Worship Leaders: Solemn Service of Institution of Lord s Supper Maundy Thursday (from Latin, mandatum, meaning commandment as found in John 13:34) serves with Good Friday and Easter Sunday as one continuous service commemorating passion and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As service is continuous, re is no benediction pronounced until Easter. At communion, you will be invited to come to Communion Table and partake of bread and cup according to an ancient practice known as intinction, whereby bread is taken, dipped into cup and n eaten toger in remembrance of Christ. Clergy stoles signify servant towel worn by Christ as he washed feet of his disciples at Last Supper. Red reminds us of blood of Christ shed for our sin. As High Priestly Prayer of Jesus Christ is read from Please refrain from speaking upon entering sanctuary. Hymns will not be announced. A nursery is available to on first floor of Two Park Street for children four years of age and under. ASL translation will be provided at front left side of sanctuary, and gluten-free Communion wafers may be received in front center of sanctuary. Music: * Congregation standing M a u n d y T h u r s d a y John 17, church will be stripped to signify Christ s moving from Passover meal toward Calvary where He became final and complete Lamb of God who took away sins of world. The crown of thorns recalls Christ s trial and crucifixion. The bare church is designed to remind us of grave into which Christ descended on Good Friday. Most portions of this service are adapted from John Calvin s 1542 Geneva Order of Worship for Holy Communion. John Calvin (1509 1564) was a French ologian, church reformer and pastor, whom Protestant churches in Reformed tradition (such as Park Street Church) regard as a major formulator of ir beliefs. Or portions of this service are derived from Reformed practices over centuries. Scripture will be read from New International Version. This idea is distilled at cross itself, where greatest evil Evil could muster achieved greatest good that will ever be. * Silent Procession
* The New Commandment John 13:31 35 * Psalm 116:1 9 Leader: I love Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. People: Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. Leader: The cords of death entangled me, anguish of grave came upon me; I was overcome with trouble and sorrow. People: Then I called on name of Lord: O Lord, save me! Leader: The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. People: The Lord protects simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me. Leader: Be at rest once more, O my soul, for Lord has been good to you. People: For you, O Lord, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before Lord in land of living. * The Ten Commandments Exodus 20:1 17 Confession of Sin Silently and n in unison (kneeling or sitting): Lord God, eternal and almighty Far: We acknowledge before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners, conceived and born in guilt and in corruption, prone to do evil, unable of our own power to do good. Because of our sin, we endlessly violate your holy commandments. But, O Lord, with heartfelt sorrow we repent and turn away from all our offenses. We condemn ourselves and our evil ways, with true sorrow asking that your grace will relieve our distress. Have compassion on us, most gracious God, Far of mercies, for sake of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. And in removing our guilt, also grant us daily increase of grace of your Holy Spirit, and produce in us fruits of holiness and of righteousness pleasing in your sight: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Assurance of Pardon The Peace is omitted, remembering that Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. * Hymn No 248 Ah, Holy Jesus Herzliebster Jesu Prayers of People (kneeling or sitting) Old Testament Reading Exodus 12:1 4; 11 14 Psalm 116:10 17 How shall I repay Lord for all good things he has done for me? I will lift up cup of salvation and call upon name of Lord. I will fulfill my vows to Lord in presence of all his people. Precious in sight of Lord is death of his servants. O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant and child of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds. I will offer you sacrifice of thanksgiving and call upon Name of Lord. Glory to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Spirit, as it was in beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Epistle Reading 1 Corinthians 11:23 26 Anm Verily, Verily Verily, verily I say unto you, except ye eat flesh of Son of Man and drink his blood, ye have not life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood dwelleth in me, and I in him. It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O Lord, our God, creator and ruler of universe. You bring forth bread from earth, and create fruit of vine. You made us in your image, and freed us from bonds of slavery. You claimed us as your people, and made covenant to be our God. You fed us manna in wilderness, and brought us to a land flowing with milk and honey. When we forgot you, and our faith was weak, you spoke through prophets, calling us to turn again to your ways. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with celestial choirs and with all faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to glory of your name: Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow r and might, Ho-ly, ho-ly, * Prayer of Thanksgiving & The Lord s Prayer (as below) Our Far who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name.
