Looking unto Jesus - Heb 12:2 - Our Example on How to Be Humble - Lesson # 4 Introduction: A. In our lesson today on focusing on Jesus we want to examine the subject of Humility. B. There is no doubt that this characteristic of Christ is clearly evident in His life. 1. As the son of God amongst men - Christ was truly humble. C. The principals of Humility are exemplified by Jesus 1. Teaches us the essentiality of Humility 2. And we need to make application of the principals. D. Definition of Humility 1. Vine s Dictionary of New Testament Words - Humble (Adjective and Verb) A- 1,Adjective,5011,tapeinos> primarily signifies "low-lying." It is used always in a good sense in the NT, metaphorically, to denote (a) "of low degree, brought low,.. A- 2,Adjective,5011 5424,tapeinophron> "humble-minded" (phren, "the mind"), 1Peter 3:8; see COURTEOUS B- 1,Verb,5013,tapeinoo> akin to A, signifies "to make low," 2. ISBE - It by no means implies slavishness or servility; nor is it inconsistent with a right estimate of oneself, one's gifts and calling of God, or with proper self-assertion when called for. But the habitual frame of mind of a child of God is that of one who feels not only that he owes all his natural gifts, etc., to God, but that he has been the object of undeserved redeeming love, and who regards himself as being not his own, but God's in Christ.... The humble mind is thus at the root of all other graces and virtues. Self exaltation spoils everything.... (1Cor 13:4). a. It is not genuine humility when we humble ourselves with the feeling that we are greater than others, but only when we do not think of self at all. It is not alone the sense of sin that should create the humble spirit: Jesus had no sin.... There may be much self-satisfaction where sinfulness is confessed. We may be proud of our humility. It is necessary also always to beware of the pride that apes humility. II. Jesus exemplified Humility in His Life: A. Was meek and lowly in heart Mat. 11:28-30 1. Matthew 11:28-30 - Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. B. He washed the disciples feet John 13:12-16 1. John 13:12-16 - So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. C. Came to serve Luke 22:27 1. Luke 22:27 - For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. D. As prophesied Zec. 9:9; (Mat 21:5); Is. 53:7,8; (Act 8:32-35) Page 1 of 6

1. Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. a. Matthew 21:5 - Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 2. Isaiah 53:7-8 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. a. Acts 8:32-35 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: 33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. 34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. E. Gave His life Mat 20:28; Mark 10:45; Phili 2:5-8; Hebrews 2:10-18 1. Matthew 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. 2. Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. 3. Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 4. Hebrews 2:10-18 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. 13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. F. Jesus was Humble but that does not mean HE was weak: 1. Withstood temptation Mat 4:1-11 a. Matthew 4:1-11 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but Page 2 of 6

by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. 2. Endured personal wrong Is. 53; Mat 26:47-68; 27:1-50 a. Matthew 26:47-50 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. 49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. 50 And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. 3. Spoke with authority Mat 5:3-7:29; Mark 1:22 a. Sermon on the Mount - Matthew 7:28-29 ---- And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. b. Mark 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. 4. Rebuked false teaching and hypocrisy Mat. 15:3-12; 23:13-33 5. Matthew 15:3-12 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. 5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; 6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. 7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honourethme with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? 6. Cleansed the temple John 2:13-17 a. John 2:13-17 ---- And the Jews passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father s house an house of merchandise. 17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Page 3 of 6

III. Jesus taught us how to be humble A. The first shall be last & the last first Mat. 20:25-28; 23:11,12; Luke 14:11; 22:25-27 1. Matthew 20:25-28 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let himbe your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. B. Be humble like a child - Mat 18:3-4 1. Matthew 18:3-4 ---- And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. C. His disciples are to follow His example John 13:13-17 1. John 13:13-17 ---- Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. IV. As Christians we must learn to make application of these teachings of Christ: A. An essential part of our character Mat. 5:3; Col. 3:12; 1 Peter 5:5 1. Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2. Colossians 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 3. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. B. Humility is Essential to practical Christianity Rom6:16,17; 12:9-18; 1 Cor. 13:4; Gal. 6:1 1. Romans 6:16-17 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 2. Romans 12:9-18 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. 14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another.mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits. 17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of allmen. 18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. 3. 1 Corinthians 13:4 ---- Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 4. Galatians 6:1 ---- Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Page 4 of 6

C. Essential to obedience, keeping unity & working together Eph 4:1-6; Phili 2:1-8 1. Ephesians 4:1-6 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 2. Philippians 2:1-8 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not everyman on his own things, but everyman also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. D. Essential in perseverance and enduring correction Heb 12:1-11 1. Hebrews 12:1-11 ---- Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shallwe not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. a. Be careful of anyone who has to tell you that he is HUMBLE! b. Many equate boldness, confidence, and an uncompromising spirit with arrogance, while equating a soft, uncertain and compromising spirit with humility. E. True humility isnot timidity but boldness!! Acts 4:13,29,31; 7:51-60; 2 Cor. 7:4; Phili. 1:20 1. Acts 4:13,29,31 - Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, theymarvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. a. 29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, b. 31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. Page 5 of 6

F. True humility is NOT uncertainty but confidence!! Acts 28:31; Eph 3:12; 1 John 3:21 1. Acts 28:31 ---- Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him. 2. Ephesians 3:12 - In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. 3. 1 John 3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. G. True humility does NOT COMPROMISE truth Gal. 2:5; 2 Cor. 10:3-5; 1. Galatians 2:5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. 2. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 ---- For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; H. True humility does NOT surrender but fights!! Eph 6:10-18; 2 Tim 2:3 1. Ephesians 6:10-18 ---- Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching there unto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 2. 2 Timothy 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. V. Conclusion: A. Jesus was Humble B. He taught us to be humble C. Humility is NOT WEAKNESS but STRENGTH!! D. Humility is essential to salvation and exaltation!!!! Page 6 of 6
