Saint John s Spirit St. John's Episcopal Church Crawfordsville, Indiana The Rev. Todd Kleffman, Rector (765) 362-2331 www.stjohnscville.org February 2010 Editor: Cindy Turner newsletter@stjohnscville.org Rector s Article Lent: A Time to Reflect and Prepare Ash Wednesday Reflection Inquiry and Confirmation Preparation Preparation for Baptism Book Study Reflection Wednesdays: Conversations With John Ash Wednesday Reflection Lent provides us with several opportunities to reflect on our lives and discover how we might walk closer with Christ. Ash Wednesday uses the ancient symbols of sorrow and mourning to remind us that we will not live forever, and that we must decide to part with futile, death-bound concerns in order to live better quality lives, which are more focused on eternal concerns like love and mercy. Ash Wednesday Services will be held on February 17 at 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. Inquiry and Confirmation Preparation Lent allows us the opportunity to learn more about our Christian faith through inquiry or confirmation sessions. Those who wish to join St. John s, those who wish to confirm the promises made by parents at Baptism, and those who wish to renew their faith may join in special Confirmation Sessions held each Sunday in Lent from Noon to 2 p.m. in the parish library. Anyone 16 and older is welcome to bring a sack lunch and beverage and attend. This year, the Deanery Confirmation Service will be held on Saturday April 10 in at 11 a.m. in St. John s Episcopal Church in Lafayette. Preparation for Baptism Anyone desiring baptism for themselves or their children should contact Father Todd at the church or at (765)376-2314 to make arrangements for baptism preparation. Book Study Reflection Wednesdays: Conversations With John During the Wednesdays of Lent (with the exception of Ash Wednesday), anyone can sign up for a Wednesday Night Book Study running from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Snacks and drinks will NOT be served in order to honor Lenten fasting. This year we will discuss Conversations With John. The cost of the book is $12.00 per copy. Conversations is a small penetrating look into the Gospel of John and its meaning. A very fitting read for a church named St. John s. If anyone needs help to defray some or part of the cost of a book, please, see Father Todd.

Christian Education Children Welcome to a new year at St John's. The Christian Education ministry at our church is so important to our future. But sadly the future for Jim and I is uncertain as of January 1 -- we will be leaving for parts unknown as early as April. I hope all of you will prayerfully consider being part of the Children's program. We have a growing group of children full of love and inspiration for any adult that can share their time and talent. Schedule-- Please bring canned soup for the FISH pantry Jan 31 Epiphany play practice at 9:15 am Feb 7 Epiphany play at service Feb 14 The love of Jesus Peace, Kathy Gary ( 765-361-1468 ) Youth Group Calling all Youth-4 th grade to Senior high-sunday February 14 12:30pm to 2:00pm: We will be having a design planning session for the Youth room. Come vote on the theme for your room (we will be choosing from the Upper Room, heaven/clouds, water/baptism, and the Sacraments). We will also schedule the date for painting and decorating the room in the spring. Pizza will be served! Help for Haiti If you feel moved to make a monetary doantion to help those struggling to survive in Haiti, there are ways to do so through Episcopal Relief and Development. The fastest way is to go to the St. John's website and click on links. Then go to the Indianapolis Diocese. There is information on Haiti on the first page. There is a place to donate, using credit cards. At this site there is also an informational bulletin page with a coupon at the bottom. You can print it out and mail your donation to the address provided. Another way is to make a donation at church, on the memo line of your check write: Episcopal Relief and Development/Haiti. Shrove Tuesday Pancakes The Annual Pancake Supper is less than three weeks away! Plan to join the parish community at 5:30-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 February 2010. The Parish Life Committee needs volunteers to flip pancakes, grill bacon and sausage, set up, clean up and provide music and antics for this event. Please email Nancy Bennett (njbennett@purdue.edu; 765.376.4833) to let her know how you d like to contribute to this yummy event. Outreach The February Outreach project is an ingathering for the Crisis Shelter. They have a desperate need for paper products - toilet tissue, paper towels, and any other paper products. They could use cleaning supplies as well, but their big need is for the paper items. It won t be a surprise to know that their clientele is up and their donations are down, so let s help out as much as possible. Please deposit your contributions in the large boxes in the hallway between the church and Whitlock Hall. Shepherds Need Donations Consider a unique variation on re-gifting! The Shepherds invite anyone from the congregation who has extra, un-used greeting cards of any kind -- birthday, get-well, anniversary, Christmas -- to give those cards a second chance to be sent out into the world. Bring them to the church office to be placed in a special box for our 21 shepherds to use with their flocks. You will be in future touch with someone -- anonymously! Judy Spencer Annual Meeting Update The Annual Meeting was held Sunday, January 17, at which time a new class of Vestry members was elected, as well as Diocesan delegates and alternates. Those elected to the Vestry were Jane Gallagher, Jill Lamberton, and Paul Moehling. Diocesan delegates are Marc & Helen Hudson and alternates are Mark & Meribeth. Charles Barbara Easterling Carole Meyer

Altar Guild News The St. John's Flower Chart was circulated at the Annual Meeting. Parishioners signed up to donate flowers for a Sunday service during 2010. Sunday dates are still available in May, June, July and September. If you did not attend the Annual Meeting, the Flower Chart is now hanging in Whitlock Hall. Please sign up. You will then be contacted a week before your commitment Sunday. Altar Guild would welcome new volunteers to our group. Training is provided and members work in teams. Theme: "A Heart Like Jesus"; Song: "Since Jesus Came Into My Heart"; Jeremiah 24:7: "I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart."
