Page 2 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News March 18, 2018 A Lenten Charismatic Encounter with the Living Lord In our Gospel for this weekend, as we move ever closer to Holy Week, we have an image of Jesus suffering in a way that we may find familiar. "I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name." (Jn 12). Not that we need to beat ourselves up, but, by this time in Lent, our prayer, fasting and almsgiving very possibly has caused us to see in ourselves things that cause us pain. Things that may require conversion through God s loving mercy. Save me from this hour Father, glorify your name. This is exactly where we should be. Some of us may be challenged by the homeless people that may be coming a little too close for comfort. On the first day of our Good- News People program, as we were talking about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, on that rainy and cold night, a man walked in and literally sat on the floor right in our midst. The irony was overwhelming and undeniable. We did our best to address his needs as best as we were able to understand his needs. When he walked in I remember thinking how inconvenient it was for a homeless person to come and interrupt our church gathering in which we happened to be discussing how the Church, through our baptismal call, compels us to respond to just such vulnerable people. The jolting pain of my own hypocrisy flooded in. I heard more than one person say that the Lord sent this man to us on this very night, as cold and rainy as it was to test us. It was hard to explain away the truth of this test. This was no coincidence. This was a true charismatic encounter with Christ among us in the best sense of the word charismatic. Please pray for the following priests this week: Mar 18 Rev. George Benny, C.M.I., St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Burbank Mar 19 Rev. Mario Lopez, O. Carm. Norman Supancheck, St. Didacus Catholic Church, Granada Hills For Schedule of Baptism Seminars and Baptisms, please contact the Parish Office at: (818) 341-3680 or email: secretary@sjeparish.net For those baptizing at another parish and taking the Baptism Seminar here, the fee is $25 per couple Have you had any kinds of encounters over the last few weeks that have caused you to reconsider what is the meaning of prayer, fasting and almsgiving? And of course, the end game here is not to just live in that pain, however it comes. The end game is to have that pain begin some kind of conversion to mercy so that the great meaning of Jesus rising from the dead after the crucifixion comes to life within us and then comes out of our hands, feet and heart. Come Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth. Fr. Lawrence This week you will be hosted by the Filipino Ministry. Come in and enjoy the coffee, donuts and camaraderie! Page 9 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News March 18, 2018 Formation in Spiritual Discernment: That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian levels. Urge kids not to keep secrets from trusted adults... Abusers often encourage their victims to keep secrets from their parents or other trusted adults, and reinforce secrecy through bribes, threats or by making it seem fun and exciting to keep a secret. Parents should talk to their kids about secrets, and teach them the difference between fun secrets like a birthday surprise and bad secrets like unsafe touches. Kids should know that adults should never ask them to keep secrets from their parents, and if an adult does ask them to keep secrets, to talk to their parents immediately.
