Calvary Courier December 2018 A Publication of Calvary Lutheran Church, Moline, Illinois From the Pastor, Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." (Matthew 1:18-23) Pastor, people have said to me on more than one occasion, I have a friend who has just lost a loved one (or been diagnosed with a serious illness, or lost a job, or had their house burn, or any number of other personal tragedies) and I don t know what to say to them so I haven t even gone over to see them. My simple answer to them is that they need not say anything. In fact, there is probably no right thing to say (but I could give you a long list of the wrong things that have been said). If you must say something, I suppose the simplest thing to say is I m sorry for you loss. But what is far more important than seeking that perfect comment in the hopes it will make everything better, is to simply be there for your friend. It is called a ministry of presence. An ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold, and arms to hug often do far more to help heal and console than anything that may come out of a mouth. The loving presence of friend with us during one of life s trying times says louder than words, I care and you are not alone. And that is exactly the message of the Christmas story. I am constantly awed by the love of God in Jesus. Through the child of Mary, born in a simple stable of a simple woman, God came into the world to be Emmanuel, to be with us. Think about that. God came to be with us. The supreme being the almighty the maker of heaven of earth. God came to us, simple, struggling, sinful human beings. God came to us, to be with us, in the midst of life s trials and tribulations. God came to us with an ear to listen to us, a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold and arms to hug us. God came to us, to be with us, to be Emmanuel. God came to us in the baby Jesus to let us know that He cares and that we are not alone. It is my prayer for you, as we begin this Christmas season and throughout the year, that you recognize the presence of God in your lives through the Babe of Bethlehem. Know that God is with us. By the birth of Jesus hear God say I care about you and you are not alone. In the Peace of the Season, Pastor Knowles ******************************************************** CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES On Christmas Eve, let us join together and celebrate the birth of Jesus by attending Calvary s Sunset service at 4:00 p.m. or St. James Evening service at 7:00 p.m.

Assistant Dear Calvary Friends, Thank you for the wonderful "shower of birthday cards". What a blessing it is to be wrapped in your love and care in such a personal way. I enjoyed hearing from so many of you and I read every one with thanksgiving. I felt I was with you once again as I had my coffee in my "Calvary Cup" and reminisced about all the times I had a cup of coffee and worshiped, fellowshipped, and worked with you in person. Now I pray for all of you every day and wish I could be there in person for some of your 100th anniversary events, but will have to enjoy hearing about them. I would appreciate it if someone would send me copies of the special things you are doing to celebrate. I thank God for all of the people at Calvary who are (and were) a part of my faith journey. What a blessing you are to me and to my family. ---- With thanks, love and prayers, Lorraine Beckingham HAPPY HOOKERS will meet Wednesday, November 28 at 9:30 am to package gifts to the shut-ins.
