stand for the last verse) The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession With the people of God gathered here and throughout the world, we offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all people in need. (A brief silence) Gracious God, you made the church through the working of the Holy Spirit, and you provide the assurance of faith through your Son. Guide us in our proclamation of the gospel. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You created all things and said your creation was good. Protect land and water from harm, cause all living things to thrive, and raise up stewards for the well-being of creation. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. You desire peace for the whole world. Provide refuge for those in harm s way, bring an end to war, and instill in political leaders the love for all that comes from you. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. You reveal your compassion through caregivers, advocates, and medical professionals. Heal the sick, deliver the suffering, bind up the brokenhearted, provide shelter for the homeless and food for the hungry. We pray especially for Kim Davis, Orice Walters, Tom & Dorothy Temple, Sarah Underhill, Kristin Underhill, Mike, Theresa, Erick Schultz, Tony Solda, Ron Arnold, Terry, Kierstin, Jen, Rosie Buteyn, Arlene Coulter, Debi Phelps, Dan Gyselinck, Paula Conery, Ryan Dedo, Blake Sternhagen, Jean Guldswog, Rodney Walter, Paula Reynolds, Danielle Kitz, Sandy Verbos, family of Shirley Stachowicz (Larry Raiche s sister) those who have received prayer shawls and are in need of comfort, those who have requested special prayers through our website, and others that we now name silently or aloud. (brief silence) In every situation help them to know you are with them always, let us pray. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 9

10 You bless us in our coming and our going, in our waking and our sleeping, and in our daily work. Make our love and good deeds a reflection of the freedom you give us in Christ Jesus. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We offer our own prayers to You, either silently or aloud. (other intercessions may be offered) You grant us everlasting life. Through the witness of your saints who now rest in the Lord, inspire us in our lives of faithful service. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Hear our prayers, spoken and silent, that we commend to you this day, trusting in your abundant mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Sharing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Greet those seated near you with love and the sign of Christ s peace. THE MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ Offering and Presentation of the Gifts September-December Mission ~ Good Samaritan Fund Special envelopes available (make checks to Bethany Lutheran Church) Offertory Prayer Creator God, you made everything, and you provide for every need. The bread we break and the wine we pour come from you. As we eat and drink with thanksgiving, fill us with your love; let that love flow through us to others; and join us to the saints before us in a holy and boundless communion; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

11 The Great Thanksgiving and Words of Institution The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of ev ry nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

12 Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Invitation To Communion Hunger no more. Thirst no more. Come to the banquet of life. Distribution of Communion and Canticle (Sung to the melody of O God Our Help in Ages Past )

Post Communion Blessing The body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in His grace until He comes again. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 13 Post Communion Prayer Sovereign God, in this meal you give us a foretaste of the great feast to come. Keep us faithful to you, that we, with all your saints, may at length celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world Hymn of Sending Lead On, O King Eternal! (page 17) Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Announcements Anyone is welcome to announce any upcoming events or share thoughts of interest Dismissal Led on by the saints before us, go in peace to serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia.
