November 18, 2018 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Thirty-Third Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family, Matthew 6:33 I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Do any of you remember Y2K?! It seems hard to believe that it s been nearly nineteen years since all of the worry and concern over what was going to happen with the coming of the year 2000 and the beginning of the new millennium. Because of the way computer programs were designed early on, there was concern that some date-related processing would operate incorrectly for dates and times on and after January 1, 2000. There were ominous predictions of widespread computer meltdowns. Power plants were going to fail, and essential supplies would be cut short. Think back did any of you stock up on water back then? It seemed that everyone you talked to wondered just what was going to happen at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2000? Well, as we know, nothing bad happened. Computers still worked. Homes still had electricity, and everyone continued going about their daily lives. But the levels of fear and apprehension were palpable. The idea that everything was going to change with this new date that there would be a major catastrophe all over the world certainly seemed as if the end was near. People have always wondered about the end of the world. What s it going to be like? When will it occur? Our imaginations can go wild as we watch some of the many movies that have been made about it. The scriptures for today add to that wondering. Our readings from both the Book of Daniel and the Gospel according to Mark give pretty specific images about the end times. Actually, we get these themes every year at this time as the Church approaches the end of the liturgical year. Next Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, when we acknowledge that, in the end whenever and however that will occur God will have the last word. At that time, all of creation will be subject to Jesus Christ, the Lord of heaven and earth. As we listen to these scriptures, let us be less concerned about when this will occur and focus more on how well prepared we are for our own last days. ************************************************************************************ On behalf of Fr. Richard and the entire staff, I extend my prayers and blessing for all of you as you celebrate Thanksgiving Day this week. In the midst of all of the preparations and festivities, please take some time and give considerable thought to the many blessings in your life. Of course, the premier way of giving thanks is the Celebration of the Eucharist the Mass. The word Eucharist literally means Thanksgiving. Come to Mass to offer thanks to God. Listen to Christ speak to us in the scriptures, and then partake in the gift of Christ himself in the consecrated bread and wine. No other celebration on this day, or any day, comes close to the thanks and praise we give God in the Mass. Our Thanksgiving holiday Mass actually will be celebrated on the night before, Wednesday, November 21, at 7:00. Come with gratitude and praise. Next weekend we celebrate the last Sunday of the liturgical year with the Solemnity of Christ the King. In this, we rejoice that, in the end, all things will culminate in Christ. As we approach this feast, let us reflect on how our life in Christ began at our Baptism and how we can continue to live it out every day. God bless you, always, and in all ways. Father Ed

Austin, Texas -1389 Shirley@svdpparish.org Gratefully Giving: We are a Stewardship Parish And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. Mark 13:26 We will all have that day when we are standing before God and our life is played out like a movie. When this happens and God asks each of us, What have you done with the gifts that I have given you? How will you respond? The Society of St. Vincent de Paul wishes to thank our parishioners for their continued financial support. On Saturday, November 17th, Vincentians delivered 25 Turkey Baskets to families. Additionally, seventy-one children received $25 Wal-Mart Christmas gift cards. The Society also wishes to thank James Longoria and the Youth group for helping collect food for the Turkey Baskets. May the Lord bless you and be gracious to you for your generosity. HUNGER AWARENESS MINISTRY ISTRY The Hunger Awareness Ministry would like to extend heartfelt thanks for all of the food donations our generous parishioners make each week. Each year the success of this appeal depends on you. Again, this year, you have done a wonderful thing your gifts have helped to assure that the Catholic Services Appeal will be able to continue its mission of fostering the Kingdom of God here in Central Texas. CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING CORNER Considering the economic injustice experienced by the impoverished and the violence unfolding throughout the world, may our prayerful hope continue to be, as St. John Paul II implored on the centenary of Rerum Novarum, that people learn to fight for justice without violence, renouncing class struggle in their internal disputes, and war in international ones (Centesimus Annus, 23). #IGIVECATHOLIC IS NOVEMBER 27 #igivecatholic is an online giving day for the Catholic community. It is a call to share of our blessings with the church and those the church helps and supports in our communities. To celebrate our unique Catholic heritage #igivecatholic is a giving day created to rally the Catholic community on Giving Tuesday, Nov. 27 a global day of giving. Secure, tax-deductible donations to eligible Catholic parishes, schools, ministries, and not-for-profit organizations located in the participating arch/dioceses will be accepted at www.igivecatholic.org during a 24-hour period.
