Thanksgiving Proclamation Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789. George Washington Christ Our King Our King behaves like a true knight who perseveres in battle until the enemies are defeated. Once he had eaten this food, with his scourged flesh he conquered our enemy the flesh. With true humility, he, God, stooped down to our humanity in suffering and shame, and conquered pride and worldly pleasure and prestige. And with his wisdom he conquered the malice of the devil. So with unarmed hand, nailed fast to the cross, he defeated the prince of the world, with the wood of the holy cross as his mount. This knight of ours came armed with the breast place of Mary s flesh, flesh that bore the blows to make up for our wickedness. The helmet on his head is the painful crown of thorns, driven right into his brain. The sword at his side is the wound in his side, revealing to us the secret of his heart; it is a sword with a point of light that ought to pierce our inmost heart with the force of love. The staff in his hand is there in mockery. And the gloves on his hands and the spurs on his feet are the scarlet wounds in the hands and feet of this gentle loving Word. What armed him? Love. What held him nailed firm and fast to the cross? Neither nails nor the cross, which were not capable of holding the God-Man, but the bond of love for the Father s honor and our salvation. Love for us was the stone that held him upright. Who is so vile-hearted as not to be roused from weak-heartedness to become courageous against any enemy at the sight of this knight and captain at the same time done to death and victorious? No one! This is why I told you to take Christ crucified as your focus. Dye your cloak in the blood of Christ crucified, and with this you will defeat the first enemies. For Christ has already defeated them for us and has made us free by rescuing us from perverse servitude to the devil. And if the devil should ever try to attach us, let s have recourse at once to the weapons and armor of God s Son. SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA (+1380), Doctor of the Church, was a Dominican, stigmatist, and papal counselor. 2

THE GRACES OF THE APOSTLE ANDREW Andrew was the first to become an Apostle. It was he who opened the gates of Christ s teaching. He was the first to gather the fruits cultivated by the prophets, and he surpassed the hopes of all by being the first to embrace the one awaited by all. Having recognized the prophet foretold by the prophets, Andrew led his brother to the one he had found. To Peter, who was still in ignorance, he revealed the treasure: We have found the Messiah for whom we were longing. How many sleepless nights we spent beside the waters of the Jordan, and now we have found the one for whom we longed! Nor was Peter slow when he heard these words, for he was Andrew s brother. He listened attentively, then hastened with great eagerness. Taking Peter with him, Andrew brought his brother to the Lord, thus making him his fellow-disciple. This was Andrew s first achievement: he increased the number of the Apostles by bringing Peter to Christ, so that Christ might find in him the disciples leader. When later on Peter won approval, it was thanks to the seed sown by Andrew. But the commendation given to the one redounded to the other, for the virtues of each belonged to both, and each was proud of the other s merits. By promoting Peter, the Father endorsed from above the words Andrew used when he led Peter to Christ. Andrew had said: We have found the Messiah. The Father said, prompting Peter: Y ou are the Christ, the Son of the living God, almost forcing these words on Peter. Peter, he said, when you are questioned, use Andrew s words in reply. Show yourself very prompt in answering your master. Andrew did not lie to you when he said: We have found the Messiah. Turn the Hebrew words into Greek and cry out: Y ou are the Christ, the Son of the living God. SAINT BASIL THE GREAT (+379) is considered one of the four great doctors of the Church of the East. FINDING FAITH ON EARTH Would it not be impossible for us to avoid evangelizing if the Gospel is in our skin, our hands, our hearts, and our heads? We are indeed obliged to say why we are trying to be what we want to be, and trying not to be what we don t want to be. We are bound to preach because preaching is stating publicly something about Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, and no one can love him and be silent. Clearly we have to make our presence in the world a casual, fragile presence, a presence that is constantly ready for new departures, or which plunges down roots without knowing from day to day how long they will remain there. This happens because we know that God alone calls, gives faith, and saves, that none of us have any real authority. It happens because we are aware that from the time of John the Baptist s cry here is the Lamb of God! those who follow the lamb wherever he goes can be invited to follow him to that place where a person loses his house, his nets, his country. It happens because when we follow Christ, it is he who is already our house, our net, and our country. In that place where we follow him we glorify God by calling him God, but at the same time it is inevitable we call, in him, each person by his name. It is possible that no one will respond to this call...ever. We could get a mouthful of failure. But for a person who is doing a task for God, all his tasks may seem to fail, but the work that these tasks involved does not fail because it is God s work: there is no failure in work done for God. VENERABLE MADELEINE DELBRÊL (+1964) was a French laywoman, writer, and mystic devoted to caring for the poor and to evangelizing culture. 3

Juan A. Sosa, Presbítero 12

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to my medical fund thus far. I found out my initial campaign (not run by me) has been shut down for an unknown reason. The first campaign helped cover my household bills from missed work, as well as smaller hospital bills. This new campaign is set up in hopes of paying back some of the $90k+ I owe as of now. (This is only one of the two surgeries I have had so far.) It is very possible I will have to claim bankruptcy if I cannot make a good dent. That is a very frightening thought as a single parent. For those of you who either have donated already, or cannot afford to, please do not feel obligated. I ask for prayers for myself and for my family. It has been a very rough couple of months. The new link is www.gofundme.com/lishanson. You can also leave donations at the Parish Center. Every little bit helps, and has helped. God bless and thank you so much.
