Creeds & the Trinity: Who is God? Memory Work: I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully MADE; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 Teaching Time The Creeds What is a creed? The word creed comes from the Latin word credo meaning I BELIEVE. There are 3 main creeds in the Christian church: 1) The APOSTLES Creed grew out of the Church around 150 A.D. from simple baptismal questions. 2) The NICENE Creed was written by the Church in 381 A.D. as a formal statement of the Christian faith. 3) The ATHANASIAN Creed was developed in 581 A.D. to clarify the Christian Trinitarian faith and to condemn all forms of heresy (wrong teaching) being taught about God. The Apostle s and Nicene Creeds are split into 3 parts, called articles. They focus on the ACTION of each person of the Trinity. The Athanasian Creed focuses on the RELATIONSHIP between the three persons of the Trinity. The First Article: God the Father I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth. What does God the Father mean? God the Father: Is a LOVING Father. 1 John 3:1 Finds JOY in us. Psalm 16:3 Is slow to ANGER. Psalm 103:8 Why is He called Maker of Heaven and Earth? In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. Genesis 1:1 By the WORD of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the BREATH of His mouth. For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm. Psalm 33:6&9 What things does our Father in heaven provide for us? (see the explanation in the Catechism, p15) My BODY and soul, eyes, ears, and all my MEMBERS My REASON and all my senses ALL I have (STEWARDSHIP) Before the mountains were BORN or You brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. Psalm 90:2 Why does it matter that God is Creator? God PROVIDES for His Creation. Matthew 7:25-34 God DELIVERS His Creation. Psalm 107:19-21 God REDEEMS and restores His Creation. Revelation 21:5 Main Point: You area unique and unreproducible miracle of God! Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 1

Reflection Time Use this space to silently reflect on these questions: 1) Would your life be different without faith in God? How? 2) Read the memory verse again. What does it mean that you are fearfully and wonderfully made? 3) What does it mean to you that God cares for you and protects you? 4) What questions do you have about God and His creation? 5) Read 1 Samuel 16:7. Why do you think God cares more about the heart than our appearance? Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 2

Creeds & the Trinity: Who is God the Son? Memory Work: Memorize the Apostle s Creed Teaching Time The second article of the Apostle s Creed is all about JESUS. Look at the explanation to the 2 nd article in the Catechism on p16. What are the three key ideas? Who is Jesus? His name: Jesus (Gk), Yeshua (Hb) = God saves. His title: Christ (Gk), Messiah (Hb) = Chosen or Anointed One Together: Jesus Christ is the one chosen by God to be our savior. The Two Natures DIVINE Nature (Conceived by the Holy Spirit) As fully God as God the Father HUMAN Nature (Born of the Virgin Mary) As fully human as you or I And yet ONE person Not a 50-50 split or multiple personality How do we know that Jesus was fully man? He was HUNGRY (Matthew 4:2) & He was THIRSTY. (John 19:28) He was TEMPTED. Hebrews 4:15 He CRIED (John 11:35) & He had FEELINGS. Matthew 26:38 He had a BODY. Luke 24:39 Why was it so important that Jesus was born of a virgin and fully a man? Only a man could fulfill the law of PERFECTION. Only a man could suffer and DIE in our place because we failed to keep the law. How do we know that Jesus was fully God? He FORGAVE sins. Mark 2:5 He knew ALL things (omniscient). John 21:17 He is present EVERYWHERE (omnipresent). Matthew 28:20 He is all POWERFUL (omnipotent). Matthew 8:26 He is ETERNAL (without a beginning or an end). John 1:1-2 Why is it so important that He was true God? Only God could be PERFECT. Only God could overcome DEATH and the DEVIL for us. Which is more important, Good Friday or Easter? Jesus was either: a Lunatic, a Liar, or Lord. MAIN POINT: You are SAVED and redeemed by Jesus! Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 3

Answer these questions: 1) If someone asked you why Jesus had to be both man and God, how would you answer them? 2) Jesus died on a cross (one of the worst ways ever devised to kill someone). Describe what you think was going through Jesus' mind. See Matthew 26:38-39 for some of his prayer. 3) What was the purpose of the Resurrection? Does the Resurrection give you hope in life today? Should it? 4) Who is Jesus to you? If He is your Savior and Lord, does your life show that - why or why not? Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 4

Confirmation: Third Article Memory Verse of the Week: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 Teaching Time The Church on Earth and in Heaven The Third Article of the Apostle s Creed I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? The Holy Christian Church The word church has many definitions and uses. What do you think of when you think of the word church? The word church in Greek is the word ekklesia, meaning CALLED OUT The church is also described in the Bible as the BODY of Christ. Visible Church Invisible Church Visible Church = what WE see when WE look with our EYES Invisible Church = what GOD sees when HE looks at the HEART. Local Church Universal Church Local Church = a local, GEOGRAPHIC grouping of Christians. A CONGREGATION. Universal/catholic/Christian Church = the body of Christ. All believers, every PLACE every TIME. Communion of the Saints A saint is one who has been MADE holy. Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 5

What about Denominations? A denomination is a group of churches that share a common understanding of who God is and what he wants for us. They have agreed to partner together in the work God has given them. Denominations provide consistency, mutual accountability, and joint work. Just as Christians are intended to be part of a larger body, a local church, so local churches are intended to be part of a larger whole, The Church. For a more in depth look at denominations, see the appendix at the end of this lesson. Who is in the church? Is the church better defined by a fence or a water well, by a sheep gate or a shepherd? See John 10:1-21 The Forgiveness of Sins John 20:22-23 ESV And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (23) If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld." Matthew 16:19 ESV I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." The Office of the Keys The Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given to his church on earth to forgive the sins of repentant sinners, but to withhold forgiveness from unrepentant sinners as long as they do not repent. o This power is given to ALL BELIEVERS, not just to pastors. Pastors exercise this power publicly, but all of us are called to do so in our daily lives. o This power is given to us so long as we follow GOD S WORD. Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 6

The Resurrection of the Body 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 ESV (42) So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. (43) It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. (44) It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. Our hope as Christians is for the physical resurrection of the body. As God s original creation was good, so his new creation will also be good. Our new body will be like the Easter body of Jesus: o Physical, able to be touched, to eat, to be recognized o Not limited by ordinary physics, space, time. o Healed and perfected, yet his scars and nail holes remain. What happens when you die? The Bible doesn t say much about the in between time. The thief is promised, Today, you will be with me in paradise. (Luke 23:40-43) The souls of believers are in the hands of God, crying out How long?, waiting for something better in the fullness of time. (Rev 6:9-11) The Life Everlasting. Amen. The consequences of sin and death have been cancelled, as Christ took the punishment for us. In heaven, we will be face to face with God. What that will be like we can only imagine. o Revelation presents several pictures, in chapters 7, 21, and 22 o C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle, presents another great picture Summary We live in the tension of the now and the not yet. In the church on earth, we experience the beginnings of God s re-creative work in this world. While not perfect, it is God s tool to reach and care for us, and our tool to reach the rest of the world and bring them in as well. And yet, we wait and look forward to the even greater blessings to be revealed to us when Christ comes again in glory. Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 7

Reflection Time Use this space to silently reflect on these questions: 1. Which 2-3 people have had a big impact on your faith? Why? 2. What for you is the biggest blessing about being part of a church? 3. What is hard about being part of a church? 4. Who needs to receive your forgiveness? 5. What are you most excited to see or experience in heaven? Confirmation Lesson 1 Page 8
