Bequests and Memorial Gifts When preparing your will, please consider a bequest to Sacred Heart Parish or St. John s Parish. It is a wonderful way to assist in passing on the faith to future generations and to honor the members of your parish family. Consult your attorney or estate planner for assistance. The statement of your intentions should specifically state that you are bequeathing to the parish. All benefactors are remembered in the prayers and Masses of the parish. If you are looking for ways to remember or honor someone, please consider a gift to your parish community. . Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Recently some questions have been asked about the practice of arranging for a Mass to be celebrated for a person, or about Mass Cards and Spiritual Bouquets, and other questions regarding Mass intentions. In a few brief lines, I will try to explain and answer some of these questions. All Masses are offered for the intentions of all who are gathered together. We come to Mass with the things we wish to pray for and about. Many times, someone will request that an announced Mass be offered for a specific intention, for example in memory of someone who has died. While these can be offered for any occasion, they are usually associated with the anniversary of death or one month after the date of death, the month s mind. Many times these Masses are set aside many months in advance. Canon Law, the regulations of the church, state that only one announced intention can be accepted for each Mass. The exception to this being when offered for spouses, family members, etc. The rational is that the perception of trafficking in stipends is avoided. The current policy of the parish and the Archdiocese is that a $10.00 stipend (offering) is made for an announced Mass. No one is ever refused to have a Mass celebrated if they cannot make an offering. There are certain days of the year that intention masses are not permitted. On these days, the Masses are for all the intentions of all. Pastors are obligated to arrange for a Mass to be celebrated weekly, pro populo (for the people). Normally this is done on Sunday and on all major feasts. This is the Mass that is listed in the bulleting for The People of the Parish each week. When a person wishes to have a non-announced Mass said for some, they will stop at the rectory and request a "Mass Card". The card is usually sent to the family as a notice that the Mass is being offered. The intention from the Mass cards, along with the stipend, is usually given to missionaries or retired priests for celebration. The typical stipend for a Mass Card is $5.00. The other type of remembrance at Mass is called a Spiritual Bouquet. A person is enrolled in a charitable society, such as the Propagation of the Faith, for a period of time and is remembered with other members of the society in the Masses of the society. The stipend for a Spiritual Bouquet is normally $10.00. If you wish to have a Mass celebrated for a specific intention or obtain a Mass Card or Spiritual Bouquet for someone, please contact the rectory. Peace, Fr. Jack Faith Book Reflection on Today s Readings From today's Gospel: Jesus said to Peter: Amen, amen I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. Reflection: Our future is in God s hands and we baptized hold to the promise God has made to us, especially we older members. God has overcome death, raised Jesus from the dead and will be our constant God, offering us life this day and as we age into our future. So we ask ourselves: What is happening to our faith as we age? Has our experience of Christ changed as we have passed through different stages of our lives?
