March 5, 2017 Page Three LENTEN SPIRITUAL EXERCISES WEEK 2 March 11th & 12th Say grace before each meal even when you are eating in public. Read the scriptures before coming to Sunday Mass and the readings in the little black book. Scripture Readings March 11th & 12th First Reading Genesis 12:1-4 Psalm Psalm 33 Second Reading 2 Timothy 1:8-10 Gospel Matthew 17:1-9 Lectio Divina for Lent In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Bestow on us, we pray, O Lord, a spirit of always pondering on what is right and of hastening to carry it out, and, since without you we cannot exist, may we be enabled to live according to your will. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reading Read the following Scripture two or three times. Matthew 4:1-11 At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread. He said in reply, It is written: One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone. Jesus answered him, Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test. Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me. At this, Jesus said to him, Get away, Satan! It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve. Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him. PRAYER PARTNERS DURING LENT Remember to pray for your prayer partner this week. During the Lenten season, Stations of the Cross will be recited on Friday afternoons at 1:00 PM in Church.

LOVE GROWS HERE SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School MAKE YOUR LENTEN JOURNEY MEANINGFUL The theme of our Lenten season is What Can I Give Back to the Lord for All That He Has Given to Me? Every week we will gather in church to focus on Jesus journey to Calvary. As part of our weekly Lenten Prayer Services, the 7 th grade students will lead us in our own rendition of the Living Stations. These life-like Stations will give meaning to the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us. Continuing along this theme, our students will focus on reflecting on their daily actions and how these actions hurt or heal relationships and move us further away from Christ Our Savior. Our students will acknowledge how they can be more appreciative to others for all that they been given. If you are interested in attending any of our Lenten Prayer Services, please contact the school office at 708-333-8173 and ask for the afternoon Lenten Prayer Service times since they vary each week. SCHOLARSHIP GALA APRIL 28 Our Scholarship Gala will take place on Friday, April 28. Our Gala is the biggest fundraiser of the year. We will have our traditional dinner dance but this year we have decided to present a Talent Showcase as our focus theme. We want to recognize the unbelievable amount of local outstanding talent within our students so we want to showcase their amazing gifts and abilities. What a treat that will be! You do not want to miss out on this evening. Tickets will soon be on sale. ALL ARE WEL- COME! We are seeking donations for our raffle gift baskets. Donated items/gift cards will be added to these basket themes: gardening, Italian cooking, Chicago Black Hawks, Bulls, White Sox, Cubs, Bears, school supplies, women, men, children, my kind of town Chicago, Christmas, fall harvest, movie night or picnic. If you would like to donate a related item, please drop it off at the school office or contact me at 708-333-8173 Ext. 24. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU A GREAT big thank you to the Women s Guild of Our Lady of Knock Parish and to John and Betty Bush, parishioners of Our Lady of Knock, for their very generous recent donations to Christ Our Savior Catholic School. God bless you for your kindness to our students! In Christ s Love, Karen Brodzik Principal

March 5, 2017 Page Five TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- The man and the woman ate the fruit of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7). Psalm -- Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51). Second Reading -- Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19). Gospel -- Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Ps 19:8-10, 15; Mt 25:31-46 Tuesday: Is 55:10-11; Ps 34:4-7, 16-19; Mt 6:7-15 Wednesday: Jon 3:1-10; Ps 51:3-4, 12-13, 18-19; Lk 11:29-32 Thursday: Est C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Ps 138:1-3, 7c-8; Mt 7:7-12 Friday: Ez 18:21-28; Ps 130:1-8; Mt 5:20-26 Saturday: Dt 26:16-19; Ps 119:1-2, 4-5, 7-8; Mt 5:43-48 Sunday: Gn 12:1-4a; Ps 33:4-5, 18-20, 22; 2 Tm 1:8b-10; Mt 17:1-9 First Sunday of Lent Today is the first Sunday of Lent, the season of repentance, of turning back to the Lord s plan for us, of preparing for or recalling our baptismal commitment. We can ask God for the grace to see our lives afresh: Who am I, Lord, and how can I praise, love, and serve you best? Today s readings help us focus. Genesis reminds us of our origin: God created us out of clay, breathing life into us. Without God, we are nothing. Saint Paul s Letter to the Romans consoles us. Although we have a tendency to ignore God, Jesus sacrifice restores us as God s children. The Gospel of Matthew astonishes us by showing how God chose to become like us, even allowing the devil to tempt him with the very sins that we battle. Our gracious God knows exactly what our lives are like. God wants to accompany us and show us how to be happy forever. THE ONE AND ONLY LENT No matter how many Lenten seasons we ve experienced, we can embark on this year s journey as if it is the only Lent we will ever have. We can pray, fast, and offer sacrifices in specific, generous ways. Jesus is our model. Jesus spared nothing of himself when he went into the desert for forty days and forty nights. He didn t bring along computer games to divert himself or a stockpile of snacks for emergencies. No, Jesus was all in. The Gospel tells us that the devil waited till after the forty days of sacrifice to ambush Jesus. Just when our Lord was at his weakest, frail with hunger, the devil came to tempt him. Relying on the Word of God, Jesus resisted all temptations. Then, and only then, did angels come to minister to Jesus. If we imitate Jesus and go all in this Lent, we can expect to suffer. We can also depend upon God to send help just exactly when we need it. WE RE WORTH IT When we commit ourselves to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving this Lent, we will encounter obstacles. The devil hates to see us grow closer to God. Even if our Lenten progress is microscopic, the devil wants to thwart us. We are God s beloved children, so we are valuable. We are worth the devil s time. Expect difficulty. Expect obstacles. Expect temptation. Above all, expect God s unfailing help. Staying close to God s Word will strengthen us, as it strengthened Jesus in the desert. Today s Gospel shows us that Jesus desires to accompany us, especially in our weakest and most difficult moments. Whatever temptations we face, Jesus understands. Whatever sacrifices we make, Jesus offers them with us. Whatever goodness we show to encourage others, our Lord rejoices with all the angels and saints. Let us approach this Lent as if it is the only Lent we will ever have. God wants to do great things for us in this holy season. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc
