Nursery news NURSERY I-MORAH TAMI Purim has brought fun and excitement to the Nursery class. We listened to, and acted out, the story of Purim and can now identify all of the Purim characters. We learned about the mitzvah of Mishloach Manos and continued working on our Megillos. The minhagim of Purim were discussed this week. We sang all of our Purim songs and reviewed the new Hebrew vocabulary words which we learned in conjunction with the Purim story. מגילה ארמון מלך מלכה כתר רעשן מסכה אזני המן סעודת פורים For our Pre-Purim fun, we finger painted face masks, had our faces painted, baked delicious hamentaschen, participated in the mitzvah of Bringing Happiness to others, came into school in crazy hair/ hats and even in our pajamas one day. For Parashas Vayikra, we learned that in the time of the Bais Hamikdash, Bnei Yisroel brought korbanos. Now that we no longer have a Bais Hamikdash, our tefillos take the place of the korbanos. NURSERY II MORAH MIRIAM We had an exciting week full of fun Adar activities! The children enjoyed baking their hamamtashen, filling it with the filling of their choice. They created beautiful Refuah sheleimah cards for some people who are not feeling well so they too can have an Adar smile on their faces. We had a good laugh on silly hair/ hat day and loved pajama day too! "I'm so happy, I feel fine, because Purim is coming, in a very short time. We read the Megillah, and dress up too, we bring mishloach manos, to you and you!" This week we learned about wicked haman and how he wanted to kill Mordechai and all the Jews. Haman hated Mordechai because he refused to bow down to him ("no no never never uh uh uh..."). Boy were we glad to hear that haman had to ride Mordechai through the streets of shushan! And finally, we heard the vinahapoch hu of the Purim story- the decree to kill the Jews was cancelled and haman and his sons were hung! We also spoke about the mitzvos of Purim- mishloach manos, matanos l evyonim, Megillah and mishteh. NURSERY MOROT SUSAN & SUZIE The children had such a great week with all the fun pre Purim activities including, hamantashen baking and even wearing pajamas to school! We also had a great time learning about opposites. We played opposite games and matched pictures of opposites. We also used our bodies to carry out opposite motions. For example we jumped up and down, walked fast and slow and open and closed our eyes. We sang the song Open Shut Them and did the hand motions to go along with the song. One book that was read this week was The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. The children pointed out all the opposites in the book and loved listening to the rhyming words!

PRe-K PAGES JUDAIC STUDIES MORAH NECHAMA This week, we learned about Parashas Vayikra. We spoke about the Korbanos and learned that we are not able to bring Korbanos now since we do not have the Bais Hamikdash. We spoke about Tefillah and discussed the different reasons that we daven. For Parshas Zachor, the second of the Special Parshiyos that are read in this month, the Yiladim were taught about the story of Amalek fighting against Bnai Yisroel when they left Mitzrayim. They also learned that Haman, was a descendant from Amalek, and had the same hatred for the Bnai Yisroel. The children are very busy practicing Purim songs and can t wait for you to see all their beautiful projects that we have made for Purim. What a wonderful time the children had this week, with all the different special Purim activities. They also created a castle for all five Purim characters and can t wait to act out the Purim story! Some Purim stories that were listened to were: Sammy Spider's first Purim by Sylvia Rouss and A Very Special Gift by Shifra Gettinger. New Hebrew vocabulary phrases that were taught this week for Purim were: SECULAR STUDIES MORAH JUDY This week the Pre-K children enjoyed a special activity each day for the month of Adar! The activities brought laughter and smiles to all the children. Some of the activities included, face painting, silly hat day, and hamantashen baking. Our new letter this week was the letter Qq. Some words that the children thought of for the letter Q included, queen, quiet, quick, quilt and quack. They enjoyed a silly interactive story about the Q family. The lower case q was a princess saved by her long hair. We continued our theme of Bees and Butterflies. This week we focused on the butterfly. Some vocabulary words learned this week in connection with the butterfly were, wings, caterpillar, cocoon, collect, colorful, feelers, beautiful, chrysalis, and hatch. As an art activity the children created their own hanging cocoons with butterflies inside. We read Eric Carle's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The book highlights the fact that a real caterpillar eats and eats and eats before it goes into its cocoon. מלך יושב בכסא איפה המגילה? המגילה על השלחן איפה הרעשן? הרעשן על השלחן The letter Pey was introduced this week. Some of the new vocabulary words that we learned were: פרפר פרפרים פרות פרח פרחים פה פעמון פרה פיל

kindergarten CORNER JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT BAYLA, ESTY & RENA SECULAR STUDIES MOROT HEIDI & PEARLY We have been enjoying our Pre-Purim fun and excitement!! All the Kindergarten children had a wonderful time acting out the Purim story in costumes. Wait until you see our beautiful Megillas! We also enjoyed making our kesser and sharvit, as well as many other purim themed crafts. The children sat spellbound as the Purim story was told. They know so many details of these miraculous events that transpired so many years ago. Additionally, we had a great time baking hamatashen, wearing silly hair-do's, and even wearing our pajamas to school!!?! The letter fey was introduced this week. It is pey's twin brother and makes the sound "f". We played games and completed activities and worksheets with our new letter. It is amazing how many letters we already know so well! This week's parsha is Parshas Vayikra. It is the first parsha in the new sefer of the Torah. We talked about karbanos that the jews brought in the Mishkan. We learned that our tefillah replaces the karbanos that we no longer bring. In Project derech this week we learned that it is a mitzvah to stand up for a talmud chacham! This week, it was Oswald's turn to be the Supernoodle (leader of the Superkid's Club). He introduced the letter "Pp" by inviting all of his Superkid friends along for a picnic. The Superkids tried to help Oswald, by bringing various foods to the picnic; however, it seems that along the way they ate everything they brought! Not to worry though, because Oswald saved a big bag of gumdrops in a tree stump, for everyone to share! In addition to practicing writing the letter Pp and finding the correct food item, the children had to put the food items (which were the new sight words for this story) into their correct bags. We will continue working on our Superkids booklet over the next week, focusing on the letters- Pp,Vv and Ww. In Math, we started unit 8 which focuses on counting, writing and representing numbers through 20. We will be reviewing the concepts of greater than and less than and practicing writing numbers to 20 in the correct order, starting at a random number. For example, if the number 12 is written on the page, the children then have to continue writing the numbers 13,14,15 and so on. This unit also reviews counting until 100 and focuses on the numbers that end in zero like, 10,20,30 This was a great review for counting by 10's. With Purim less than a week away, we spent some time discussing different types of emotions that the characters in the Purim story might have experienced- being happy, fearful, excited, sad, nervous, angry and brave. We discussed these emotions and either role played or wrote/illustrated positive ways that the children can help themselves when experiencing these emotions. On Wednesday, Mrs. Rebecca Yohai from Bikur Cholim of came to our school to talk to the children about her organization. When we celebrated the 100th day of school, we had collected $1.00 from each child. This money was presented to her as a tzedaka donation to Bikur Cholim from the Kindergarten children. Additionally, each child wrote and illustrated a "feel better" card that was given to Mrs. Rebecca Yohai for her to distribute to those in need. Thank you to all of the parents for making this wonderful mitzva possible! What a great way to bring happiness to others!

Erev Shabbos Parashas Vayikra Shabbos Zachor 5776 Dear Parents, As we begin to read Sefer Vayikra this Shabbos, we are reminded of how we express our yearning, at every opportunity for the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash and the renewed opportunity to bring Korbanos, sacrifices. What are Korbanos? They are a physical manifestation of our attempt to connect with Hashem as the name implies Korban to bring korov close. We give up something of ours, dedicate it to Hashem, and thereby strengthen our relationship. What means do we use nowadays, when we do not have the opportunity to approach Hashem in this manner? We have Tefilla Avoda Shebalev the service of the heart. It is a much greater challenge to maintain focus on approaching Hashem without the assistance of a physical prop, so to speak. With a korban, standing in the awesomeness of the Beis Hamikdash it was relatively easy to feel a closeness to Hashem as one gave up something of value, that could be seen and felt. In our times, we are called upon to approach Hashem, purely through concentrating our hearts and words, something that requires much greater focus. If Tefilla is a challenge for adults, how much more so for the children. With at best a bare-bones understanding of the meaning of Tefilla, we ask the children to say words that they do not understand, for an extended period of time, and it is a formidable task. How can we help? What can parents do to make Tefilla more meaningful to their children? One could set about teaching the meaning and intent of the words in davening but that is not a recommended approach for the vast majority of parents for a variety of reasons. Leave that up to us in school. However, there is one thing that all of us can do demonstrate in word and deed, that Tefilla is IMPORTANT! This does not occur through sermons and reprimands. It does not occur through cajoling and sticker charts. True teaching comes through role modeling. If Tefilla is important to you, don t rush through it. If Tefilla is important, texting, WhatsApp, e-mailing and talking on your phone have absolutely no place while davening. If you truly feel the importance of Tefilla make it to Minyan even when it s difficult. And, if Tefilla is truly important to you -don t talk in shul. Smart principles of Chinuch must be applied to our young developing daveners. Bringing them to shul before they re ready will teach them to not have reverence for a holy place. Forcing them to say words of davening that are meaningless to them, will cause irreparable harm to any future interest in Tefilla. Let the children s interest and enthusiasm for davening guide you even if your child spends much less time on daily Tefilla than you feel is appropriate don t pressure them. If they seem to speed through davening appreciate that they went through the motions, and demonstrate without fanfare, how it should be done. Part of our daily Tefilos include beseeching Hashem to bring us back to the glorious days of bringing Korbanos. Let us show our children what an opportunity and zechus it is to be able to approach Hashem through Tefilla even though we currently don t have the privilege of Korbanos. If we do a good job davening, Hashem will undoubtedly bring us and our children up to the next level, as in the days of old, IY H. Best wishes for an uplifting and spiritually satisfying Shabbos, Rabbi Kalman Baumann
