Thinking About Discipleship

Introduction 1. Come and Learn: Matthew 11:28-30 2. Go and Teach: Matthew 28:19-20 Come and Learn Go and Teach 3. One scripture is an invitation and the other is a commission. A. We can't go and teach if we have not come and learned. Come and Learn 1) Attending services will help us learn, gain knowledge, and understand its application. 2) However, study at home is where we learn the most. 1. What do we learn when we come? We learn of Christ's universal and impartial interest in us. A. His invitation is to all (The Jew and Greek). B. Many common people during Christ's walk on earth heard Him (Mark 12:37). C. Sinners, beggars, outcasts, publicans - all found a friend in Jesus. 1) One of these was a man by the name of Zacchaeus Luke 19:2-10 Come and Learn Go and Teach 1

D. Jesus did not neglect the wealthy either. They all had opportunity to come learn of Him Matthew 19:16-22 2. We learn the Universal need of all mankind. A. All need to realize that they have sinned (1 John 1:8-10). Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned-- Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 3. We learn about His love and sacrifice to meet our need. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. A. By the example in His life. Philippians 2:5-8 Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. B. Through His death. Luke 22:42 saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done." 1) The purpose of Christ's life was summed up in Luke 19:10 Come and Learn Go and Teach 2

4. We learn that He is the only answer to our need. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 5. We learn the value of a soul. Matthew 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? A. Let this, with our love of God, be our motivation. We need to learn to give of ourselves - Don't be selfish. 6. We learn from Jesus how to reach those who are lost. Matthew 4:18-19 A. It takes sacrifice, training, study, prayer, time, and effort to be a disciple and learner of Jesus! B. They left their nets and followed. We must be willing to leave all and follow, and we can with this mind set: Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. When we learn of Christ and hold Him dear to our hearts then we can, and will want to teach others. Our motivation to live for Him and to tell others about Him will happen when we truly understand His great love and sacrifice that He offered for us on the cross! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR HANDS? Come and Learn Go and Teach 3

Go and Teach 1. If we have taken the time to learn, then we will want to go and teach others about the Savior. A. To be a Christian is to be a missionary. Acts 4:20.we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." Acts 8:4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. 1 Corinthians 9:16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 2. He gave His disciples at least three distinct commands. A. Lift up your eyes and look (recognize). John 4:35 1) We need to lift up our eyes and look - learn to recognize those that are without Christ and who need Him. There are masses of people that are lost. B. Pray. Matthew 9:37-38 1) We should pray for laborers. This is an unfinished prayer we cannot ever have enough laborers! 2) Pray for God to lead others to us and for us to be led to them. ( Lead me to some soul today. ) Seize the opportunity to talk to others! Come and Learn Go and Teach 4

C. Go. Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 1) We must go. It is our individual duty. Our own world may be across the street or at the local store - but we must try. 2) To GO is to put the action into our belief. 3. There is an urgency about going. A. Time is precious. When the harvest is ready, which it now is then time is of the essence! 4. Realizing the great need, how can Christians who say they love Christ be so indifferent? Come and Learn Go and Teach 5

Conclusion 1. To Come and Learn and to Go and Teach is a continual process. A. If you have not obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ then come and learn of Him. B. Come and Learn and then Go and Teach so that you can find eternal rest. 2. Let us not shirk our responsibility of "seeking the lost". Come and Learn Go and Teach 6
