THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST June 3, 2018 Theme of the Day: What gets in the way of confession and absolution? Individualism, moralism, minimalism and hedonism. This weekend, we look at moralism. Moralism says, I have no sin to confess. PRESERVICE WELCOME INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP (From 1 John 1:8 9 and James 4:10) P: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. P: Let us humble ourselves before God, and he will lift us up! HYMN Baptismal Waters Cover Me 616 (stanzas 1 4) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Sisters and brothers in Christ, Martin Luther addresses confession in his Small Catechism with these words. Consider your place in life according to the Ten Commandments: Are you a father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, or worker? Have you been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy? Have you been hottempered, rude, or quarrelsome? Have you hurt someone by your words or deeds? Have you stolen, been negligent, wasted anything, or done any harm? Silence for self-examination and reflection upon God s Word P: Together we confess All: Almighty God, merciful Father, I have sinned in thought, word and deed by my fault, by my own fault, my own most grievous fault. P: Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for you and for his sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by his authority, I 2
therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. P: Let us humble ourselves before God, and he will lift us up! HYMN Baptismal Waters Cover Me 616 (stanza 5) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Merciful and mighty Savior, you call us to a new life that is marked by radical love for you and for our neighbor. By your Holy Spirit create in us a holy hunger for such a life; for you live and reign with the Father and Holy Spirit, God forever. All: Amen. THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 8:00a OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE The Lord s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but his true body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another (Matthew 26:26 28). Our Lord invites to his table those who have been baptized, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). Because those who eat and drink our Lord s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:28 30) and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. If you need communion delivered to you, please notify an usher or elder before the service begins. Gluten free communion wafers are available by raising your index finger as Christ s body is distributed, signaling the elder that you wish to receive a prewrapped gluten free wafer. The wrapping can be placed in the box at the end of the first pew with the individual cups. Individual cups, should be held until the chalice has passed. Non-alcoholic wine is available in the tinted cups. If you have some other allergy or need, please contact the church office so special arrangements can be made. Children or adults who have not yet been confirmed are invited to come forward for a blessing. As you do so, please cross yourselves by placing your arms over your chest. PREFACE/PROPER PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. 5
