Samuelson Luke 13: 31-35 is a useful lesson midway through the season of Lent. Some Pharisees come to Jesus and say get away from here for Herod wants to kill you. (v.31) Later Jesus says, Oh how I want to gather the children of Jerusalem as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you are not willing. (v.35) There seems to be a clash of wills. Our spiritual lives can often be experienced as a clash of wills. The season of Lent is a time where we ask ourselves, What do we want? Do we really want a closer relationship with God? Of course it sounds virtuous to claim that we do, but Lent may present us with an opportunity to be truly honest with ourselves. Lent may present an opportunity to access where we are and what we really want. Lenten prayers can be developed around such honesty. Maybe we can grow a little closer; maybe we can press in a little deeper. I have known God to be incredibly gentle in His relationship with me. Everyone grows at their own rate. Some spring up quickly and then plateau. Others are late bloomers. Consider this a time to locate yourself in the process, and a time to ask God to help you move into the next phase of your development. God s Peace, Pastor Gary

Samuelson We will kick off Read Across America Month by celebrating Dr. Seuss birthday. We will read his books, wear Cat in the Hat hats and eat a special snack. It s exciting to see the children able to identify authors by their distinctive styles as we compare different books. Since this month usually comes in like a lion, we will be learning about wind and objects that use wind power to work. We re hoping spring comes early so we can spend more time on the playground. We ll celebrate St. Patrick s Day by wearing green, looking for our hiding leprechauns and crating shamrocks. March also finds us getting ready for Easter and learning about Jesus love for us. We ll be making props to tell the story of Easter and other decorations to remember this special day. There will also be a special Easter activity that evening. Please do your best to make it to the meeting and don t forget to RSVP. The annual fund raiser for the Senior Youth Group will be held on April 8th and the theme this year is Tex Mex Night in the Hall. Look for additional details as the date approaches, but the band is already practicing and it s sure to be a great time. The evening starts at 6:30 and the entertainment will begin at 7:30. Put this date on your calendar or your refrigerator so you don t forget! You can also start looking in the attic for that sombrero you thought you d never use again because it will come in handy for this event! Don t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour! 15th Annual Spring Business Expo On Wednesday evening, April 13th, that Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual Business to Business Expo at St. Clements reception center. This event is designed to bring hundreds of people from the surrounding community together with more than 50 small businesses who are members of the chamber. Last year Cross of Glory was there to showcase our Nursery School and our Church Services. We met almost everyone who walked through the door and we were able to chat with everyone about the things we have to offer and promote our church family. This is pure evangelism at its best and we could use a few more people to man the table and work the event. The expo is from 6:00pm until 9:00pm but we need a few volunteers to help get everything set up about an hour before the doors are opened to the public. This is a free event to the public with a cash bar, light refreshments, door prizes, and entertainment. It s a great event to

Bartholomew Bishop Be Not Afraid 2016 New Jersey Synod Assembly The Twenty-Ninth Annual Synod Assembly of the New Jersey Synod will be held May 6-7 at Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch, NJ. We gather under the theme Be Not Afraid : a time to hear God s reassurance and comfort in the midst of difficult and fearful circumstances and a call to live joyful, unbounded lives. This follows a reoccurring theme in scripture, where God seeks to dwell with the people during challenging and mournful times. Whether that is finding the people in exile or the disciples after the resurrection, God s presence gathers with those struggling, and guides them to be people who share that presence with the entire world. We are looking forward to gathering as the Church together! See you there! Lead Poisoning Prevention New Jersey s Lead Hazard Control Assistance Fund has been impacted in recent years, and this has had devastating consequences. Elevated levels of highly toxic lead were found in more than 3100 young children in New Jersey last year. In 11 municipalities in New Jersey, the percentage of young children with elevated levels of lead is actually higher than in Flint, MI. To learn more and take actions, visit http:// www.hcdnnj.org/lead. Stop the Cuts Road Trip RESCHEDULED Due to a legislative schedule change, we have had to reschedule our bus trip from April 5 to July 13. So join us in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, from 12:30-3pm as we urge Congress to Stop the Cuts. On Tuesday, April 5th, 2016, advocates from New Jersey concerned about the needs for affordable homes will travel to Washington D.C. for a Congressional Reception on Capitol Hill. Low-income families, the homeless and those with special needs are hurting from the effect of budget cuts at the same time that the urgent need for housing still exists. Beginning Sunday, February 7, and extending through the season of Lent, congregations across the ELCA will join together in ELCA World Hunger s 40 Days of Giving to lift up this lifechanging work through new levels of

Detroit Servant Trip Summer of 2016 This summer we are sending a group of senior high youth and adults to Detroit for a new summer servant trip Detroit Hope 2016! The group will gather at Cross Roads on Sunday, August 21 and leave bright and early on that Monday for Detroit. Tues-Thurs are our work and play days; then we drive back to NJ on Friday. We ll be working and staying with Rippling House, a ministry in the heart of Detroit that works hard to care for the poor and those in need in their city. Some of our synod s group worked with them at the ELCA Youth Gathering there last summer. There is a trip flyer and interest list you can sign up for at www.njsynod.org/youth. There is an interest meeting during the Winter Youth Assembly. Spanish Language and Hispanic Ministry Intensive The Summer Language and Hispanic Ministry Intensive is a resource for Lutherans and those of other denominations who recognize the growing need for competency in the Spanish language and an understanding of Hispanic culture in light of the increasing Hispanic population in this country and in the church. The course focuses on study of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Learn more by visiting lsps.edu/archives/ event/spanish-language-and-hispanicministry-intensive.
