Prayer Service Immaculate Conception, Bangall Remembrance and Going Forth July 31, 2015 6:30 PM

Leader: We give thanks to God for the nearly 100 years that Immaculate Conception Parish has served Bangall and the surrounding communities. While there is sadness in the merger with St. Joseph s, we can be grateful for all that our parish has meant to us. While the sacraments will no longer be celebrated in this building on a regular basis, we will continue to hear God s Word and share in the Lord s Table because, as a people of faith, living stones that build up the body of Christ, we know that who we are in God s eyes and what we believe in cannot be limited by bricks and mortar and human structures. So let us enter this Evening Prayer in a spirit of gratitude. stand for lighting of the candle and remain standing for the hymn, Gathered as One. Take seats after the hymn. Antiphon The Lord of hosts is with us God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. Thus we do not fear, though earth be shaken And mountains quake to the depths of the sea, Though its waters rage and foam And mountains totter at its surging. Streams of the river gladden the city of God, The holy dwelling of the Most High. God is in its midst; it shall not be shaken; God will help it at break of day. Though nations rage and kingdoms totter, He utters his voice and the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; Our stronghold is the God of Jacob. Come and see the works of the Lord, Who has done fearsome deeds on earth; Who stops wars to the ends of the earth, Breaks the bow, splinters the spear, And burns the shields with fire; 2

Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, Exalted on the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; Our stronghold Is the God of Jacob. Antiphon The Lord of hosts is with us Reading Matthew 28: 16-20 A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew. The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Reflection Magnificat #849 in missalette Leader God, our Father, as our parish of Immaculate Conception Bangall has been chosen to merge, send your spirit of wisdom that we may continue to fulfill your will in a gentle and trusting manner with concern for past, present and future generations. With confidence we place our petitions before you and ask, Lord, hear our prayer. Like your chosen people in the desert, we feel empty, dry, and lost. Transform our pain and loss into hope and gentle peace in the knowledge of your care for us, let us pray to the Lord 3

Many parishioners have gone before us who have run the race and won the price of eternal life. May their memory call us to continue the journey, to persevere in building the kingdom, let us pray to the Lord For all the lay ministers, religious sisters, and priests who have served this parish, that God will crown their generosity with the gift of everlasting life, let us pray to the Lord... For the youth of this parish, that they may always take with them the strong faith and spiritual commitment that is their heritage, let us pray to the Lord That our journey in faith and grace may strengthen the bonds that unite us and God s church, keeping us true to our inheritance, joyful in daily life, and devoted in our mission to draw closer to the kingdom, let us pray to the Lord That our memories of the many blessings which we have received in this parish will stir us to respond generously to the call to share our faith with others, let us pray to the Lord Leader As we bid farewell to active worship sites in Bangall, let us recall the places and symbols of our rituals and sacraments As each place or item is projected on the screen The baptismal font Leader Let us remember the baptisms celebrated here (pause) We thank you and praise you for the life of faith given to all who have passed through the waters of new life at this font. Blessed be God forever! 4

The confessional Leader Let us remember the times when we have been forgiven, comforted, and consoled in the sacrament of God s lovingkindness... We thank you for the healing and reconciling love that has been given through this sacrament in this church. Blessed be God forever! The first station Leader Let us remember the generations of prayers and devotion that this sacred image has inspired We thank you for inspiring us here in true devotion to the way of Christ s cross. Blessed be God forever! The ambo Leader Let us remember the power of God s Word proclaimed here in scripture and in preaching We thank you and we praise you for your holy Word proclaimed here in faith and preached here in sincerity. May it echo always in our hearts. Blessed be God forever! The altar Leader Let us remember the times we have gathered for the sacred banquet; the Sundays on which we worshipped faithfully, the first communion celebrations, the feast days of saints and martyrs, the funerals held here in hope. Let us pray God of refuge, our home is in you. You are greater than any temple, church, or cathedral that can be built by human hands, yet in this place we have met your divine majesty. This church building has been a place of blessing for us. Protect us on our way. Lead us to new friends in another faith community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen! 5

Concluding Prayer Leader As we mark the end of our time as the Parish of Immaculate Conception Bangall, there are many memories we hold close to our hearts. To keep the memory of this parish alive, we will share with our new parish a few tokens of our history. These things represent what we bring to the merged parish of Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph s, which many of us will soon call our own. Reader 1 We take with us these books, Registers of the Sacraments of Initiation. They record the names of those who were reborn in Christ, confirmed in his Spirit, and fed at his table. May we be faithful to our Christian calling. Reader 2 We take with us this Register of Marriage. Here are the names of those who pledge their love as signs of Christ s covenant with his church. May the love of our families enrich our new parish and our world. Reader 3 We take with us the Register of our departed sisters and brothers. May we remember those who went before us and share with them the glory yet to come. Concluding remarks Fr. White Leader: Let us go in peace in the confidence of God s love. : Thanks be to God. As the candles are lighted from the Easter candle, sing Christ Be Our Light Once the candles are lit, go forth singing Take the Word of God With You 6

The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, as I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. -adapted from JRR Tolkien 8
