The Year of Matthew Next week we launch The Year of Matthew! During the Epiphany Season (January and February), we will look at our Lord s Sermon on the Mount, with an emphasis on the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1 12. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on March 6, when we revisit Christ s Passion, death and resurrection by carefully reading Matthew 21 28. Matthew also has much to say about discipleship. Therefore, our series during the Easter season is called Developing Passionate Disciples of Jesus. After taking a hiatus in the summer to study Holy Communion and God s Attributes, our fall series is called Parables: Hidden Truth in Plain Sight. We will look at thirteen of these wonderful literary vignettes. We begin, though, with an Advent/Christmas emphasis on Matthew 1:1 26 titled, Who is Jesus? Here is the lineup: November 24/25: Jesus is the Son of David December 1/2: December 8/9: Jesus is the Son of Abraham Jesus is the Son of Solomon December 15/16: Jesus is the Son of Uzziah December 22/23: Jesus is the Son of Mary December 24: Jesus is the Son of Sinners Matthew reading guides are available at the Information Center in the lobby. 1
Theme of the Day: This weekend we demonstrate our financial generosity through pledging a portion of our income for St. Michael in 2019. Zacchaeus will help us as he shows money s generous side. PRESERVICE MUSIC TWENTY-SIXTH WEEKEND AFTER PENTECOST November 18, 2018 INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP (From selected verses in 1 Timothy 6) P: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Godliness with contentment is great gain. C: For we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain that we can take nothing out. P: But if we have food and clothing, we will be content. C: People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap. P: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. C: Some people, eager for money P: Have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. C: Command those who are rich in this present world P: Not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth. C: Command them to be generous and willing to share. P: In this way we will lay up treasure for ourselves as a firm foundation for the coming age. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Jesus tells us in today s Gospel lesson, The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost. (Luke 19:10) O God, we confess that C: We can be lost like Zacchaeus. P: Lost in a world of greed, stockpiling and hoarding. C: And so we confess to you, Lord P: Our discontent with your provision. C: We acknowledge before to you, Lord P: Our meager generosity. C: We lay bare to you, Lord P: Our plans to keep more and give less. C: We reveal to you, Lord P: Our unwillingness to trust your promises in Christ Jesus. All: Forgive us, dear Savior, and make us bold and faithful stewards of your gifts. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination P: As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I announce to you that your sins are forgiven through the cross of Jesus. His return is certain, his promises are sure, and his love is never-ending. All: Amen. HYMN From All That Dwell Below The Skies 816 8:00a (stanzas 2 3) 10:45a (stanza 3) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, you still come to seek and save lost people. Rescue us from our sin and point us to your cross. Then, being governed by your bountiful goodness, empower us to live joyfully and generously; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. All: Amen. By grace we are learning as year leads to year. We re called to be stewards, your caretakers here. Too often, O God, we abuse your good earth. We fail to remember its beauty and worth. We take from creation much more than we need, We threaten your mission through excess and greed. May we be good stewards of all that you give. Extending your Gospel wherever we live. May we be a church that renews and restores And lovingly cares for these gifts that are yours. COMMITTING OUR GIFTS FOR 2019 P: We pause, Father, in this moment of dedication to reflect on what we have let go, and on what we have kept back, what we have given in the past and what we plan to give in the future. we possess. Make us more faithful, more generous, and more cheerful givers. We also join in thankful praise today to you, Jesus, the Giver of all good things. THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 8:00a OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE The Lord s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but his true body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another (Matthew 26:26 28). Our Lord invites to his table those who have been baptized, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). Because those who eat and drink our Lord s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:28 30) and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. 5
