Introduction Was Peter The First Pope? Did Jesus build His church on Peter by appointing him the first universal leader of His church? All matters of faith should be determined by what the Scriptures say Matters of faith not to be based on emotions, creeds or human traditions The Word of God should be our only source of faith and practice If our beliefs cannot be confirmed by the Word of God, we should humbly reject them because they are from men, not God 2 All Our Beliefs and Practices Must Be Based On The Word Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of hrist. Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 1Th 5:21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; Was Peter The First Pope? 1. Was Peter the rock on which Jesus built His church? 2. Did Jesus give Peter unique supreme authority? 3. Other contrasts between Peter and the Pope 3 4 Was Peter The First Pope? 4. Did Jesus provide for a line of succession to Peter? 5. Is the Roman atholic hierarchy Scriptural? For Each laim, We Will 1. Quote the Roman atholic claim 2. Read some Scripture given to support the claim 3. learly state what we believe the Scriptures teach 5 6

Was Peter The Rock On Which Jesus Built His hurch? Roman atholic church claims that Peter was the rock on which Jesus built His church From that one claim flow all the others we will examine in our lesson We believe the Scriptures teach that Jesus is the only rock on which His church was built, being the Son of the living God Peter Was The Rock On Which Jesus Would Build His hurch The word for Peter and for rock in the original Aramaic is one and the same; this renders it evident that the various attempts to explain the term "rock" as having reference not to Peter himself but to something else are misinterpretations. It is Peter who is the rock of the hurch. From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 7 8 Peter Was The Rock On Which Jesus Would Build His hurch "And upon this rock I will build my hurch..." Here then hrist teaches plainly that in the future the hurch will be the society of those who acknowledge Him, and that this hurch will be built on Peter. From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 9 laim Based On Matt. 16:13-18 Mat 16:13 Now when Jesus came into the district of aesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" Mat 16:14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." Mat 16:15 He *said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 10 laim Based On Matt. 16:13-18 Mat 16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the hrist, the Son of the living God." Mat 16:17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. Mat 16:18 "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not Jesus Is The ornerstone (Rock) on Which hurch Is Built As we do often, we not only look at the passage in question but also notice others that may have a bearing on its meaning Roman atholic church argues that Peter whose name means stone must be the rock Jesus is referring to here However, from other passages, it is clear that Jesus Himself is that cornerstone on which His one church is built, not Peter overpower it. 11 12

Jesus Is The ornerstone (Rock) on Which hurch Is Built 1o 3:11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus hrist. Eph 2:20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, hrist Jesus Himself being the corner stone, Jesus Is The ornerstone (Rock) on Which hurch Is Built 1Pe 2:4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, 1Pe 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus hrist. 13 14 Jesus Is The ornerstone (Rock) on Which hurch Is Built 1Pe 2:6 For this is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A HOIE STONE, A PREIOUS ORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." 1Pe 2:7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, "THE STONE WHIH THE BUILDERS REJETED, THIS BEAME THE VERY Jesus Is The ornerstone (Rock) on Which hurch Is Built 1Pe 2:8 and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. ORNER stone," 15 16 Jesus Is The ornerstone (Rock) on Which hurch Is Built In the further points of our lesson, we will note that neither Peter, the other apostles, or anyone else understood Peter to be the universal head of Jesus church on earth Jesus is the only one Head of His universal church Roman atholics like others have made the grave error of trying to insert human beings in the place of Jesus apostles 17 Did Jesus Give Peter Unique Supreme Authority Roman atholic church claims Jesus gave Peter, alone, supreme authority over all including the other apostles Although Scripture is cited to support their claim, we find no evidence of it when other passages are observed We believe Jesus apostles and later the apostle Paul received equal authority from the Holy Spirit 18

Peter Given Unique Authority To Rule In hrist s Place In all countries the key is the symbol of authority. Thus, hrist's words are a promise that He will confer on Peter supreme power to govern the hurch. Peter is to be His vicegerent, to rule in His place. From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 19 Heaven Will Approve Peter s Judicial Authority Further the character and extent of the power thus bestowed are indicated. It is a power to "bind" and to "loose" -- words which, as is shown below, denote the grant of legislative and judicial authority. And this power is granted in its fullest measure. Whatever Peter binds or looses on earth, his act will receive the Divine ratification. From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 20 Peter Supreme Among The Apostles The position of St. Peter after the Ascension, as shown in the Acts of the Apostles, realizes to the full the great commission bestowed upon him. He is from the first the chief of the Apostolic band -- not primus inter pares, but the undisputed head of the hurch From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 laim Based On Matt. 16:19 From NKJV Mat 16:19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." 21 22 Peter s Supreme Authority Not onfirmed By Word Peter received no greater authority than other apostles All were guided by the Holy Spirit into all Truth The Truth they spoke had been previously approved by the Lord and they were authorized to teach and practice only that Word Peter Not Given Exclusive Authority Mat 18:1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Mat 18:18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. 23 24

Apostolic Authority Followed Heaven s Rule Mat 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." Mat 18:18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. 25 Apostolic Authority Followed Heaven s Rule Joh 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 26 Apostolic Authority Followed Heaven s Rule Gal 1:11 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. Gal 1:12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus hrist. Gal 1:13 For you have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the church of God beyond Apostolic Authority Followed Heaven s Rule Gal 1:14 and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions. Gal 1:15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother's womb and called me through His grace, was pleased measure and tried to destroy it; 27 28 Apostolic Authority Followed Heaven s Rule Gal 1:16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood, Gal 1:17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to Damascus. Was Peter The First Pope? 4. Did Jesus provide for a line of succession to Peter? 5. Is the Roman atholic hierarchy Scriptural? Peter s Supreme Authority Not onfirmed By Word Peter received no greater authority than other apostles All were guided by the Holy Spirit into all Truth The Truth they spoke had been previously approved by the Lord and they were authorized to teach and practice only that Word 31 32 Paul Did Not Submit To Peter s Wrong Stand Gal 2:11 But when ephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. Gal 2:12 For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. 33 Paul Did Not Submit To Peter s Wrong Stand Gal 2:13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. Gal 2:14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to ephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? 34 Apostles Argued About Who Was Greatest Luk 22:23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing. Luk 22:24 And there arose also a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. Apostles Argued About Who Was Greatest Luk 22:25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called 'Benefactors.' Luk 22:26 "But it is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 35 36

Apostles Argued About Who Was Greatest Luk 22:27 "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. Other ontrasts Between Peter And The Pope Neither Peter nor the other apostles recognized him as Pope Notice some contrasts between Peter and who qualifies as Pope today Peter would not even qualify as the Pope today 37 38 Peter Married But Pope Must Be Unmarried Mat 8:14 When Jesus came into Peter's home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. 1o 9:5 Do we not have a right to take along a believing wife, even as the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and ephas? Peter alled By No Forbidden Religious Titles Mat 23:8 "But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. Mat 23:9 "Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. Mat 23:10 "Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, hrist. 39 40 Peter alled By No Forbidden Religious Titles Mat 23:11 "But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Mat 23:12 "Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. Peter Refused Human Homage And Adulation Act 10:25 When Peter entered, ornelius met him, and fell at his feet and worshiped him. Act 10:26 But Peter raised him up, saying, "Stand up; I too am just a man." 41 42

Did The Lord Provide For An Unbroken Line Of Popes? Roman atholic church claims that in order for the universal church to remain intact and faithful, there must be an unbroken line of successive Popes No Scriptures that we know of support their claim We believe apostles had no successors leaving the New Testament behind for all to follow 43 Necessity of Papal Office ontinuing After Peter If then hrist, as we have seen, established His hurch as a society subordinated to a single supreme head, it follows from the very nature of the case that this office is perpetual, and cannot have been a mere transitory feature of ecclesiastical life. For the hurch must endure to the end the very same organization which hrist established. From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 44 Necessity of Papal Office ontinuing After Peter The title pope is at present employed solely to denote the of Rome, who, in virtue of his position as successor of St. Peter, is the chief pastor of the whole hurch, the Vicar of hrist upon earth. From atholic Encyclopedia 1911 Papal Succession Not onfirmed By Word Apostles by the Holy Spirit spoke and wrote the New Testament along with other inspired men Their Word has been preserved to be our only guide They pointed to no universal earthly leaders to succeed them 45 46 Governed By New Testament Not Pope Act 2:42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 47 Governed By New Testament Not Pope 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 2Ti 3:17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 48

Governed By New Testament Not Pope 2Pe 1:12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 2Pe 1:13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, Governed By New Testament Not Pope 2Pe 1:14 knowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus hrist has made clear to me. 2Pe 1:15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. 49 50 Is The atholic Organizational Structure Scriptural? Roman atholic church claims their organizational structure is Scriptural with its three-tiered arrangement Scriptures do not confirm this We believe the universal church has no organizational structure Is The atholic Organizational Structure Scriptural? All organized universal church schemes are unauthorized hristians are organized together only on a local level, led by qualified elders 51 52 Unscriptural Three Level Roman atholic Organization One Pope ruling from a local church in Rome, over Roman Diocese and the universal church which is composed of 2946 Diocese, districts of local churches 2946 s, each ruling from a athedral (Mother church) over a Diocese having many local churches 219,583 priests each ruling a local church (parish) 53 Roman atholic Three-tiered Hierarchy Pope ((world) (diocese) (local) 54
