Page 2 Our Lady of Peace September 28, 2014 Announcements FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Tomorrow, the Church will celebrate the feast of Saints Michael, Raphael and Gabriel, archangels. So let us take this as an invitation, to think of the provident concern with which God cares for every human person. They are called archangels because of their important roles in God s plan. St. Michael, whose name means one who is like God, led the army of angels who cast Satan and the rebellious angels into hell; at the end of time, he will wield the sword of justice to separate the righteous from the evil (cf. Rv. 12:7-0). St. Gabriel, whose name means strength of God, announced to Mary that she had been chosen as the Mother of the Savior (cf. Lk. 1:26-38). St. Raphael, whose name means remedy of God, cured the blind man Tobit (cf. Tb. 5). The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that, [T]he existence of the spiritual, noncorporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls angels is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition. The name angel means servant or messenger of God. The Hebrew malak, used in the Old Testament, signifies more precisely delegate or ambassador. In a general audience of the year 1986, St. John Paul II explained that The angels, spiritual creatures, have a function of mediation and of ministry in the relationships between God and man. The Letter to the Hebrews says that Christ has been given a name, and therefore a ministry of mediation, far superior to that of the angels (cf. Heb 1:4). Angels are pure, created spirits that existed before the first man (Col 1:15-16). They are subject to Christ (1 Pt 3:21-22). They enjoy the constant presence of God (Lk 1:18-19). They are numerous beyond human calculation, and so they are described as thousands upon thousands, or myriads, since Hebrew has no word for millions. (Heb 12:22-23). They have intellect and will, and are immortal. St. Thomas (Summa Theologica I: 108), divides the angels into three hierarchies each of which contains three orders. Their proximity to the Supreme Being serves as the basis of this division. In the first hierarchy he places the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones; in the second, the Dominations, Virtues, and Powers; in the third, the Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. It is interesting to notice how the Liturgy of the Church helps us to become ever more aware of the role of the angels in our lives. Let it suffice here to record the act with which the Church, every day and every hour, in all the world, before beginning the Eucharistic Prayer in the center of the Mass, says: we join with all of the angels and saints to sing the hymn of praise, Holy, holy, holy uniting herself thus to those first adorers of God, in the worship and the loving knowledge of the unspeakable mystery of His holiness. Also at Mass, in Eucharistic Prayer I, the priest prays, Almighty God, we pray that your angel may take this sacrifice to your altar in heaven. In the Final Commendation of the Funeral Liturgy, the priest prays, May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem. We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine! Therefore the Church confesses her faith in the guardian angels, venerating them in the liturgy with an appropriate feast (Oct. 2nd) and recommending recourse to their protection by frequent prayer, as in the invocation Angel of God. This prayer seems to draw on the treasure of the beautiful words of St. Basil: Every one of the faithful has beside him an angel as tutor and pastor, to lead him to life (cf. St. Basil, Adv. Eunonium, III, 1; cf. also St. Thomas, Summa Theol. I, q.11, a.3). I commend you all to the Queen of Angels, our Blessed Mother, may she who was attentive to the message delivered by the Archangel Gabriel, help us also to be heedful and docile to the Word of God. God bless you all! Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE On Sun. Oct. 5 @ 12:00 noon Mass followed by procession with flags from different countries.

The Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON SACRED MUSIC Q: What is Sacred Music A: Sacred music is "that which, being created for the celebration of divine worship, is endowed with a certain holy sincerity of form," according to the Sacred Congregation of Rites in its Instruction on Music and the Liturgy, Musicam Sacram (1967, 4). As defined by the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium (1963), sacred music surpasses merely religious music when it is joined to the liturgical rite to become "a necessary and integral part of the solemn liturgy," whose purpose is "the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful" ( 112). "As a manifestation of the human spirit," said John Paul II in 1989, "music performs a function which is noble, unique, and irreplaceable. When it is truly beautiful and inspired, it speaks to us more than all the other arts of goodness, virtue, peace, of matters holy and divine. Not for nothing has it always been, and will it always be, an essential part of the liturgy."
