Faith 150 Build 140 Pinery Trail, Scarborough Sept 13, Oct 24, and Oct 25, 2017 Building in Brampton, Caledon, Toronto & York Region
What is Faith 150 Build? The Faith 150 Build is a GTA-based initiative and a partnership between Habitat for Humanity GTA and Faith in Canada 150. Occurring against the backdrop of Canada s 150th birthday and at a time when we are witnessing evidence of increasing divisions in the world, the Faith 150 Build provides a powerful opportunity for faith leaders and members of faith communities to demonstrate interfaith collaboration and solidarity around the shared human right of a safe, decent place to live. Faith 150 Build 140 Pinery Trail, Scarborough Faith Leaders Build Sept 13, 8:00am - 4:00pm Faith Community Build Oct 24 & 25, 8:00am - 4:00pm Taking place in Scarborough at 140 Pinery Trail (just north of Neilson & 401), this stacked back-to-back townhouse project will become home to 50 working, low-income families partnering with Habitat GTA to become homeowners. The Faith 150 Build will be working on 30 of the 50 units that will be ready for families to move in by the end of 2018. Our goal of $100,000 will cover all the bricks for 15 homes on Pinery Trail.
Why a Faith 150 Build? To demonstrate unique Canadian relationships between faith communities contributes to building new relationships expressing the power of faith. Tangible, visible expression of people of faith working together to build safe, decent homes for members of our community creates powerful symbolism around interfaith collaboration. Physical act of coming together to hammer nails, hang drywall, and raise walls provides a unique venue to build new friendships and networks that can t be replicated in more traditional formats like meetings, dinners, and forums. Demonstrating Interfaith Collaboration to the Broader Public Demonstrate faith communities engaging in constructive dialogue and building stronger communities together. A visual affirmation of the faith and ethno-cultural diversity of our country during our Canada 150 celebration year. Demonstrate that faith communities care about the common good and affirm the reality that we are all humans with basic needs like shelter. Networking and Building New Interfaith Friendships Provides a non-traditional way to bring faith leaders and faith communities together, enabling us to engage in different ways and build relationships for future collaborations. A unique opportunity for faith communities to accomplish something tangible, meaningful, and lasting as we work together to raise walls and build homes. A common faith group activity that can engage a broad age spectrum from youth through to older adults. The Building Part Each build day will run from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All safety equipment (steel-toed boots, hardhats, safety googles, gloves, etc.) and tools will be provided by Habitat GTA. Participants will work together in groups of 6 to 10 under the supervision of a skilled Volunteer Crew Leader. No previous experience is necessary! There are also volunteer opportunities to assist in event coordination, lunches, etc. for individuals who may want to be part of the event but not directly involved in building. The Faith and Networking Part Each day will begin with formal remarks. Each day will be structured to foster relationships between faith communities. Faith and cultural requirements relating to food, religious traditions and attire will be accommodated. Meet the Mouldey Family Michelle Mouldey is a single mother trying to take care of her two sons and daughter. The building where they live is so unsafe that she is afraid to let the boys play outside. Just a few years ago, there was a shooting near their apartment building. The boys have big dreams and talk about becoming police officers and lawyers when they grow-up so they can help other people who live in fear of crime. For her part, Michelle dreams of a home in a community where she and her children can go on bike rides together, have friends and family over to visit, and live securely, free from fear. Their move into a new home at 140 Pinery Trail will provide her family with a safe place to live.
