News from The Astwell Benefice

From the Pastor. Sometimes I enjoy getting up at night to read, or work, or watch a silly DVD on TV. Sometimes I get up because

Wash away all of the evil things I ve done. Make me pure from my sin. Psalm 51:2

Now, as it turns out, these were no ordinary maple trees. They were very sensitive to the environment around them. But no one knew this yet.

Voice for The volunteer Tammy Zimmerman Volunteer Coordinator She enjoys crafts and especially making faces for her craft items. A secret wish is to one day meet Blake Sheldon - a country singer. She is Harrow s newest volunteer. Welcome Rose Laporte! The baby of a family of three brothers and two girls, Rose was born in LaSalle to French speaking parents. Upon hearing this little tidbit of information, I asked her, So, do you speak French? Rose shook her head and gave me a definite, No. My parents never taught us. This response seemed a bit puzzling. Being the nosy parker that I am, I pressed for a few more details. Well, I guess my parents figured if they communicated in French it would protect us children from any worriers that were in the house. When I asked her what motivates her to volunteer this is what she had to say. In my working years I put in a lot of hours. I felt like all I did was work. I began volunteering as a way of meeting new people and to socialize beyond the workplace. Volunteering was about others beside myself and I just wanted to give back. Rose volunteered her time for a number of different organizations. It was only until she experienced a decline in health that volunteering had to be placed on the backburner. 8

Like many volunteers, who have serving hearts, she would hear the call to offer her time again. It was through her church that she discovered The Village at St Clair was looking for volunteers. She began to consider taking a chance to see what kinds of opportunities would be available to her. Upon our initial meeting, it is clear that Rose loves seniors. She fondly recalls visiting her own Mother at Idler nursing home. She would pop in to make sure that Mum was having her favourite snack (toast). Perhaps it was a sense of home that comes with the smell of toast, but it wasn t long before other residents would pull up a chair and join in for toast and conversation. As we talk about the simplicity of it all it becomes apparent that one of the most important things to come out of Rose s toast program was that it provided an opportunity for the residents to connect with their peers in a very relaxed and natural way. Rose herself was surprised at the positive reaction she always got when she came to visit. The other residents looked forward to her toast visits as much as Mum did. After a moment of reflection, it was proposed that she try something similar on the Harrow neighbourhood. Her smile at this suggestion says it all. To Rose we look forward to you toast program. Your bright smile and huge heart will be a blessing to our Harrow Neighbours! 9
