November 25, 2018 Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Matthew 6:33 I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Dear Parish Family, CHRISTUS VINCIT! CHRISTUS REGNAT! CHRISTUS IMPERAT! Christ Conquers! Christ Reigns! Christ Commands! This Sunday is the last Sunday of the liturgical year. As such, our focus in the Scriptures and prayers for this day are directly on Jesus. Jesus, the Word made flesh, the splendor of the Father, in whom and through whom all things came to be, IS Lord and King of all. After completing since last Advent an entire liturgical year of celebrating the incarnation, life, mission, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we celebrate this Solemnity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. We in this country are not used to such terms as king and lord. Images of royalty and monarchies have little to do with our democratic way of life. Yet, these terms signify that it is in Christ that we find our direction, our leadership, and our goal. But we find him as such in an unconventional way. Jesus does not match the ideas of royalty that we may have. Instead of a golden crown, he wears piercing thorns on his head. Instead of a majestic throne, he is nailed to a cross. Jesus, in giving himself up completely on our behalf, is a king of mercy. His rule is a turning upside-down of the idea of ruling through domination and power. Instead, his kingdom is one of service to others; love of others; compassion for others; especially those who are in most need of mercy. Our call on this great Solemnity is to recommit our allegiance to this king. As Jesus disciples, let us follow his example of compassion and love and service for all people. *************************************************************** Next weekend, we begin the season of Advent and a new liturgical year. Help is needed to set up the Art & Environment for this holy season in anticipation of Christmas, so if you re available after 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, please come and offer your assistance. God bless you. Father Ed

John 18:36 How often do we put all our time and energy into building a kingdom here on earth, forgetting that life here is short? The real kingdom is in the next life.
