SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Growing in Joy June 2 & 3, 2018 AS WE GATHER Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob! (Psalm 81:1). God ordained the Sabbath for the benefit of His people, as a source of refreshment and of joy. The Sabbath Day is the culmination of the week and gives meaning to all of the other days. With joy we gather for worship on the Lord s Day. He is here! We have much to celebrate! WELCOME "[Jesus said,] The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." (John 14:26) HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN This Is The Day W&R #652 This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made; we will rejoice, we will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made. (sing 3 times) INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? People: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it. 1 CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Beloved of God, let us confess together that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that daily we have sinned against our gracious God and deserve His punishment now and eternally. We have sought our own ways and have not always kept the Sabbath in ways that honor Him. We have transgressed His Law in our thoughts, words, and deeds. People: Almighty God, we repent of our sins and seek your mercy. Be gracious to us, and for the sake of Jesus, grant us your forgiveness so that, as your redeemed people, we find the joy of absolution and with renewed hearts serve you in time and in eternity. In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE #803 Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee Joyful, joyful we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flow rs before Thee, Praising Thee, their sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the gloom of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heav n reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow ry meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird, and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean-depth of happy rest! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Fountainhead of love divine: Joyful, we Thy heav n inherit! Joyful, we by grace are Thine! SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. 2

Let us pray. Eternal God, your Son, Jesus Christ, is our true Sabbath rest. Help us to keep each day holy by receiving His Word of comfort, that we may find our rest in Him, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BAPTISM HYMN (8:00 & 10:30) #593 See This Wonder in the Making See this wonder in the making: God Himself this child is taking As a lamb safe in His keeping, His to be, awake or sleeping. Miracle each time it happens As the door to heaven opens And the Father beams, Beloved, Heir of gifts a king would covet! Far more tender than a mother, Far more caring than a father, God, into Your arms we place them, With Your love and peace embrace them. Here we bring a child of nature; Home we take a newborn creature, Now God s precious son or daughter, Born again by Word and water. BAPTISM of Mackenzie Gayle Meinzen (8:00) Page 268 BAPTISM of Teagan May Hackbarth (10:30) Page 268 Please refrain from taking photos during the worship service. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Deuteronomy 5:12 15 (The Sabbath Day observance) Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 3 EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 4:5 12 (Treasure in jars of clay) For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. CHOIR ANTHEM (5:00) You Are Mine HOLY GOSPEL Mark 2:23 3:6 (Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath.) One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him? And he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath. Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man with the withered hand, Come here. And he said to them, Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #515 Rejoice, Rejoice, Believers Rejoice, rejoice, believers, And let your lights appear; The evening is advancing, And darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising And soon is drawing nigh. Up, pray and watch and wrestle; At midnight comes the cry. 4 continued

The watchers on the mountain Proclaim the Bridegroom near; Go forth as He approaches With alleluias clear. The marriage feast is waiting; The gates wide open stand. Arise, O heirs of glory; The Bridegroom is at hand. The saints, who here in patience Their cross and suff rings bore, Shall live and reign forever When sorrow is no more. Around the throne of glory The Lamb they shall behold; In triumph cast before Him Their diadems of gold. Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; Arise, O Sun so longed for, O er this benighted sphere. With hearts and hands uplifted, We plead, O Lord, to see The day of earth s redemption That sets Your people free! SERMON Lord of the Sabbath Mark 2:23-3:6 CREED The Third Article People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? People: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. THEME CELEBRATION Growing in Joy The color green that we see on the paraments and on my stole reminds us that we are entering the growing season in the life of the Church. With few changes, the color green will be what greets us 5 each week when we enter your worship area for the next months. Our growth in worship is nurtured in many ways, including music. Today, we celebrate the joy that we know through the sounds of voices and also through instruments tuned for the praise of God. OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register to see the names of those to greet after the service. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH The Lord provides for His people a place of rest in His Son, Jesus Christ. Let us commend ourselves, one another and our whole life into His loving hands. Holy Father, remember your Church throughout all the world and strengthen the faith of all your children. People: Give to your baptized children a rich share in your light and in your peace. At the dawn of time, you commanded the light to shine in the darkness, and through the preaching of your Son s victory you have made your light to shine in our hearts. Bless the proclamation of all the servants of your Word, especially our own pastors, our Together in Mission partner, Chuck Ferry, and Rachel Meyer serving in Uganda. People: Keep them from ever proclaiming themselves, but empower them to proclaim Jesus as Lord and themselves as servants for His sake. Father in heaven, at the beginning of time you said that it was not good for the man to be alone, and so you created woman and instituted marriage. We rejoice with John and Judy as they celebrate their 55 th wedding anniversary. People: Bless them and all Christian couples to love each other as you have loved them. 6

Father in heaven, we rejoice when you gather more people into the Kingdom of Christ through the waters of Holy Baptism. Therefore we rejoice with the Meinzen family as Mackenzie Gayle is baptized into Christ and also with the Hackbarth family as Teagan May is connected to Christ. People: Guard and protect these little ones and inspire and empower their parents to raise them in the nurture and admonition of Jesus Christ. Almighty God, you are the source of all knowledge, and so we rejoice with those graduating in these days from our school, from high school, and from college. People: Bless them to use their knowledge to serve others and glorify you. King of the nations, to your kindness and care we commend the Congress of the United States, the president, all judges and magistrates, and all who bear positions of public service in our land. People: Make them a blessing of yours, and prosper them in every good deed. Kind One, in the gift of Sabbath to your ancient people, you taught them that all have a share in the goodness of your creation. Remember all who struggle to find employment, to get out of debt, to provide for their loved ones. People: Open the hearts of all, that we may share with others your rich bounty and be delivered from all greed and selfish care. Hope of the heavy-hearted, remember in your love all those who are afflicted in any way, that they may not be crushed; the perplexed, that they may not despair; the persecuted, that they may not be forsaken; and those struck down, that they may not be destroyed. We especially commend to you all whom we have been asked to remember at this altar: Dorothy, Carol, Anita, Cindy, Pastor Bender, Junie, Carlene, RoseMarie, Tony, Nancy, Sue, Jan, Dolores, Pat, Cliff, Shirley, Gladys, Herb, Matthew, Russ, Arlene, Dorothy, John, Arlene, Jack, Pat, Shirley, Jonathan, Helen, Leonard and Sarah. People: Hold them fast, remind them of your presence, and grant them healing and hope. 7 Father of glory, your Son revealed Himself as the Lord of love. He sets before us a rich feast in which He still touches us and heals us and does us good, inviting us to receive the very price of our salvation, His true body and blood. People: Help all who come to the altar today to rest in His promises and to revel in His love. Source of all being and life, receive our grateful praise for all those who died trusting in the Savior s mercy and so live in Him forevermore. People: As we await the day of the resurrection when the Spirit will cause the life of Jesus to be fully manifested in our mortal bodies, fill us with hope and joyful expectation. Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. THE LORD S PRAYER (5:00) THE WORDS OF OUR LORD SACRAMENT THE PEACE OF THE LORD The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI O Lamb of God, You take away The sin of this world; thus we pray, Grant us Your mercy and Your peace Until all days and years shall cease. Text: Copyright 2018 Concordia Publishing House. HYMN #720 We Walk by Faith and Not by sight We walk by faith and not by sight, No gracious words we hear From Him who spoke as none e er spoke, but we believe Him near. We may not touch His hands and side, Nor follow where He trod; But in His promise we rejoice And cry My Lord and God! 8 continued

Help then, O Lord, our unbelief; And may our faith abound To call on you when you are near And seek where you are found. For You, O resurrected Lord, Are found in means divine: Beneath the water and the Word, Beneath the bread and wine. Lord, when our life of faith is done, In realms of clearer light We may behold you as you are, With full and endless sight. HYMN #621 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Let all mortal flesh keep silence And with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly-minded, For with blessing in His hand Christ our God to earth descending Comes our homage to demand. King of kings yet born of Mary, As of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords in human vesture, In the body and the blood, He will give to all the faithful His own self for heav nly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven Spreads its vanguard on the way As the Light of Light, descending From the realms of endless day, Comes the pow rs of hell to vanquish As the darkness clears a way. At His feet the six-winged seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the presence As with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, Lord Most High! HYMN #625 Lord Jesus Christ, Life-Giving Bread Lord Jesus Christ, life giving bread, May I in grace possess You. Let me with holy food be fed. In hunger I address You. Prepare me well for You, O Lord, And, humbly by my prayer implored, Give me Your grace and mercy. To pastures green, Lord, safely guide, To restful waters lead me; Your table well for me provide, Your wounded hand now feed me. Though weary, sinful, sick, and weak, Refuge in You alone I seek, To share Your cup of healing. O bread of heav n, my soul s delight, For full and free remission I come with prayer before Your sight In sorrow and contrition. Your righteousness, Lord, cover me That I receive You worthily, Assured of Your full pardon. 9 continued I do not merit favor, Lord, My weight of sin would break me; In all my guilty heart s discord, O Lord, do not forsake me. In my distress this comforts me That You receive me graciously, O Christ, my Lord of mercy! COMMON DISMISSAL POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Almighty and ever-living God, we thank you for having fed us with the body and blood of our Savior Jesus Christ, assuring us thereby that we are truly members of His Body, the Church. We ask you to help us by your Holy Spirit that we continue in this fellowship and do the good works you desire us to do; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, to whom, with you and the same Spirit, be all honor and glory, forever and ever. BENEDICTION The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. CLOSING HYMN #813 Rejoice, O Pilgrim Throng Stanzas 1, 2, 3, 7 Rejoice, O pilgrim Throng! Rejoice, give thanks and sing; Your festal banner wave on high, The cross of Christ your king. Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! With voice as full and strong As ocean s surging praise, Send forth the sturdy hymns of old, The psalms of ancient days. Refrain With all the angel choirs, With all the saints on earth Pour out the strains of joy and bliss, True rapture, noblest mirth. Refrain Praise Him who reigns on high, The Lord whom we adore: The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, One God forevermore.
