Liturgy 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time A October 26, 2014 By asking "which commandment in the law is the greatest," the Pharisees reveal an attitude toward law far different from that of Jesus. Instead of limiting the demand of the law as the Pharisees do to discrete commandments that are kept or not, Jesus teaches that the demand of the law embraces the totality of our relationships with God, self, and neighbor. Love defines our relationships; love is the wellspring of obedience to any commandment. Love is the greatest commandment because it truly is the whole Law of God. When we experience someone reaching out to us in our need, we then tend to be more responsive to others in need. When someone loves us deeply, we learn how to love others more deeply. We learn to live the greatest commandment love from the greatest teacher: Jesus. You were made in God s image and likeness, and every good thing you have comes from God. What does God ask in return? Whatever your answer, is it always easy? Discuss whether love your neighbor includes your arrogant neighbor or just your kind neighbor. Discuss Pope Francis remarks about love and one of his first steps toward that love: What is the law of the People of God? It is the law of love, love for God and love for neighbor according to the new commandment that the Lord left to us (cf. Jn 13:34). It is a love, however, that is not sterile sentimentality or something vague, but the acknowledgment of God as the one Lord of life and, at the same time, the acceptance of the other as my true brother, overcoming division, rivalry, misunderstanding, selfishness; these two things go together. We must ask the Lord to make us correctly understand this law of love. How beautiful it is to love one another as true brothers and sisters. How beautiful! June 12, 2013 Papal Audience, St. Peter s Square All Souls Day and prayers for the deceased. Throughout October and November, we will be collecting your prayer requests for deceased family members and friends. They will be placed on the altar during November for our prayers. Next weeks Readings The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed November 2, 2014 First Reading Wisdom 3:1-9 No torment shall touch the souls of the just. Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want. Second Reading Romans 5:5-11 Justified by His blood, we will be saved through Christ from the wrath. Gospel John 6:37-40 Everyone who believes in the Son will have eternal life. Today let us take comfort from these scriptures that can bring hope and healing to sorrowing hearts. For we know that God s love is stronger even than death, and we have Jesus Christ s resurrection as proof of that. So let us renew our faith that all who believe in Jesus Christ will have eternal life. Saint of the Month Saint Margaret Clitherow 1556-1586 Virtue: Reverence To show reverence toward someone means to have great awe or respect for that person. This particular virtue reminds us of God s greatness the majesty, splendor, and glory of God that makes Him alone worthy of our compete adoration and worship. When we reflect on the perfect holiness of God and, by extension, the holiness that He bestows on the Blessed Mother, the angels, saints, and all persons, places, and objects dedicated to Him the virtue of reverence seems the most appropriate response: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord. Margaret Middleton Clitherow, also known as the Pearl of York, was born during very tumultuous times in England, when the persecution of the Catholic Church in that country was at its height. Although a Catholic queen named Mary Tudor ruled the country at the beginning of Margaret s life, Elizabeth I reigned during the end of Margaret s life, and it was under her rule that Saint Margaret would be condemned to death for her faith. Raised as a Protestant, Margaret joined the Catholic Church not too long after her marriage to prosperous butcher, John Clitherow. John was a Protestant, but he had a brother who was a Catholic priest and was very supportive of his wife s faith, even allowing their children to be raised as Catholics. All during her married life, Saint Margaret made her home a place of refuge for the Catholic priests who had to offer the Mass in secret for the Catholic faithful, facing execution if they were caught. Many of the Catholics of Saint Margaret s native area of Yorkshire, England, knew of and supported this holy wife and mother s determination to protect priests so that they could continue to administer the sacraments. When the civil authorities finally discovered what was happening, they arrested Margaret for giving protection to Catholic priests who were considered traitors and seducers of the Queen s subjects. Warned that to save her life she needed to plead guilty or stand trial, she responded, I know of no offense whereof I should confess myself guilty. Having made no offence, I need no trial. Pregnant with her fourth child, St. Margaret was executed on Good Friday, 1586, by having large weights laid upon her until she suffocated. Because of her faith, Yorkshire remains one of the most Catholic areas in England.
