Kindergarten-2nd September 5-6, 2015 Ruth Ruth; Phil 4:13 God invites us into his family. Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. This month, our memory verse is Philippians 4:13: For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Learn it ahead of time to prepare to talk about it (and why we memorize verses) with kids Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Make sure every kid got a STICKER in small group to wear home If not, give them one on the way out. Ruth wasn t from Israel. That means she wasn t part of God s family at first. The fact that she got to marry into God s family and be in the direct line of Christ shows us that God invites everyone to follow him.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. THE GLEANING GAME *Split kids into four small groups (even if you ll have more or fewer groups later). Assign each small group a color (you can hand one kid a piece of full-sized construction paper in that color to help the group remember). Have groups huddle on one side of the room while an adult scatters the strips of colored paper (each service has a large ziploc bag with strips; please only use one bag) When you say, Go groups race to pick up all of their colors. Whichever team gets all their colors most quickly and returns to their original spot, wins Play several rounds. Then break into the small groups you ll be in after Large Group and debrief: o How did it feel to gather those papers? o Did any of you get a lot of papers? Were any of you unable to get papers? CONNECT: o How did you first hear about God or Jesus? (And if kids haven t yet, ask them who brought them to Kids Club, because they will hear about God today) *You may want to play this again at the end of today s lesson. So collect the strips and save them for later Before you go to Large Group, you can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that God wants everyone to be part of his family and (2) identify a friend they d like to invite to follow Jesus or at least learn about Jesus with them. Why? Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples or to make his family bigger. We want to encourage kids to follow that mandate. Tip: Make sure to take the large tear-off sheet of paper back to the room with you REVIEW AND DIG DEEP 1. Why wasn t Ruth a part of God s family at first? (she was from Moab; God s family was from Israel) 2. How did Ruth and Naomi become friends? (Ruth was married to Naomi s son) 3. How did Ruth take care of Naomi? (she went home with her and got a job) 4. How did God take care of Ruth? (he caused Boaz to leave food out for her, then marry her) 5. How did Ruth get to become a part of God s family? (marry Boaz and eventually Jesus was born into her family line) 6. Why does God want EVERYONE to be a part of his family? (he loves every one of his creation) MAKE IT PERSONAL Give each kid 4 popsicle sticks and a Ruth, Naomi, Boaz, and baby image. Using glue sticks, they should glue the Ruth, Naomi, Boaz and baby head at the top of the popsicle sticks (one image per stick). They can color clothes onto the stick too. Then give kids a grain image. Help them act the story out as a group (or lead them through it once; then pair them up to practice it). You can use a script that goes something like this: o Ruth was from Moab (not God s family) o Naomi was from Israel (part of God s family) o One day, they lost their husbands. Naomi told Ruth to go to Moab, but Ruth said, No I m staying with you. She wanted to be part of God s family. o Ruth and Naomi went and gleaned grain in the field of a guy named Boaz. o o Boaz saw that Ruth was caring for Naomi and started leaving her extra grain. Then, Boaz married Ruth (Continue on the following page)

2 o Boaz and Ruth had kids who had kids who had kids and one day baby Jesus the rescuer was born o Ruth got to be a really special part of God s family Let them practice with each other. Give them this challenge: Tell one friend about Ruth this week (Try to think of a friend that s never heard about God s family before.) *Pray together, thanking God that he wants everybody to be part of his family. BEFORE KIDS LEAVE SMALL GROUP, give each of them a Kids Club sticker to wear home. Tell them that they can use their props and watch today s video (and lots of other videos) with their family or friends at home. Encourage them to show their parents the sticker Then give kids a coloring page. If you still have extra time, play the gleaning game again (just remember to re-use your service s bag of colored strips).

1 You ve got the chance to share how you came to know Jesus. Consider ahead of time what God might want you to share. Even though this lesson is all about inviting others to join God s family, keep in mind that some kids may be hearing this for the first time or may not have made a choice to follow God yet themselves. Use language that includes kids, wherever they may be on their faith journey. WELCOME AND INTRO (4 min.) Hi everybody Welcome to Kids Club. It s great to see you here. Your game looked pretty fun. Raise your hand if your group picked up your papers the fastest at least once (let groups raise hands). Well done But before we talk about that, I d love to hear how you guys heard about God or Jesus for the very first time. Does anybody want to share? (Let 3-6 kids share, depending on your group. For younger kids, you could just have them share the name of the person who first told them about Jesus.) Wow, that s awesome And if you ve never heard about God yet, that s OK Today, we re going to talk all about him. I didn t know about God until (share your personal story about how you first heard about Jesus). GOD BUILT A FAMILY FOR US (click to show world image) We ve been talking about how God created a perfect world to be our home. Then he made people special, so he could love us and we could love him back. But since people messed up and made choices to disobey God, the world became full of more and more wrong things. And now we all get sick and sad or mean and eventually we even die. The good news is, God loves us way too much to leave us like that He started a special family. And he sent his own son Jesus to be born into this family and rescue us from all the wrong things in the world. And one day, we can live with him forever But for right now, we can make the choice to believe that even though we ve done wrong things, Jesus rescued us. When we believe that, we become part of God s family WE BELONG IN THAT FAMILY To think about what it s like to be in God s family, I want you to close your eyes. (Let kids

respond.) Think about how it feels when you don t get invited to a birthday party. Or when your brother or sister ignore you or won t let you play with them. Or if somebody doesn t share with you. Now open your eyes. (Let kids open.) How does that make you feel? (Let kids respond.) Yeah, sad, left out, lonely. We re going to watch a quick clip that gives us an idea of what this can look like. This is from a movie called Inside Out, where feelings are characters. As you watch, imagine how you would feel if you were the all-blue character called Sadness. Video: First Day of School (about 1 minute) Wow, everybody trace a circle around you to imagine how Sadness felt (let kids trace). How did she feel? (Let kids respond.) Yes, she felt like she wasn t needed or wanted. She felt even more sad Let me see your sad faces (let kids make sad faces). BUT guess what?? God wants everybody to be part of his family If he had a birthday party, he d invite us all. Everybody erase that circle you just pretended to draw (let kids respond). God includes everybody in his rescue plan GOD S FAMILY (1 min.) Today, we re going to talk about one woman who got to become part of his family. Her name was Ruth. Can you guys say, Ruth? (Let kids say it.) Great Ruth was not part of God s special family, the Israelites. She was from Moab, which was actually an enemy of Israel. Ruth married a man from God s family and became good friends with his mom, Naomi. One day, Ruth s husband died, and so did Naomi s. They were left alone, so Naomi decided to go back to her family in Israel, and she told Ruth to go back to her family in Moab. But guess what? Ruth didn t want to go back to Moab She wanted to go with Naomi and be part of God s family We re going to watch a video about how God took care of Ruth and how she got to be part of his family. As you watch, see if you can find at least ONE way God welcomed Ruth into his family. Video: KBS / Ruth (about 3 minutes) So how did God welcome Ruth into his family? (Let kids respond). That s right, God caused a guy named Boaz to care about her. Boaz left Ruth lots of food in the field so she could take it home and share it with Naomi. Does anybody remember what that s called? (Let a kid say: gleaning). That s right, gleaning. It s kind of like the game you guys played, when you picked up colors of paper. Ruth had to do that every day if she wanted to eat But God made sure she always had enough. Then what did Boaz do? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he married her And they had kids who had kids who had kids and on and on until who was born? (Let kids say: Jesus.) Yep, Jesus, God s own son and our Rescuer

GOD WANTS EVERYONE TO BE PART OF HIS FAMILY (1 min.) And guess what? God loves ALL of us and wants us all to be in his family. It doesn t matter if we live in Israel or Moab or America in (site location) or wherever Now that God sent Jesus, when we admit that we mess up, believe that Jesus rescued us and choose to follow God, we get to be part of his family In fact, Jesus gave his followers a very special job: he said to go and make his family bigger So just like Naomi told Ruth about God, somebody told YOU guys about God. And told me about God. And now we might be the ones to tell somebody else RESPOND AND PRAY (2 min.) There are lots of ways to share Jesus with our friends I m going to show you a picture and if you think this is a good way to share Jesus, give me a thumbs up If not, thumbs down. Ready? (image of telling) Telling a friend about part of God s Story, like those kids in the video (thumbs up) (image of KC) Inviting a friend to Kids Club (thumbs up) (image of sticking out tongue) Sticking out your tongue at somebody (thumbs down) (image of give box) Giving money to help others (thumbs up) (image of praying) Praying for our friends to know Jesus (thumbs up) Any other ideas? (Let kids share; assure them that are LOTS of ways to tell friends about Jesus.) Does anybody think they could do one of these or something else you heard today? (Let kids respond.) Me too (Share a personal story of a friend you want to share Jesus with and how you plan to do it) Let s talk to him together (lead kids in praying something like): Dear God, thank you for inviting each of us to be part of your family and allowing us to know you. We want others to know you too and to experience your love. Please give us the opportunity to share you this week. Amen. VERSE (1 min.) Now, before we worship, let s learn our verse for this month. It s a good one and if you re feeling at all nervous to share Jesus with a friend, this should give you the courage you need. SLIDE: Philippians 4:13: For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Let s say that together a couple times (lead kids in repeating it). WORSHIP (6 min.) Well done Now let s worship our rescuer and tell him we love him and remember his love for us. Everybody stand up and let s sing and dance. Music Video: Dance Shout and Sing Music Video: Jesus Loves Me *Dismiss kids to small groups
