Welcome! In this summer s worship series, Alive, we ll explore the work of the Holy Spirit. Understanding the Holy Spirit (also known as Spirit of God, Holy Ghost, Breath of God, Paraclete, and a bunch more) is essential to understanding God s work and will. God; in communion with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and people like us; has made a new spiritual community where all people are welcome. Welcome to the Kingdom of God! When the Spirit is moving, love for God naturally flows to love for our neighbor. Love is the greatest commandment. Nothing matters more than love. Parents, you can find canvas activity bags for your children in the back of the sanctuary. For infants up through age three, the nursery is available. Thank you for joining us today. We welcome you! You are also invited to take an Announcements sheet here at Easter, or visit easter.org for events & activities (Announcement sheets are posted weekly under Events & News). Spirit of God Loving Neighbor July 1, 2018 8:30 & 10 a.m. This summer, the June and August worship services will feature a setting written by Ben Kornelis. If you d like to become familiar with the music, go to easter.org (Sermons) and click on the green button. During July, we will be using Marty Haugen s Now the Feast and Celebration setting. This worship series is based upon the book We make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren. Prelude: Trumpet Concerto in Eb Major, Mvt. II: Andante - Haydn Nathan Loesch, trumpet Greetings and Announcements Easter Lutheran Church to grow in faith and carry on the work of Jesus Christ Gathering Confession and Forgiveness Pastor: Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide Congregation: Our brokenness is too deep to undo by ourselves. Anthem: The Call Patric Hawes (b. 1958) Mia DeJong, vocalist Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: Such a Way as gives us breath: Such a Truth as ends all strife: And such a Life as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: Such a light as shows a Feast: Such a Feast as mends in length: Such a Strength as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my love, my Heart: Such a Joy as none can move: Such a Love as none can part: Such a Heart as joys in love. George Herbert (1593-1633) 2012 Novello & Company Limited Children s Message Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Lesson: Acts 10: 34-48 (NRSV) Then Peter began to speak to them: I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. 5

Lesson: 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 (NRSV) Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Sermon Pastor Tom Hansen Hymn of the Day: In Christ There Is No East Or West Hymnal #650 6

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Another translation of catholic church is church universal Prayers of Intercession Each prayer petition will conclude: Pastor: Lord, in your mercy, Congregation: Hear our prayer. Offering of Gifts Meal Offertory: Amnesty - Heitzig, arr. Hara/Lazarus Nathan Loesch, trumpet Presentation: Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Hymnal #885 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heav nly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Offering Prayer God of life, be here now warming our hearts. You, who dwells in the wind; you, who breathes just like us; remind us to share. Inspire us to live fully. Remind us that we live within the breath of your Spirit. We thank you for your love and grace which sustains us every day. In your living name we pray, Amen. The offering is an act of worship. We give ourselves, our time and resources as a symbol of our love and appreciation for God s grace, and our investment in God s work through this church. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy 8 Marty Haugen, 1990, GIA Publications, Inc., All rights reserved.
