SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT A Loving Rebuke February 24 & 25, 2018 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER When it comes to human love, it s fair to say that it comes in different degrees. For instance, even with just a little love for someone, you might be willing to help carry some groceries or get their mail while they re out of town. But if you have a greater love for someone, you might be open to caring for them when they re sick or helping them move into a new home. The greatest demonstration of love, however, is to lay down your life for someone else. There s no greater sacrifice one can make for another. And yet, that s exactly what Jesus did for us, even though so often we are unloving and unlovable people. But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). WELCOME "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit." I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her. EPISTLE Romans 5:1 11 ( We were reconciled to God. ) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we 3 were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Let us pray to God, crying out for His mercy, confident that our Father hears our prayers because the Son of Man suffered, died and was raised for us. Our Father in heaven, continue to establish and uphold your saving covenant with us as you did with Abraham, that we who surely deserve nothing from you may rely on you for everything. While we were still your enemies, at the right time you gave your Son to die for us. Grant us repentant hearts and faith that rejoices that His death has reconciled us to you. 5 6 Our Father in heaven, we give you thanks for the gift of life and the treasure of new life in Christ. We rejoice with the Strysick family as they celebrate Stefanie s birthday and the Gorney family as Mason Iward is baptized into Christ. Grant us all to treasure the gift of life and to daily grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, sharing his love with one another. Our Father in heaven, look with your kindness upon all who hold public office in our land. Fill them with your wisdom, give them both courage and compassion, and make them a blessing. Almighty God, bless and be with women who carry unborn children in their wombs and comfort and encourage couples who want children and are yet to conceive. Bless us all to treasure the gift of life. Bless our Elizabeth ministry as they serve women and support and encourage them in every station in life. Our Father in heaven, be with those who pass through difficult times and know sickness or heartache, loneliness or despair including Dorothy, Joyce, Sue, Janet, Donna, Dolores, Pat, Cliff, Jerry, Dee, Manley, Debbie, Pat, Charles, Ruth, Shirley, Gladys, Herb, Matthew, Russ, Arlene, Dorothy, John, Arlene, LuEva, Jean, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan, Helen, Leonard and Sarah. Heal each one as you know best. Provide for those who lack money, home or the necessities of life. In every time of testing, teach us all to hold tightly to you in faith, that in the end we may know the comfort of your love. Our Father in heaven, you know the many temptations with which the world would snare us and draw us away from trust in you. Set our minds not on the things of man but on the things of God. Grant each of us a faith that confesses with joy that Jesus is the Christ. Also give us faith to daily deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Jesus. Pour out your Spirit on those who proclaim Jesus here and throughout the world: especially Pastors Stanton and Bender, Pastor Chuck Ferry and family, and Rachel Meyer. Bring those who do not know or trust in Jesus to believe and rejoice in our Savior and his salvation.

Our Father in heaven, prepare the hearts of those who receive Christ s body and blood this day. As we receive the very sacrifice made for us, grant us a peace that rejoices even in sufferings. By your gracious working, let suffering produce endurance in us, let endurance produce character, and let character produce the hope that is never ashamed because you have poured your love into our hearts. Our Father in heaven, your Son promises deliverance from evil. Receive our thanks for the victory over death and the grave that He won for us. Bring us with all your saints to celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His Kingdom which has no end. Into your hands, Father, we place ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
