Christ Church CHART 1355 Northern Boulevard Manhasset, NY 11030 Letter from the Rector November 1, 2011 All Saint s Day Dear Friends, Much will take place in November at Christ Church. I hope you will be able to be part of many of the activities we have planned. Sunday, November 6, is our celebration of All Saints. All Saints octave is a time of solemn joy. We give thanks for saints (holy ones) well-known and hardly known. We especially remember members of our families, our friends and members of the Christ Church family who have died and whose memories we wish to hold on to. We will remember your loved ones by name on All Saint s Day and at all services on All Saints Sunday. At the 10:00 AM Eucharist on that day, the choir will be joined by instrumentalists to present Gabriele Faure s Requiem as the music for the Eucharist. It will be a most moving worship and reflection experience. Sunday, November 20, will be our November family service and our celebration of Thanksgiving. More specially, it will be the first time we will have shared a service with the New Heart Mission Church. The joint service will be held at 11:15 AM in the church. This splits the accustomed times of the respective services of Christ Church and the New Heart Church. Our choirs and the ensemble of the New Heart Church will provide music for the service. Pastor Paul Chung and I will lead a joint worship service focusing on fellowship in Christ and thanksgiving for all of God s blessings. Following the service we will have a luncheon prepared by the New Heart Mission Church and the desserts will be prepared by Christ Church. We will have celebrations of the Holy Eucharist that day at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. All of those services will be said. The Vestry will have a retreat on the weekend of November 4 and 5. There will be a work session on Friday afternoon, dinner at the rectory that evening and a full day on Saturday at the Mercer School of Theology at Garden City. The retreat will focus on planning for the future of Christ Church, preparing to call a new rector and discerning the mission and ministry of Christ Church. In preparation for Christmas, Christ Church is undertaking three outreach projects: Samaritan s Purse, Coats for Kids and Adopt a Family. Details of these three ministries can be found within the Chart. In addition, the Chapel Choir will be singing at Lord and Taylor and will be joining other choirs in making a recording. Finally, don t forget the Parish Work Day on Saturday, November 19. We hope some leaves will fall by then so we can do our racking. This comes with my best wishes. Sincerely, Parish Notes: David B. Lowry, Rector Estate Sale The Rev d Victoria Affram-Boyd a Methodist minister who has been active at Christ Church is moving back to her native Ghana to continue her ministry there. She will be selling her home in Great Neck with all its contents before she leaves for Ghana. On Saturday, November 5 from 8:00am to 4:00pm she will be having an Estate Sale at 27 Udall Drive, Great Neck. We would very much hope that you and your friends would support Rev d Affram-Boyd by stopping by to see if there is anything you might need or have a use for i.e. outdoor furniture, tools, art work, dishes, glass wear; everything must go.

Men s dinner Monday, November 7 at 7:30pm On Monday November 7 at 7:30 a Men s Dinner the menu is a surprise and will be served at the Rectory. The cost of the dinner will be $10 (a discounted price for November only, which includes wine and dessert). Please sign up in the church of call the Parish office if you plan to attend. Volunteers are needed to organize/run Out-Reach Holiday Programs Volunteers are needed to help with the Coats for Kids project, as well as, the Adopt-a-Family program that we are doing this holiday season. Please sign up on the sheets at the back of church. CHAPEL CHOIR TO SING AT LORD AND TAYLOR: The Christ Church Chapel Choir will be singing holiday music at Lord and Taylor right here in Manhasset on Nov 14th at 5:30 PM. We invite any and all children (1st grade and up) to participate in this very grown-up experience! We also hope that the congregation will come out and support us at Lord and Taylor. This will be a special performance and chance to gain support in the community. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Laura Pavlovich at 627-3503 or Pavlovich.Laura@gmail.com. There will be only one rehearsal for the Lord and Taylor performance on Thursday, Nov. 10th from 5:00 to 6:00. 2 nd Annual Raking of Leaves Saturday, November 19 at 9am Christ Church Second Annual Raking of Leaves is scheduled for the morning of November 19 from 9am to 12 noon. Wear your work clothes, bring your rakes (fan & metal) shovels, brooms and be sure to wear your work gloves. Every Member Canvass This week you will be getting a letter about the Every Member Canvass, we want to complete the canvass by Sunday, November 20, which is the Feast of Christ the King and the Sunday before thanksgiving. It is a most appropriate time for us to affirm our support for the work of Christ Church and the gospel imperative to serve our community and the world. Christ Church is in midst of taking action to stabilize the long term finances of the church and to make our campus a place where programs can be run for church and community. However, it is necessary to have your support to keep the important programs at Christ Church viable. Please do be thoughtful and generous in support of Christ Church. Outreach: Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child - Our congregation and Sunday school classes will be participating again in Operation Christmas Child sponsored by Samaritans Purse. Our church family can share Christmas joy with needy children around the world by filling wrapped shoeboxes with small gifts for boys and girls ages 2-14. Please return your filled shoeboxes or you may make donations of small new toys, school supplies, hygiene items (no liquids), etc. to Arlene Blocker's classroom in the parish hall (please refer to the list of gift ideas in the rear of church). We are happy to accept donations of holiday gift wrap to wrap empty boxes, or any of the items on the list to go into the wrapped boxes. All donations will be greatly appreciated. The deadline for donations is Sunday, November 13 in order to allow time for them to be shipped around the world in time for Christmas. At this time we are collecting empty shoeboxes (separate lids only) in Mrs. Blocker's classroom to be wrapped by our Sunday School volunteer parents for your convenience. They will then be available for anyone to use and fill with gifts. If you have any questions please contact Susan Bunyon at 248-7355. SAVE THE DATE: LESSONS & CAROLS DECEMBER 11, 5:00PM On Sunday, December 11 at 5:00 P.M., the Christ Church Chancel Choir and Schola Cantorum will present an Evening Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. Patterned after the celebrated tradition from King s College, Cambridge, the service of lessons and carols will feature nine readings from scripture, taking the congregation on a journey from the Garden of Eden to Isaiah s prophecies about the coming of a Savior, and finally the realization of those prophecies in the Christmas story as told by Luke and Matthew and ending with John s unfolding of the great mystery of the Incarnation. Accompanying the readings will be anthems which punctuate the message of the scripture, as well as great hymns for Advent and Christmas. This service is not to be missed! Following the service, a Parish Christmas Party will be celebrated in the Parish House. For more details, see the December Chart.
