FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR Dear friends in Christ, In the coming weeks we will be beginning the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign in our parish. This is a campaign to support the retirement needs of the many dedicated priests and religious sisters who have given their lives in the service of God and all of us. Jesus asks us to follow Him, to serve the Lord and to share His gifts, the blessings He has given us with others. Our gifts to the campaign will take care of a retired priest, support a sister, and help our parish continue the mission of Christ. The gifts we give in support of these goals with the financial resources we have been blessed with will have a great impact and will be a blessing to us and to God. The Archdiocese of Seattle is fortunate to have thousands of Catholic families who actively participate in their faith life. We have an obligation to make our Archdiocese, and our world, better for those who follow us. And together, by participating in the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign, we can say thank you for the ministry of so many good priests and sisters who have ministered to us. Each parish can designate 15% of what is raised in pursuit of a project or ministry that is in pursuit of the service of Christ. At St. Jude, with our passion to serve the homeless, we will be supporting the New Bethlehem Project, an effort to build a permanent 24/7 emergency shelter for families on the Eastside. I invite you to participate in this effort by first of all praying for the success of the campaign, by coming to the events will be having in the next couple of months, and by making a pledge when the time comes. Working together, there is so much we can accomplish and so much we can do in the name of the Lord. I pray that this holiday weekend will be a time of rest and renewal for you and your families. May God surround you with His peace and His love. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Johnson SUNDAY NIGHT MASS is back starting Sunday, September 9th at 5:30pm Monday, September 3rd is Labor Day. There will NOT be Mass or Word & Communion The Office will be Closed! -2-

SOCIAL JUSTICE FREE AND RESPONSIBLE God s law demands careful observation and it is the key to life on earth. The Pharisees misunderstood what the law was all about. They fixate on keeping human traditions; Jesus frees people from rigid adherence to human traditions and redirects them to authentic living of the commandments. It is easier to clean the pots and pans than to clean one s heart. The Pharisees are concerned with washing hands; Jesus is concerned about washing feet! Law is not given to be kept for its own sake; law is given for the good of the people. Any traditions to which we adhere must be for the sake of the purpose of God s commandments, to live in right relationship with God and each other. What traditions do we blindly cling to? Perhaps it is enough just to go to Mass on Sunday; since that is what Catholics do. Or perhaps we cling to rote prayers that we learned as a child rather than stretch our relationship with God to find new prayer expressions. We need to look at the way we live, and this will tell us whether we have hearts truly turned toward God in a healthy and life-giving relationship. Purity of heart is expressed in righteous living self-giving for the sake of others that deepens our relationships. PARISH LIFE CELEBRATION Sunday, September 16th 12:00 noon till 2:30 p.m. Enjoy: Pulled Pork Sandwiches Hot Dogs and Hamburgers Beer and Wine Garden Cotton Candy and Root Beer Floats Children s Games, Paint Spin Art Balloon Artist, Air Brush Artist, Bingo Medallion Hunt prize $100 Raffle: 49 TLC Roku Smart TV 4 tickets for Wings Over Washington and 4 tickets for Seattle Great Wheel, chocolate and wine basket, golf basket, Mom s spa basket, and much more. LABOR DAY PRAYER God of Creation, help us celebrate Labor Day By recalling the Church s teaching on work and Workers rights, as well as by praying for all workers and those seeking work We celebrate the Church s long history of defending Workers right and the right to unions. We acknowledge that we ae all called to work As co-creators of the Kingdom of God, As St. John Paul II has instructed us, And as builders of the common good. We affirm that work is central To the development of the human person And enables each person to contribute to the common good. We recognize that all workers have dignity and that all workers must be treated with respect. We call for a just minimum wage so that all families might have decent living conditions. We support the calls for workers health and safety in all working environments. We pray for those currently working And we pray for those who are unemployed and seeking work. Give us all the gift of good work and the satisfaction of jobs well done. God of Creation, hear our prayer. Amen. Around the Archdiocese Everyone Will Be Asked to Consider a Sacrificial Gift The Called to Serve as Christ campaign is coming, and we hope to reach out to every person in the Archdiocese of Seattle, as we know each person can help accomplish so much. When asked to do something big, whether a project or donation, it is often easiest to take the biggest piece and divide it into smaller parts. Making your gift into a pledge can help maximize your ability to support the worthy goals of the Called to Serve as Christ campaign. Breaking down payments into annual, semi-annual, quarterly or even monthly payments can help you budget your gift. If a family of four is asked to consider a gift of $3,600 to the campaign, it may seem like too much to do at one time. If the family divides it annually, it may seem more manageable at $1,200 over three years. But, even more manageable, if the family chooses to break it down even further, to monthly, it would come out to $100 per month over three years, or about the amount the family might spend eating out at a restaurant during the month. Each family will need to decide on their own what is appropriate and meaningful for their specific situation. Soon, Archbishop Sartain will ask each us to consider a gift in the hopes that all of us pledge to support the campaign s important goals in some way. He will ask us to ask ourselves: What can we sacrifice for the next three years for these goals? Tradition recounts that Mother Mary appeared 3 times with the Infant Jesus in this small hamlet around the end of the 16th or in the early 17 th.
