OUR LADY OF CANVEY & ENGLISH MARTYRS 224 Long Road, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 0JS www.ourladyofcanvey.org Parish Priest: Fr Eamonn Power Email: ourladyofcanvey@gmail.com Tel.: 01268 682599 Presbytery Tel.: 01268 680265 Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9.30-2.00pm Charity No 234092 Pray for the Church and Priests Dear friends in Christ This weekend we reach the 33rd Sunday of year b, which means that the liturgical year is coming to an end and Advent will soon begin. This weekend the author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us that Christ has been revealed as the one supreme sacrifice that takes away the sins of the world. As the ordained priests of the Church we have the unique privilege of making that sacrifice present again and again in the holy Mass. The Church will always need the ordained priesthood and the Eucharist, so let us always remember to pray for vocations to the priesthood. Parish Christmas Bazaar Things have improved since my last entry on this subject my friends, but we still need a lot more support and volunteers, especially if we are to fulfil my ambition, which I hope you share, that in this, our 80th year, this become the best bazaar ever! Please both support it and promote it my friends. There will be people at the church doors this weekend to help take names and contact details. Diocesan planning for the future My friends, the Diocesan Strategic and Planning Group (DSPG) have, over several months now, been meeting and planning possibilities for the future administration and running of the Diocese of Bentwood, bearing in mind the need to evangelise the world around us with the possible future number of priests. Incidentally, I realised recently, somewhat to my shock, that, of all the non-retired priests in the deanery, I am the eldest! With regard to the future a few things should be noted:- 1. The ratio of priests to laypeople, as affirmed by Monsignor Kevin recently, is amongst the best in the country 2. What has been achieved so far only has the status of proposals and is not by any means, set in stone 3. Bearing both the above in mind, there is no immediate urgency for any change in the status quo The proposal for Southend deanery is a parish partnership arrangement with both Benfleet and Rayleigh, administered by 1 and a half priests (I must admit my friends, I have no idea what that means!). All of this is on the agenda for the next deanery meeting and as Dean I will be presiding the meeting and will, of course, be making my own views very clear! In the immediate future the main objective seems to revolve around social gatherings/meals and representatives and clergy of the affected parishes and more news will come later God Bless you all, Fr Eamonn

Today is the Second World Day of the Poor; Pope Francis words from this day last year continue to inspire us: Blessed are the open hands that embrace the poor and help them: they are hands that bring hope. Blessed are the hands that reach beyond every barrier of culture, religion and nationality, and pour the balm of consolation over the wounds of humanity. Blessed are the open hands that ask nothing in exchange, with no ifs or buts or maybes : they are hands that call down God s blessing upon their brothers and sisters. In that spirit, Caritas Diocese of Brentwood is launched by Bishop Alan today, to serve Essex and East London. The word caritas means charity, in the fullest sense of Christian love, and our Diocesan Caritas exists to support and encourage everyone who is working to put Christ s love into action by supporting the ill, the poor and the marginalised. There is a new website (www.caritasbrentwood.org) and this is a great tool for people who want to be volunteers. Type in where you live and the kind of project where you would like to offer help, and the website will show you these projects in your area. Our Caritas is part of a national and international network, and once a year will bring together as many people as possible who are volunteering in the Diocese for a day of networking, sharing good practice, training and celebrating success. Bishop Alan says, I am launching Caritas Diocese of Brentwood today full of hope about the difference it will make to all our work for social justice, in the name of Jesus Christ. Pope Francis asks us to go to the edges and Caritas is full of projects which do just that. I encourage every parishioner to look at the website and to get involved in any way that they can. Our Diocese has also been accredited as a Living Wage Employer; the Living Wage lifts families out of poverty, and if you are an employer, or can influence your company, please look into it (www.livingwage.org.uk) Please keep this new initiative in your prayers.

Questions on the Catholic Faith Why is the Eucharist a "pledge of future glory"? The Eucharist is a pledge of future glory because it fills us with every grace and heavenly blessing. It fortifies us for our pilgrimage in this life and makes us long for eternal life. It unites us already to Christ seated at the right hand of the Father, to the Church in heaven and to the Blessed Virgin and all the saints. In the Eucharist, we "break the one bread that provides the medicine of immortality, the antidote for death and the food that makes us live forever in Jesus Christ." (Saint Ignatius of Antioch) What is meant by the term "Heaven"? Part 2 By Heaven" is meant the state of supreme and definitive happiness. Those who die in the grace of God and have no need of further purification are gathered around Jesus and Mary, the angels and the saints. They thus form the Church of heaven, where they see God "face to face" (1 Corinthians 13:12). They live in a communion of love with the Most Blessed Trinity and they intercede for us. "True and subsistent life consists in this: the Father, through the Son and in the Holy Spirit, pouring out his heavenly gifts on all things without exception. Thanks to his mercy, we too, men that we are, have received the inalienable promise of eternal life." (Saint Cyril of Jerusalem) Constance, Connie Goller RIP Our departed friend Connie passed away in Southend University Hospital of the 30 th October at the age of 98 years old and her Funeral Mass takes place here in Our Lady of Canvey on Monday the 26 th November at 10.00am, with committal at Woodside. In the meantime we pray for Connie and all those who mourn her passing at this time. Eternal rest grant unto her o Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace Amen.
