ST JOHN PAUL II CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL Volume 16 13 th October 2016 School Charisms Daily Practical Witness to Christ, Community Prayer, Sustainability, Inclusivity, Challenging Injustice, Embracing Diversity In Harmony Nidja Noongar Boodjar Noonook Nyininy St John Paul II Feast Day - 22 nd October Traditionally, the feast of a saint is held on dies natalis, which is the day of one's death or their arrival in heaven. John Paul II died on April 2 but that day usually falls during Holy Week. To guarantee the day will be solemnly celebrated every year, the Vatican decided his day of liturgical memory will be on October 22, the Anniversary day of the Mass for the inauguration of his pontificate. Oh, St. John Paul II, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing! Bless the church that you loved and served and guided, courageously leading it along the paths of the world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who were your great passion. Help them dream again, help them look up high again to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth. Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice. You tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that we may be tireless sowers of peace. Amen. Dear Parents Welcome back for the final term this year. I hope you had an enjoyable holiday break. The children certainly seemed to enjoy catching up with one another at the start of the week to share holiday adventures! I would like to take the opportunity to thank many of the teaching staff who gave up part of their holiday to attend a Kagan course. Being a school that uses the Kagan philosophy of co-operative learning through engagement, it is important that staff know the appropriate structures and how they should be implemented. I m sure that they are looking to put into action their newly learned skills. Our own Acolyte Congratulations to Mr Dalton who at the end of last term was inducted as an acolyte. We look forward to seeing Mr Dalton helping serve on the altar with Fr Vinh at future Masses. Interschool Athletics The Interschool Athletics carnival will take place on October 20 (field events) & October 21 (track & team events). We wish all our competitors the best of luck and know they will represent the school with distinction. Parent Meeting for Reconciliation Parents of children making the sacrament of Penance are required to attend, with their child, a meeting on 18 October 6 to 7pm. Summer Uniform The School Board have been researching the introduction of a girls summer dress. A big thanks to Alexia Pierre for the time and effort she has committed to this project. We hope to have the new summer dress available from the start of next year. Breakfast Club Please see the attached letter for information about the Breakfast Club. We are seeking additional support from parent volunteers, even if you want to just come along initially to have a look at how things are done. A big thanks to Chrissi Battistessa for taking on the main co-ordinator role and to the other parents who have volunteered their services to get this project successfully operating in the school. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RECONCILIATION MEETING FOR PARENTS AND CANDIDATES The Sacrament of Penance celebrates God s love for us through the gift of forgiveness. This Sacrament enables us to experience God s mercy through forgiveness of our sins. Reconciliation gives us the help to work at and grow in our relationship with God and with others. In our parish, there is an opportunity to go to Reconciliation from 8.45 to 9.15 each Sunday, prior to the 9.30 Mass. Next Tuesday, October 18, from 6.00 7.00pm is the Reconciliation Meeting for those preparing for the Sacrament of Penance and their parents. This evening is an essential part of the lead up to your child s special day and an opportunity for clarification of logistics of the ceremony, and for parents and children to recall together what this special Sacrament is all about. There will be a Mass at school on Wednesday, November 16 at 9.00 am followed by the Reconciliation ceremony for these students. We will then have a morning tea to celebrate which should conclude by 11.30 am. Parents of students making their Reconciliation are invited to join with us for the Mass and the Reconciliation ceremony afterwards. Parents are welcome to bring in a plate to share on the day as we will be having a morning tea to celebrate this special day for the students making their First Reconciliation.

MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY October is the month of the Holy Rosary. This is a special prayer that many pray around the dinner table and we will use at school during this month. Each decade of the rosary is focussed on a particular event in Jesus life from the Gospels. When we as Catholics recite the twelve prayers that form a decade of the rosary, they meditate on the mystery or event associated with that decade. It isn t just a recitation of prayers, but a meditation on the grace of God. OUR FEAST DAY Next Wednesday we will have a whole school Mass which begins our celebration of our school s feast day. Saturday October 22 is the actual date of the Feast Day which is the Feast Day of St John Paul II. In preparation for the Feast Day our parish will be holding a Novena. The Novena begins on Friday October 14 with a 7pm Mass, the Saturday Vigils will continue to be held at 6pm, with the remaining Sunday to Friday Masses to be held at 7pm. You are invited to bring a plate to share after each Mass. Our parish will be celebrating this feast day in a special way on Sunday October 23 with a Feast Day Mass which our band and choir will be leading the singing for, followed by a lunch and entertainment. We will have a special Feast Day Retreat during school on Monday, October 24. ALTAR SERVERS There will be an enrolment day and training with Fr Vinh this Sunday, October 16, after the 9.30am Mass and morning tea, concluding by 11.30am. Both new and experienced altar servers are asked to come along to this training session. New altar servers will need to complete an Altar Servers Enrolment Form (Please see attachment). Anyone who has received Holy Communion is welcome to enrol. Bring the completed enrolment form to the 9.30 am Mass on Sunday, October 16, here in the undercover sacred space area. The next enrolment won t be till next year, so please enrol now. We look forward to welcoming many new altar servers to support our Masses. There is a social event for all altar servers planned (we are looking at meeting at Darklight in Joondalup, cost ~ $15 MORE DETAILS WILL FOLLOW AT THE ENROLMENT MEETING THIS WEEKEND). Please speak to Fr Vinh or myself if you have any questions. Tim Maxwell (Assistant Principal, Religious Education) INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM Seton, the main tutor at our school from PMI, entertained students whilst they were sitting outside enjoying their lunch it was as if we were on holidays at an outdoor restaurant! We ve had a great response to the instrumental program being offered after school through PMI (Primary Music Institute), with many students enrolled to start small group and individual lessons in keyboard and guitar. Small group lessons are also offered for brass and woodwind. PMI offers individual lessons for $32.50 for 30 minutes. Small group lessons are $14.50 per student for 30 minutes (2 to 5 students). Whilst the lessons will be held here at school and will be a wonderful support to our school music program, parents will deal directly with PMI in all arrangements regarding lessons. If your child missed out on receiving a flyer about this instrumental program or has misplaced it, I can pass one on to them. Tim Maxwell (Performing Arts Coordinator)

These photos are great to have for yourself or make wonderful gifts! INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES Kids & Anxiety Workshop Anxiety is a normal part of children's development. It is estimated that up to 22% of children experience anxiety more intensely and more often than other children, stopping them from getting the most out of life.
