RULES AND REGULATIONS The Miss Division is open to young women 17-23 years of age and the Teen Division is open to young women 13-16 years of age. You must be single and have never born a child. Miss and Teen Miss Little Red Church are open to all young women residing in the State of Louisiana. The Miss and Teen Contestants will have three parts to their competitions: Interview, Self-Introduction and Evening Gown. There will be no on-stage question. The Directors will practice on stage with each Miss and Teen Contestant once their interviews are complete. Interview: Attire is a blouse (blazers, jackets & cardigans are acceptable, but not necessary), jeans & heels. As with any wardrobe piece, what you wear for interview should convey your personality and the cut and color should flatter you. Shoes and jewelry can be fashion forward, but these components should just compliment and not distract. The Miss Contestants will each have a 7-minute interview and the Teen Contestants will each have a 5-minute interview on Sunday, May 7, at 1:00 pm in the SCB school gymnasium. Please arrive no later than 12:30 pm as we may start earlier than 1 p.m. depending on the number of total contestants. All Contestants must remain for the entire interviewing process of all Contestants in their division. Once all Contestants in each division are finished with interviews, each division will have a final line-up. Following the interviews, the Directors will hold a run-through with all Contestants. At this time, you may practice speaking on the microphone. Parents: In order for the Contestants to get to know one another, we ask that you not remain in the gym during interviews and practice. The Contestants will be free to leave following the run-through. Self-Introduction: Get creative! All Miss and Teen Contestants will be required to do a self-introduction to last no longer than 30 seconds. This will be done immediately prior to your evening gown competition (you will already be in your evening gown). Evening Gown: Attire is a full-length evening gown of your choice. If you do not have an evening gown, consider borrowing one from a friend. Prom dresses are perfect for this! Your evening gown should be age appropriate and fit properly. Interviews will be held immediately before evening gown, so there will not be time for multiple hairstyles. Your hair and makeup for interview should be ready for evening gown competition. The Judges will be informed of this, as well. Only one person per Contestant is allowed in the dressing room. The evening gown part of the competition begins at 2:30 pm sharp. You must be dressed and ready for competition by 2:15 pm. If interviews run over, we will make adjustments accordingly. There is no set routine. The stage is a straight stage with the Judges directly in front. Obligations: The Miss and Teen titles are binding for one year. Miss Little Red Church and Teen Miss Little Red Church need to be present to preside over the 2018 Festival. They will also be requested to stay and attend the remainder of the 2017 Festival. Miss and Teen Little Red Church will also be required to accept the Proclamation from the St. Charles Parish Council at their regular council meeting, which is held during the month prior to the 2018 Festival. Miss and Teen Little Red Church may not enter any other pageant during their reign. The only exception to this is LAFF Queen of Queens. Miss Little Red Church will represent the Little Red Church Food and Fun Fest at the 2018 LAFF Queen of Queens Pageant in February 2018, with hotel and admission paid.

Miss Little Red Church must attend at least 15 events during her reign and Teen Miss Little Red Church must attend at least 10 events during her reign. The events must be approved by the Directors. Miss Little Red Church Teen Miss Little Red Church Judging Criteria Hi, Ladies! We are so excited you have made the decision to compete for Miss Little Red Church or Teen Miss Little Red Church. We have been working very hard to make this a memorable and positive experience for you. As you may have noticed, this title brings with it a tall order as the queen you will become an Ambassador of the Little Red Church Food and Fun Fest, representing the festival and the community of St. Charles Borromeo wherever you travel. We are looking for Queens who love people, love traveling, are excited about promoting our festival, and who are proud to be representatives of the Little Red Church Food and Fun Fest. In this packet, you will find the judging criteria, along with a brief history of St. Charles Borromeo. This is the 37th annual Little Red Church Food and Fun Fest. Please familiarize yourself with the history, as we have instructed our Judges to discuss it in the interview. Don t panic! This is not a question and answer session; it is merely an opportunity for the Judges to discuss with you the community and festival you will be representing. Most of the interview should come from your bios, and the Miss division questions may come from current events, as well. Queen s Criteria We firmly believe that the Miss Little Red Church and Teen Miss Little Red Church Queens should possess the following characteristics: approachability, intelligence, communication skills, beauty, and dedication. Personal Interview Contestants will be judged on Overall Appearance, Conversational Ability, Poise, Personality and Beauty. On-Stage Introduction The introduction will be scored on presentation. Presentation includes your speech, volume and delivery of your introduction. Be sure to include some fun facts about the Festival and/or Church History. Evening Gown Competition This is your moment to shine! Contestants will be judged on their Poise and Personality, Overall Appearance, and Beauty. As you can see, we have carefully constructed our criteria and have taken the time to instruct the judges on exactly what we want in a queen. We thank you again, from the bottom of our hearts, for competing in the Miss Little Red Church pageant. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions. St. Charles Borromeo Church 1806 Parish Established in 1723 St. Charles Borromeo and its parishioners have been an integral part of South Louisiana and its history. Our cemetery holds tombs dating back to the 1700 s, including the Destrehan Family Tomb. Our church parish began as a little log chapel, on the river bank in 1772. The first German settlers in this area built the chapel as a symbol of their faith, thankful for their arrival to this land. By 1860, the little chapel was replaced by the frame Little Red Church which for many years was a landmark for steamboat pilots who traveled the Mississippi River. (picture above) When the Little Red Church came into view, the passengers hailed its sight, knowing their journey was near its end. Our school buildings began in 1929 with the school and convent built first. The auditorium and school alterations in 1950, the Savio that is no longer in existence was built in 1951 and the Pius with covered walk ways in 1953. The cafeteria was added in 1954 to compliment our education ministry. In 1978, our parish completed and dedicated our beautiful expansion to our House of the Lord - the Parish church. This project included a new alter, more pews to seat a total of 558 worshipers and manly badly needed repairs. A new asphalt parking lot was constructed in front of the church along with lightning and landscaping. In 1994, the Pierre F. Friloux Early Childhood Development Center was completed and now houses eight classes from 3 year old to Kindergarten. On December 10 th, 1995 the parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo began a commitment to our Lord to worship the Blessed Sacrament thus beginning the Adoration Chapel. Several hundred adorers come weekly to the chapel to praise God for His goodness and offer their petitions. All are welcome to visit with our Lord any time of the day or night. The Fred J. Roth Memorial Activity Center housing the new gymnasium along with the renovation of the Auditorium/meeting rooms and additional office space were completed in November of 1997. It is hard to imagine how busy parish like St. Charles Borromeo was able to function without this multi-purpose facility for so many years. In 2001, the interior of the church received a new coat of paint. The ceiling tiles were replaced with brighter white tiles and a lighter color carpet was installed over stronger, better-insulated sub-flooring. The old pews were removed and distributed to those families who donated funds for the new pews. With the growth of several new housing developments in the surrounding in the surrounding area, it was decided that changes needed to be made with our school facilities to provide a more secure environment for our children to grow spiritually, academically, physically and emotionally. Beginning in 1999, we began the 1 st of several phases to construct a two story, sixteen classroom facilities equipped 36 stations computer lab and state of the art science lab. Supporting restrooms, teacher s lounges, and administrative offices are also included in this project. Since the new structure was built over the old Savio Building, the name was changed to recognize the pastor who spearheaded the project before his death. On Trinity Sunday, May 22, 2005, in the presence of countless friends, family dignitaries and parishioners, the education center was dedicated to Monsignor John N. Phuc.

St. Charles Borromeo Church Parish Facts Built on 1770 Spanish land grant Originally was 617.68 acres 600 acres was sold and revenue helped build new mission style church. Patron saint, St. Charles Borromeo, for whom our civil parish is named after. 17 acres was kept for church, school, and cemetery use. 1929- Elementary school and convent was built, opening the first parochial school on the east bank between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The Sisters of the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception were solicited to operate the elementary school. 1939- auditorium/classroom was built (Present day-borromeo Room) 1948- A private, parochial high school, St. Charles Borromeo High School, opened under the direction of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. 1979- St. Charles Borromeo High School closed and St. Charles Catholic High School opened in LaPlace. Present day- St. Charles Borromeo Elementary is the largest parochial private school in parish. 2 nd oldest church parish in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. St. Charles Borromeo Cemetary is one of the oldest in the South, with tombs dating back to 1770. Many of the earlier gravesites fell victim to the Mississippi River. The Little Red Church Tradition holds that the 1740 St. Charles log chapel was destroyed by fire in 1806 and rebuilt the same year. It was replaced by a wood-framed structure and painted red. The Little Red Church became a famous landmark for river travelers. Passengers going downriver were relieved to see the Red Church because it meant New Orleans was only 25 miles away. The crews and roustabouts would be excited because they would be paid off at this point to shouts of, Voila! L Eglise Rouge! or Oh, look, there it is- the Little Red Church. In 1806, the Trepagnier family donated a statue of St. Charles Borromeo that stood on the premises for over one hundred years. This statue is the only tangible link to the name St. Charles Borromeo. The Church of the Germans stood for over one hundred years and was still in place when the present stucco mission style church was built in 1921. pg. 45 Father John Basty arrived as pastor of the Little Red Church in March of 1918. He saw the need to improve conditions and to finance construction of the new church. He immediately built a new rectory, made repairs, and enlarged the Little Red Church. He remained pastor until 1949. Information taken from: Becnel, Joan Weaver, Suzanne Friloux, and Marilyn Mayhall Richoux. St. Charles Parish, Louisiana: a pictorial history.
