Greetings Everyone, October has arrived and with it more fun and activities at the church. I hope you take the time to look at all the wonderful things that are coming up, not just in this month but in the months to follow. However there are two important celebrations I would like to lift up that are occurring in the month of October. The first celebration I would like to highlight is occurring on October 21 st in Marquette and that is the installation of our new bishop Katherine Finegan. This is quite an event for our synod. Personally I have never witnessed a Bishop s installation services and I have heard it will be a grand service. In fact the presiding Bishop of the entire ELCA will be present for the services and will preach. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to witness such an event and it is open to all who would like to attend. Please see more details about the installation of the bishop within the newsletter or call the church offices. The second celebration I wanted to highlight is more of a worldwide Lutheran one which is the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. Though we will celebrate the event in worship on Sunday October 29 th it will actually be October 31 st (Halloween night) which will mark 500 years since Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of the castle church and sparked a revolution that has reverberated for 500 years and will hopefully continue to reverberate for 500 more. I look forward to celebrating this big anniversary with everyone during our worship service on the 29 th. As I reflect on these events I can t help but think of the many blessings that come from having good leadership in our church. As we celebrate the installation of a new bishop, we lift her up to be our synodical Leader. Over the past 500 years the Lutheran Church has enjoyed wonderful leadership which has allowed us to be where we are today. Now Bishop Finnegan will exercise her fine leadership skills as we move into the future. However, it is my firm belief that every good leader needs all the prayers we can give them. The duty of prayer falls to all of us in the congregation. So I encourage everyone to hold our New Bishop in his or her prayers as she takes on the role of leading our synod. May God s blessing continue to touch you, your family and our Lutheran family in the Northern Great Lakes Synod.
