East St. Olaf Lutheran Church 6200 County Road 3 SW - Byron, MN Christ the King Holy Baptism Sunday, November 25,, 2018 Pastor Paul Thompson Organist: Pat Nelson INTRODUCTION Even after Israel had experienced the vagaries of kings, they still longed for a true king to set things right. He would have the king s title of Anointed One (Messiah); he would be the one like a human being (Son of Man) given dominion in Daniel s vision. Jesus is given these titles, even though he is nothing like an earthly king. His authority comes from the truth to which he bears witness, and those who recognize the truth voluntarily listen to him. We look forward to the day he is given dominion, knowing his victory will be the nonviolent victory of love. ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. GATHERING SONG Crown Him with Many Crowns (ELW 855) GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE (ELW p. 203) CANTICLE OF PRAISE (ELW p. 204) PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God, you anointed your beloved Son to be priest and sovereign forever. Grant that all the people of the earth, now divided by the power of sin, may be united by the glorious and gentle rule of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, 1 2

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON: 2 Samuel 23:1-7 The first lesson is from 2 nd Samuel, the 23 rd chapter. 1Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favorite of the Strong One of Israel: 2The spirit of the LORD speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. 3The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, 4is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. 5Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? 6But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; 7to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 132:1-12 [13-18] 1LORD, remember David, and all the hardships he endured; 2how he swore an oath to the LORD and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: 3 I will not come under the roof of my house, nor climb up into my bed; 4I will not allow my eyes to sleep, nor let my eyelids slumber; 5until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob. 6 The ark! We heard it was in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Ja ar. 7Let us go to God s dwelling-place; let us fall upon our knees before God s footstool. 8Arise, O LORD, into your resting-place, you and the ark of your strength. 9Let your priests be clothed with righteousness; let your faithful people sing with joy. 10For your servant David s sake, do not turn away the face of your anointed. 11The LORD has sworn an oath to David, and in truth, will not break it: A son, the fruit of your body, will I set upon your throne. 12If your children keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their children will sit upon your throne forevermore. 13For the LORD has chosen Zion, desiring Jerusalem for a habitation: 14 This shall be my resting place forever; here will I dwell, for I delight in Zion. 15I will surely bless the city s provisions, and satisfy the poor with bread. 16I will clothe the priests with salvation, and the faithful in Zion will rejoice and sing. 17There will I make the horn of David flourish; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed. 18As for his enemies, I will clothe them with shame; but as for him, his crown will shine. SECOND LESSON: Revelation 1:4b-8 The Second Lesson is from the 1 st chapter of Revelation. 4bGrace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. 3 4

To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. 7Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. 8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (ELW p. 205) GOSPEL: John 18:33-37 The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. 33Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? 35 Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. 37 Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Borning Cry (ELW 732) PRESENTATION In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the 5 communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. I present Leonardo Odin Bellrichard for baptism. Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Leonardo Odin baptized into Christ? Response: I do. As you bring your child to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with him among God's faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that your child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your child grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: I do. Sponsors, do you promise to nurture this child in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help them live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Response: I do. People of God, do you promise to support Leonardo Odin and pray for him in his new life in Christ? We do. PROFESSION OF FAITH I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: I renounce them. Do you believe in God the Father? 6

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. *Or, he descended into hell, another translation of this text in widespread use. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. BAPTISM Leonardo Odin, I baptize you in the name of the Father,* and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 7 You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Leonardo Odin with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Leonardo Odin, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. WELCOME Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each petition of the prayer will end: Lord in your mercy, Please respond with: Hear our prayer. [At ending: ] OFFERING OFFERTORY SONG Create in Me (ELW 186) OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. 8

LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. BLESSING SENDING SONG Lift High the Cross (ELW 660) DISMISSAL Copyright 2018 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved.
