Welcome & Announcements Call to Worship Sunday, November 25, 2018 Time after Pentecost Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Give thanks to the Lord for God is good. God s steadfast love endures forever. Come, let us praise God with all that we have. Let us worship God with thanksgiving. For the good world; for things great and small, beautiful and awesome; for seen and unseen splendors; Thank you, God. For human life; for talking and moving and thinking together; for common hopes and hardships shared from birth until our dying; Thank you, God. For sticking with us when we have failed to do your will For loving us when we are hard to love For forgiving us when we are slow to forgive others. Thank you, God. For your help in times of doubt and sorrow; for healing our diseases; for preserving us in temptation and danger; Thank you, God. Above all, O God, for your Son Jesus Christ, who lived and died and lives again for our salvation; for our hope in him. We thank and praise you, God, for your everlasting love. Thanks be to God. Amen. 1

Opening Hymn Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty 413 1 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! 2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert and art, and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in pow'r, in love and purity. 4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Text: Reginald Heber, 1783-1826, alt. Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Let us pray God of our lives, when we look back on our lives, we realize that you have carried us all the way. Thank you for sticking with us. Help us to trust that whatever comes our way, you are with us, your loving hand guiding us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. WORD Scripture Reading 2 Timothy 4:6-8 2

A reading from Second Timothy As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God Children s Message Please stand, as you are able Scripture Acclamation Ancient Words Holy words long preserved For our walk in this world They resound with God's own heart O let the ancient words impart Ancient words ever true Changing me changing you We have come with open hearts O let the ancient words impart 3

God s Word for the Day 1 Kings 2:1-4; 10-12 A reading from First Kings. Hear God s Word for God s People. Speak, Lord, for your servants are listening. When David s time to die drew near, he charged his son Solomon, saying: I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, be courageous, and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his ordinances, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn. Then the LORD will establish his word that he spoke concerning me: If your heirs take heed to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail you a successor on the throne of Israel. Then David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. Please be seated Message The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song Hymn of the Day The Church s One Foundation Hymnal #654 1 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word. From heav'n he came and sought her 4

to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth: one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with ev'ry grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Through toil and tribulation and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. Oh, blessed heav'nly chorus! Lord, save us by your grace, that we, like saints before us, may see you face to face. Text: Samuel J. Stone, 1839-1900 5

Apostles Creed Hymnal pg. 105 I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always And also with you Please share the peace of our Risen Christ with your neighbors Offering MEAL An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. Offertory Music 6

Offertory Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful Hymnal #182 Offering Prayer Let us pray We give you thanks, o God, for we know that all that we have and all that we are comes from you. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 7

The time is now. Jesus calls us all to this meal. Lamb of God Hymnal pg 174 Music during Communion This Little Light of Mine Hymnal #677 1 This little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine; this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine; this little light of mine, I'm goin'-a let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. 2 Ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine; ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine; ev'rywhere I go, I'm goin'-a let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. 3 Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine; Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine; Jesus gave it to me, I'm goin'-a let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Text: African American spiritual Abide with Me Hymnal #629 8

1 Abide with me, fast falls the eventide. The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, oh, abide with me. 2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see; O thou who changest not, abide with me. 3 I need thy presence ev'ry passing hour; what but thy grace can foil the tempter's pow'r? Who like thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me. 4 I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me! 5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; heav'n's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. We Come to the Hungry Feast ELW 479 1 We come to the hungry feast hungry for a word of peace. To hungry hearts unsatisfied the love of God is not denied. We come, we come to the hungry feast. 2 We come to the hungry feast hungry for a world released from hungry people of ev'ry kind, the poor in body, poor in mind. We come, we come to the hungry feast. 3 We come to the hungry feast hungry that the hunger cease, and knowing, though we eat our fill, 9

the hunger will stay with us; still we come, we come to the hungry feast. Text: Ray Makeever, b. 1943 Text 1982 Ray Makeever, admin. Augsburg Fortress. OneLicense.Net A-704219 Table Blessing The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in God s grace. Prayer after Communion Let us pray God of abundance, we give you thanks because at this table you have fed us not with bread and wine alone but with the precious gift of your life. As we go forth from this place, make us into your living body in the world, that all the hungry may be filled, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Announcements SENDING Benediction May you know the love of the God who created you just as you are. May you know the grace of the God who picks you up when you fall short. May you know the peace of the God who is with you all the way. And may you give thanks to the God whose + blessing goes with you both now and forever. Amen. Sending Song Here I Am, Lord Hymnal #574 1 "I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I, who made the stars of night, 10

I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?" Refrain Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. 2 "I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?" Refrain 3 "I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?" Refrain Text: Daniel L.
