12 Children s Bible Reading Plan November 26 December 28, 2018

Overview for Parents: This Advent season we will be talking about the ways Jesus came to us: as a man, as God s Son, as a King, as our Savior. We will also see that He came to give us rest and peace. Some people had trouble accepting the person Jesus claimed to be. We need to understand each of them as these perspectives teach us something important about Jesus and our relationship with Him. Christmas is the perfect time to remember who Jesus is, and why we celebrate His birth. 2 11

Elementary Kids Bible Reading Plan Week 5: Dec. 24-28 Jesus came to bring rest Do you ever feel tired from being so busy? Sometimes we fill our days with so many activities that we don t have time to spend with Jesus and to rest. We might even be filling our calendars with really good things like hanging out with friends, going to church, and helping other people. But doing too much sometimes makes us feel overwhelmed and anxious. Jesus doesn t want us to feel that way, he wants us to rest in him. Preschool Bible Reading Plan Week 1: Nov. 26-30 Jesus was a person just like us This week read these three stories in The Beginner s Bible with your child and use them to talk about how God sent Jesus to earth as Mary and Joseph s baby to live just like we live. Jesus laughed, cried, played, slept. He experienced the kinds of things we do, both good and bad, so he is able to understand just what we need and how we feel. Jesus loves us and wants to be our Best Friend, the person we go to first. Day 1: Read Matthew 11:28-30. What kind of rest is Jesus talking about? Do you ever feel like you are carrying a heavy burden? Day 2: Read Jeremiah 6:16. How do we find rest for our souls? Have you ever told God no to something he has asked you to do? Why is it important to say yes to God? Day 3: Read Mark 6:30-31. Where did Jesus and his disciples go to rest? Do you have a quiet place that you can go to to spend time with Jesus? Day 4: Read Exodus 20:8-11. Why do we have 6 days of work and 1 day of rest? What example did God give us? What do you and your family do together to rest? Day 5: Read Philippians 4:4-9. What should we do instead of feeling anxious? What are some things you feel anxious about that you can bring to God in prayer? What does God promise us when we pray? Page 266 Page 271 Page 409 Week 2: Dec. 3-7 Jesus was God s Son This week read these three stories with your child and use them to explain that Jesus was both a human being (like us) and God at the same time. While Mary and Joseph were Jesus parents on earth, Jesus was really God s Son, and so he was just like His Father perfect! To know what God is like, we just have to read what Jesus was like they one in the same! May you find rest in Jesus and no longer carry heavy burdens. Page 266 Page 296 Page 303 10 3

Preschool Bible Reading Plan Week 3: Dec. 10-14 Jesus came as a King This week read these three stories with your child and use them to show how Jesus came as our true King. He is God and there is no one greater than Him! Jesus was not the kind of king who lived in a palace in his kingdom, sat on a throne, wore a gold crown, and had servants. He Jesus kingdom is not on earth, his kingdom is in heaven, where we will one day live with Him. We need to honor Jesus as our King, and obey Him out of love. Page 286 Page 291 Page 427 Week 4: Dec. 17-21 Jesus came as our Savior This week read these three stories with your child and use them to teach that God sent Jesus to earth as our Savior. Jesus was born to save or rescue us from the punishment for our sins. Sin is when we disobey God. Because God is perfect and cannot be around sin, He sent Jesus to take our punishment and take away our sins so we can one day live with Him in heaven. He wants everyone to be there! What a great gift God gave us in Jesus! Elementary Kids Bible Reading Plan Week 4: Dec. 17-21 Jesus came as our Savior God s people knew there was a Messiah coming to save them but they didn t expect Jesus to come the way that he did. They thought that the Messiah would be a strong earthly king who would save them from the Roman people. But Jesus came to be the Savior of the whole world to save us from our sins. Accepting Jesus as your Savior is the most important decision you will ever make in your life and the only way you can be free from sin. Day 1: Read Matthew 1:18-21. What did the angel say to Joseph? Why did God send his Son to earth? What does Immanuel mean? Have you made Jesus your Savior? Day 2: Read 1 John 4:7-14. How did God show us how much he loved us? What is the definition of real love? Day 3: Read Titus 3:4-7. Why did God save us? What confidence do we have? What does it mean to have eternal life? Day 4: Read Acts 4:12, Isaiah 43:11. Why is it important to accept Jesus as our Savior? Is Jesus the only one who can save us? Day 5: Read Acts 13:38-39. What was Paul proclaiming? What happens when you believe in Jesus? Who do you know that needs to hear this message? May you trust in Jesus as your Savior and worship him forever! Page 277 Page 282 Page 391 4 9

Elementary Kids Bible Reading Plan Week 3: Dec. 10-14 Jesus came as a King God s chosen people were waiting for the Messiah to come and save them. They knew that the Messiah would be a son of David and would be King of Jerusalem. But Jesus wasn t the kind of King they were expecting! Jesus is a humble king, who came as a baby and lived a humble life. One day he will come back to us and every person on earth will see that he is really a King not only of Jerusalem, but of the whole world. Preschool Bible Reading Plan Week 5: Dec. 24-28 Jesus came to bring rest This week read these three stories with your child and use them to share that Jesus came to show us how important it is for us to live in peace and to rest by trusting Him. Jesus wants us to have joyful lives free from worry and fear. When we take time read about God in the Bible it helps us to see how much He loves us and cares for us. When we pray to Jesus he will hear us and help us. What a good thing to remember as we start a brand new year! Day 1: Read Matthew 2:1-3. Why was King Herod so scared of Jesus being born? What did the wise men want to do when they found Jesus? How do you worship Jesus in your life? Day 2: Read Luke 19:28-40. What animal did Jesus ride into Jerusalem? What did the people do when he arrived? What did they say to Jesus? Day 3: Read John 18:33-40. What did Jesus say about his Kingdom? Why did Jesus come into the world? Day 4: Read Luke 23:36-43. What did the sign above the cross say? What did the two criminals say to Jesus? How are they different? Day 5: Read Revelation 19:16. What does it mean that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords? Page 318 Page 364 Page 385 May you worship Jesus as the King of your life! 8 5

Elementary Kids Bible Reading Plan Week 1: Nov. 26-30 Jesus was a person just like us Jesus came to earth in the most humble way as a baby. Many of God s people expected Jesus to come like a mighty warrior or king to save them. Instead, he came as a little baby to experience the same things that we do in our lives. Jesus was fully God and fully human, which makes him perfect and holy but still able to understand our weaknesses. Jesus wants to be like a brother to us to relate to us, to help us, and to love us. Day 1: Read Luke 2:1-20. Where was Jesus born? Why do you think that Jesus came as a baby and not as a strong, grown man? Day 2: Read Luke 2:25-32. What does Simeon say about Jesus? Who is God s salvation for? Day 3: Read Philippians 2:5-8. Jesus was God, but he became a human for us. What word is used to describe Jesus character? What does that word mean to you? Day 4: Read Hebrews 4:14-16. Does Jesus understand our weaknesses and temptations? How does it make you feel to know that Jesus experienced the same feelings that we do good and bad? Day 5: Read Hebrews 2:11-15. How is Jesus like a brother to us? Why did Jesus have to become a human in order to save us? May you become closer to Jesus, knowing that he understands you because he became a human just like you! Elementary Kids Bible Reading Plan Week 2: Dec. 3-7 Jesus was God s Son Jesus was the Son of God, but not everyone believed him. It was hard for God s people to understand how God could be fully human and fully God at the same time. But Jesus had to become a human so he could die on the cross and pay for our sin. He also had to be God so that he could be the perfect sacrifice for us, and never sin. As Christians, we should live our lives worshipping Jesus as the only Son of God. Day 1: Read Luke 1:26-35. What does the angel say about Mary s baby she will have? How does the angel describe Jesus being fully God and fully man? Day 2: Read Isaiah 9:6-7. What do each of these names of Jesus mean to you? Which one stands out to you the most? Day 3: Read John 1:1-9 Who is the Word? What do we discover about Jesus in these verses? Day 4: Read John 10:22-33. Why were the people angry at Jesus for claiming to be the Son of God? What animal does Jesus talk about to describe his followers? How is our relationship with God like a shepherd and his sheep? Day 5: Read Matthew 27:39-44. What did the people want Jesus to do to prove that he was the Son of God? Why did Jesus choose to stay on the cross? May you believe that Jesus is the true Son of God, perfect in every way. 6 7
