31st Sunday In Ordinary Time November 5, 2017 FROM THE DESK OF FR. FALLON Happy Weekend, Everyone! Say it with me now: phylacteries! What's a phylactery? It's a small leather box containing bits of Scripture, traditionally worn by Jewish men during morning prayers. One is worn on the left arm, another on the forehead. Yes, I did a Google search. I mean, I knew it but wanted to double-check. Sheesh. What does a phylactery have to do with us? Everything! It was supposed to be worn to help people remember to keep the law, but the scribes and Pharisees have been doing the opposite. They've become self-righteous, and sometimes we can become that way, too. Jesus will seem pretty salty these next couple of weeks, and that's by design as we near the end of the Liturgical Year. As November progresses, Jesus points out these areas in life where we're still not united to Him. And He's not doing so to be mean, but to help us, to keep us from widening our phylacteries, or thinking of ourselves as self-sufficient. He wants us to be united to Him, to depend on Him for everything. Something for us to reflect on this week. ***Mark your calendars! St. Elizabeth of Hungary Feast Day celebration is November 19! Parish Potluck at 5pm!****
