Lesson 1 What are Missions? Missions are the good things we do for other people to show God's love and build God's Kingdom. Missions can be all the way around the world and even as close as helping our neighbors. Jesus tells us that missions are important for helping others and introducing others to Him. It is Christians who must tell others about Jesus. The Bible says in Matthew 28:19-20: Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

This Bible passage is telling us that Jesus wants everyone in the world to know Him. That is what it means by "make disciples of all nations" -- the whole world. Churches help people around the world by sending missionaries. Missionaries are the people who help others and tell them about Jesus. There are missionaries in every country around the world. Greenland North America Europe Africa m i s s i o n s

The word missions make a lot of people think of village tribes in Africa, cardboard houses in Haiti and other poor countries. Everyone needs an opportunity to hear about Jesus. That is why missionaries are willing to go. Missions are also important for our neighbors. There are plenty of people right here in the United States that need help and need to hear about Jesus' love. Draw stick people by the houses.

Lesson How do Missionaries Help Others? Learnin a NeĿ Lan ua e Imagine going to a strange place where people are speaking with a language you don't understand. Do you think it would be hard to communicate with these people? Missionaries need to learn the language of the place they will be to talk with people. Some missionaries go away for a long time. The whole family goes. Other missionaries will only stay for a short time. This is usually when immediate help is needed for something specific. Learn "Hello" in these languages: Mexican - Hola (the h is silent; pronounced o-la) Italian - Ciao (pronounced chow) German - Hallo (pronounced hail-o) Mexican Italian German

Meetin Physical Needs There are two main things that missions get done. The first is meeting the physical needs of people who need help. Jesus knows that many people in the world are poor or sick. A lot of these people are kids your age. They have no way to get food for their families. There are no doctors to help make them feel better. Missionaries will bring medicine, food, clothes, and other things needed to make living easier. Other people around the world may lose their homes due to bad weather that causes a disaster, such as hurricanes, tornados, and tsunamis. Missionaries will help build houses and other shelters. Even very hot weather can cause a drought, which means there is not enough water for food to grow. In this case people need food. When a drought ends, it is possible for food to grow again in some places. There are lots of reasons why missions are important for meeting the physical needs of people everywhere. It is sad that people around the world are hurt, hungry, and scared. Isn't it nice to know that Jesus sends missionaries to help? Missionaries are very special people.

Let's Make a Grocery Shoppin List You are going on a missions trip to China. One of the ways you will help is to bring healthy food to Li Jing and her family. Make a list of the foods you will bring! Use the first letter on each line to match to a food in the Word List. These are healthy foods that someone in China would like to eat. B N P R S T Word List Noodles Rice Spinach Pork Bamboo Tofu

Build Paper Houses! Families all over the world lose their homes because of a weather conditions. Missionaries help rebuild houses. Houses all over the world are different. Much of this is because of the materials available to build a house. Let's build 3 paper houses that you can decorate any way you like! Adult help needed! You will need cardboard tubes and glue dots for this project! Print a house template on plain copy paper and cut out. (Cardstock will not work very well for this project.) Let your child color the house using his or her imagination. Wrap the house around a cardboard tube and adhere with glue dots. An adult can now cut out the door on 3 sides, so the door will open and shut. Repeat instructions for the other 2 house templates.

Meetin Spiritual Needs The second half of missions is meeting people's need to know Jesus. This is very important because God wants everyone to know His son, so everyone can be in heaven one day. God created every single person in this world. We are all God's children. This makes everyone a part of God's family. Missionaries know that in order to tell others about Jesus it helps to meet their physical needs first. Think of it like this: Jamal and his family had been going through a terrible drought. All of their crops died and they were running out of food to eat. Missionaries come to help Jamal and his family. They start telling the family about Jesus. The missionaries tell the family that Jesus cares about their needs and will give them eternal life with God. This is important information, but does it help with the hunger that this family is feeling right now? Now think about this: The missionaries give Jamal and his family big boxes of food and drinks. They all sit down and enjoy a meal together. The

missionaries help Jamal's mom put food in the kitchen pantry. Now that the family is feeling cheerful, the missionaries sit down with the them and tell them that they were able to help with food because of Jesus' love. It makes more sense to tell people about Jesus after their physical needs are met. This is the time people will be ready to hear about Jesus and the Good News he brings! Other Ways Missionaries Meet Spiritual Needs Missionaries build and start new churches in places all over the world. They also bring Bibles written in the language that people understand. Take a look at Bible Gateway to see what the Bible looks like in different languages! Click here. There are some times when people don't have physical needs to be met. They are perfectly happy and healthy. But they just havent heard about Jesus. Missionaries who live on the mission field for a long time or for always are usually there spreading the Good News about Jesus to the local people who live there. For instance:

Ahmad and his family have a nice house in Turkey. They have lots of friends, too! They don't know about Jesus. Missionaries have come to start a church in Turkey. They go to neighborhoods to let the families know about the new church and invite them to come to a service. Ahmad and his family decide to check it out because they are curious who Jesus is! They end up inviting the missionaries to dinner and they talk more about Jesus and how much He loves and cares for them. Decorate the Church!

Let's Make a Turkish Treat Turkish Halva - A Popular Dessert in Turkey Ingredients: 1/2 c. unsalted butter 2 c. all-purpose flour 3 c. granulated sugar 1/2 c. water 1/4 c. chopped walnuts Instructions: 1. Melt the butter in saucepan over medium heat. 2. Stir in the flour and cook until it toasts to a light brown. 3 Add the granulated sugar and mixture quickly. Don't let the flour get crumbly. 4. Stir in the water and let it come to a boil. 5. Fold in walnuts. 6. Spread mixture on a cookie sheet with a rubber spatula and let cool.

Lesson How a Church Helps Missionaries Missions are very important because God loves all his children. Anyone can become a missionary. The only thing required is to love Jesus and have a strong desire to help people. You don't have to go out on mission trips, but you can help the missionaries in your church. The church raises money from church members. That money then goes to buy mission supplies such as: - Medicine - Toiletries - Food - School supplies - Building materials - Other things that missionaries take on mission trips Other Ŀays churches help missionaries is: - praying. God hears every prayer. - sending them gifts. - communicating so they know you are thinking about them.

Let's Make Cards or Missionaries Print out these cards and color them. Get addresses of missionaries in your church from your church office. -----------------------------------------------------------

Lesson Missions in the United States What state do you live in? What do missions look like in the United States? It is much the same as around the rest of the world. People in the United States live in poverty and many go to bed hungry. Food pantries provide needed food and basic necessities. Tornados, hurricanes, and floods ruin houses and businesses. Forest fires force many people to have to leave their homes to keep them safe. Missionaries help rebuild houses and provide shelters for people to stay safe. Most importantly, many Americans have never heard of Jesus. If they have heard of Jesus, they don't really know about Him. Missionaries spread the Good News. They will give out Bibles, too.

Missionaries help people in the United States by providing food, medical supplies, school supplies, and more. I Can Help Ŀith Mission Work Here are some ways you can help with missions right where you are! - Pray for missions. - Bring canned food to a local food pantry. - Donate clothes to Salvation Army or similar place. - Send cards to missionaries who work with your church.
