Saint Paul s Episcopal Church Waco, Texas Tidings October 27, 2013 The 9:00 Liturgy: the Work of the People While I was on sabbatical I spent a good bit of time thinking about our worship at St. Paul s. Worship, at its core, is the primary job description of the people of God. First and foremost, we are called to offer our praise and thanksgiving to God. The act of worship, which we call Liturgy, is the way we do this important act of adoration to God, thus, the Work of the People. I have grown particularly interested in how we do that work at the 9:00 service. How can we build on the amazing commitment of our 9:00 musicians, the lay readers, clergy and people to make this liturgy an even more worshipful and joyfilled service? Also, is there some way we can engage the children in a meaningful way to help them participate in this honorable work? With this in mind, we are going to try a few new things beginning in November. First, we will expand the musical offerings to include, from time to time, some contemporary and popular music. Fear not! This music will be chosen carefully in keeping with Anglican theology, but by adding some songs with which worshippers are familiar and that are musically accessible, perhaps it will encourage the congregation to sing. Also, we will begin teaching a very simple way to sing the Psalm, expanding the role of music in our worship. Secondly, on the second Sunday of each month, beginning in November, we will encourage the children to remain in the liturgy the entire time. I have no intention of removing children s chapel from our offerings. The ministry Lisa St. Romain leads during that time is vital to the spiritual development of our children. However, by keeping the children in liturgy once a month we will be able to give them a much more hands on experience of liturgy as they grow in their understanding of the Work of the People. For this to work, we will need the parents to make a few adjustments as well. On Sunday, November 10th and each Second Sunday following: 1. Parents with small children will be invited to move to the front pews of the church so their children can see what s going on. 2. Parents will be invited to open the Book of Common Prayer, the Hymnal and the order of worship as we use them and guide their children s fingers along the pages. 3. The preacher will preach from the step or transcept, preaching in a way that engages children and adults. He or she may invite the kids to come forward or not. The preacher is encouraged to use this as a teaching time, perhaps focusing on an object we use in worship. 4. The portable altar will be moved to the top of the step of the Chancel, just behind the entrance to the pews. 5. Communion will be distributed at two floor stations and one traveling team. By making these modest changes it is our intention to make the 9:00 service an even richer and more engaging worship experience. I want to encourage each of you to engage these changes openly and enthusiastically, especially with your children. I am sure as we do these things minor adjustments will be necessary. This will all be part of the process of our growth. I am also sure that as we do this we will all become more intentional about our worship, the primary Work of the People of God. Fr. Chuck
