Saint Hilary Advent Retreat December 3-5, 2018 Seeking Light in a Time of Darkness Advent is more than a time to check our Christmas gift list. It is a time to slow down and focus on God s active presence in our lives the One who is Light in times of darkness and Peace in a world disrupted by violence. We don t have to go away to a retreat house to get more focus at this hectic pre-christmas time. Come to Saint Hilary for the parish s Advent Retreat. Here s a chance to catch your breath in this hectic season. Sister Patricia Bruno, O.P., and Siciliano, O.P., two Dominican preachers, are returning to our parish and will lead our retreat. From Monday through Wednesday (December 3-5) we will gather three times each day for prayer: 8:30 a.m. morning Eucharist (time) in the Church. 9:15 a.m. followed by an informal scriptural reflection in Tarantino Hall. 7:00 p.m. each evening we will meet for an hour s prayer, preaching and ritual in Church. Our days together will focus on the Scriptures. We will rediscover how they address the contemporary issues of our lives and the needs of our world. As a Church, we turn to the Scriptures each time we gather at Eucharist, weddings, baptisms and funeral services because they speak express the deep emotions of the human heart and tell us how God is reaching out to be with and help us. Retreat time is an opportunity to slow down and focus on what is important. These retreat days of community prayer will not only help us deepen our faith, but also will affirm and support the gifts we have to share with one another. All are most welcome children, teens, adults. Families, single people. Those who can take part in one event, or those who are able to attend all the retreat events. Father Brown
Are you or someone you love dealing with separation or divorce? The Archdiocese strives to make known Christ s healing love, so that all who suffer from separation and divorce might experience new life, reconciliation and restoration, meet people in a similar position and find help to rebuild their own lives. We also recognize that separated and divorced people are not mere recipients of the Church's compassion; they are ministers of that compassion. Through their vulnerability, suffering, courage, faithfulness, and patient endurance they bear witness to Christ and his redeeming grace in the world. Eucharistic Adoration Chapel Our Lord is waiting for you in our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel! As promised last week, more history about the Blessed Sacrament: Containers As monasticism changed from solitary to community life, the custom of Fermentum was extended to the working monks. They would have the Species on their person in the fields or on a voyage. It was carried in a small receptacle (chrismal) worn bandoleer fashion, or in a tiny bag (parula) tied around the neck under the clothing. Irish and English manuscripts describe this custom used to provide the Eucharist when needed away from the home monastery. As early as 325 AD (Council of Nicea) we know that the Eucharist was also reserved in the churches, monasteries and convents. Again, the main reason was for availability for the sick and dying, and Fermentum. It was kept in a special room, just off the sanctuary, but separated from the church where Mass was offered. (Next Week: Pyx) If you would like to sign up for a specific Holy Hour in our Eucharistic Adoration chapel, please contact Shawn Sylvia: SSylvia@sbcglobal.net. St. Hilary Parish Advent Retreat December 1-5 We welcome Siciliano, O.P. and Sister Patricia Bruno, O.P. We invite all parishioners to join in on this Retreat most especially our Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, St. Hilary School and Religious Education teachers, Members of the RCIA team, Scripture study and Prayer groups.
