The Tabernacle, The Temple and the Church Lesson Eight Prophecies and Fulfillments Of The Savior 2
Gen. 12:1. Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." 3
Daniel 9:25.. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 4
John 1:41. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. John 4:25. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 5
THE PROPHETS WROTE OF GOD S PLAN Romans 1:2 Paul did not specify the passages from the prophets he had in mind when he wrote of the gospel [God] promised... through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures, probably because of his reader s familiarity with those Scriptures. For these early Christians, the Old Testament continued to be their authority, and they knew of many references to God s plan and the Messiah. Here are several references Paul might have pointed to: 6
Genesis 12:3. The Messiah would come from Abraham s line, and through the Messiah All the families of the earth will be blessed through you. Psalm 16:10. The promise of the resurrection given to David: the Messiah, your godly one, would be resurrected. Psalm 40:6-10. The Messiah would take joy in doing your will, my God, and would accomplish that will so completely as to die on the cross. Psalm 118:22. The Messiah would be rejected by his own people, but would become the corner -stone, the most important part of the church. 7
Isaiah 11:1ff. The Messiah will be the Branch that will be bearing fruit in the form of believers. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him. Isaiah 49:5-6. The Messiah will gather Israel and be a light for the Gentiles. Zechariah 9:9-11. The Messiah would come to his people riding on a donkey, which He did in His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Zechariah 12:10. The Messiah would be pierced on the cross, and many would mourn his death. Malachi 4:1-5. The Messiah s arrival will be heralded by one like the prophet Elijah, who was to be John the Immerser. 8
NAMES FOR THE MESSIAH Isaiah 9:6 Isaiah uses four names in 9:6 to describe the Messiah. These names have special meaning to us. Wonderful Counselor: He is exceptional, distinguished, and without peer, the one who gives the right advice. Mighty God: He is God Himself. Everlasting Father: He is timeless; He is God our Father. Prince of Peace: His government is one of justice and peace. 9
Some Old Testament Prophecies And Their New Testament Fulfillment 10
Messiah To Be Born In Bethlehem Micah 5:2.But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Matt. 2:1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 11
Messiah To Be Born of A Virgin Isa.7:14. Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Matt. 1:21. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 12
Messiah To Be Rejected By His Own People (Jews) Isaiah 53:1. Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Matt. 26:3. Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him. 13
John 6:54. Whoso eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He that eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, dwells in me, and I in him. John 6:64. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 14
Messiah Mocked And Insulted Psalm 22:7. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, 8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. Matt. 27:39. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, You that destroys the temple, and rebuild it in three days, save yourself. If you be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. 15
Messiah Was To Die By Crucifixion Psalm 22:14. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the middle of my bowels. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and you have brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. Matt. 27:34. They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 16
John 20:24. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27 Then He said to Thomas, Reach here your finger, and behold my hands; and reach here your hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. 29 Jesus said unto him, Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of 17 his disciples, which are not written in this book:
Messiah To Die As A Sacrifice For Sin Isaiah 53:5. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. John 1:29. The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world. 18
Messiah To Be Raised From The Dead Psalm 16:10. For you will not leave my soul in hell;(the grave) neither will you allow your Holy One to see corruption. 19
Matt. 28:1. In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Do not fear : for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 20
