November 24, 2013 YOU CAN HELP POPE FRANCIS Several weeks ago a lady from another parish, who visits St. Aidan s frequently, called and inquired about how she could participate in the consultation requested by Pope Francis. This consultation of clergy and faithful is about The Special Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization. As you may know, the Holy Father is planning an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops next October and he is asking for the opinion of Catholics in preparation for this important event in the life of the Catholic Church. You and I both know that the family is really the domestic church and that not only here, but all over the world, families are facing new problems and challenges. This is a very new time and the Church is anxious to support and encourage families in changed situations. In the preparatory document many of these challenges are named. Some of these have application in our own situation and others are of concern in different parts of the world. I thought that you might be interested in some of the challenges that are mentioned in the preparatory document. Among them are: cohabitation, same sex marriages, mixed or inter-religious marriages, the single parent family and the influence of the media on our idea of marriage. There is, of course, the ever present question of how the Church deals with the divorced and remarried. (That is why I so often write about marriage and why I make every effort to make the annulment process available to all our parishioners irrespective of their ability to meet any expenses that are involved.) The Catholic Church is a loving mother and wishes to take care of all of her children no matter what their circumstances. Life today is very complicated and at times confusing and, unfortunately, the ideal is not always realized. Pope Francis understands that the Church must have a deep understanding and appreciation of the life of the family as that life is lived today. That is one of the reasons for this request of input from our Holy Father.

The Preparatory Document and the questions may be found on our Diocesan Web site www.drvc.org and http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/synod/documents/ rc_synod_doc_20131105_iii-assemblea-sinodo-vescovi_en.html. The Diocese has given us the following instructions on how to respond to any or all of the questions: 1. Only E-mail responses sent to synodofbishops@drvc.org will be accepted. 2. Only E-mail responses that include the respondent s name and parish will be accepted. 3. Faxes or mailed printed documents will NOT be accepted. 4. The questions to address upon reflection are those found in the Preparatory Document appear below and may be found at: http://www.vatican.va/ roman_curia/synod/documents/rc_synod_doc_20131105_iii-assemblea-sinodovescovi_en.html 5. When responding, specific reference to the question number must be given. So, for instance, if one is responding to question 3(b) in the Preparatory Document, that fact should be clearly indicated in the response. All responses must be received by December 2, 2013. THE KNIGHT S CORNER (Providing information from the Knights of Columbus) POPE ADDRESSES KNIGHTS In a recent address (10 Oct. 2013) to the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus, Pope Francis said, I wish to express my gratitude for the unfailing support in which your Order has always given to the works of the Holy See. This support finds particular expression in the Vicarius Christi Fund, which is an eloquent sign of your solidarity with the Successor of Peter in his concern for the universal Church, but it is also seen in the daily prayers, sacrifices and apostolic works of so many Knights in their local Councils, their parishes and their communities. May prayer, witness to the faith and concern for our brothers and sisters in need always be the three pillars supporting your work both individually and corporately. In fidelity to the vision of the Venerable Michael J. McGivney, may you continue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gospel and a force for the spiritual renewal of society. As the present Year of Faith draws to a close, I commend all of you in a special way to the intercession of Saint Joseph, the protector of the Holy Father of Nazareth, who is an admirable model of those manly virtues of quiet strength, integrity and fidelity which the Knights of Columbus are committed in preserving, cultivating and passing on to future generations of Catholic men. LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA I would like to reflect on the upcoming national holiday of Thanksgiving which we celebrate the last Thursday in November. A day full of traditions, turkey and cranberry sauce, parades, games.! All celebrated around the table with our family, all wonderful and important, how we designate a day out of the year to give thanks! There is a danger although in identifying that thanks is due on only this day, but not others. Gratitude is important, and as people of Faith, giving thanks to God, is special. Thanksgiving is not just a Day, it is a Season!! Let s not overlook the heart of thanksgiving, for many of us the actual holiday is so full of activities that we have little time to reflect on the actual need of saying thanks, both to God from whom we receive all blessings, and to those that bring God s blessings to our lives. Say Thank You to the people in our lives who deserve to hear it from us. Drop someone a note, make a short phone call, it will enrich your life as well as the lives of those who receive it. A small gesture can make a big difference in the life of a person. In your celebration, Don t Miss Jesus!!! Take time to be with Him, go to Mass, receive Him in Holy Communion. The time of intimacy that comes from falling at His feet in gratitude, indeed that will open our hearts to know Jesus more truly and personally. The Lord deserves all our thanks. May our thanks lead us into praise, and enjoy His presence, as He enjoys yours!!! The new CDs we have in our kiosks this week are brought back per your request. Our Lady of Good Success by Matthew Arnold, The Making of a Jewish Nun by Mother Miriam and Evangelizing Catholics by Dr. Scot Hahn. I trust you enjoy them and pass them around. There are many souls who need to listen to them. Thank you for your continued help with this ministry. Your donation helps us to bring new titles every week. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!! MANY, MANY, THANKS!!! PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY Love caritas is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God, Eternal Love and Absolute Truth. Encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, June 29, 2009. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY BAGS OF CLOTHING ON THE BACK STEPS OF THE PARISH SO- CIAL MINISTRY OFFICE! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE ITEMS, PLEASE CONTACT THE PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY OFFICE! FOOD PANTRY: We are trying something new with our food pantry! Each week we will highlight one or two items that the pantry is either very low or out of since many people have inquired as to what is needed. The items for the week are: mayonnaise and ketchup. We are also in need of metro cards which we use for our families throughout the year. SHARING OUR TREASURES: Sharing Our Treasures has become a wonderful charitable tradition here at Saint Aidan s. We begin this program this weekend as we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. This feast reminds us that Christ has blessed us with many gifts and treasures and we wish to share our wealth with others less fortunate. This year we have placed ornaments on our Christmas tree located in the Vestibule with requests for gifts for those in need. Please choose an ornament and kindly return the ornament along with your gift to the parish social ministry office or the rectory. Please return by December 13th. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY GIFTS OR GIFT CARDS IN CHURCH! There are many families, senior citizens and singles who are members of our own parish who have benefitted from the generosity of the many individuals who graciously provided gifts this year. In addition we provided gifts to our Covenant Parish - St. John the Baptist, New Ground, Veteran Groups, Nassau University Hospital Pediatrics and other parishes and charitable organizations. Your love and kindness will make a big difference in the life of another this Christmas Season. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer shawls or lap blankets for our sick and homebound parishioners. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next meeting will take place on Monday, November 25 th. If you or someone you know would like to have one of these shawls or blankets, please contact our office. If you have any questions, please call Parish Social Ministry (516) 746-6585 x9410.
