CHART, June 2010 Christ Church 1355 Northern Boulevard Manhasset, NY 11030 Letter from the Rector Dear Friends, June 1, 2010 June is one of the transitional months; it begins with a flourish of activities and ends with school closing and vacations starting. June at Christ Church will follow that pattern as well. For those who receive the Chart by e-mail, please note that Christ Church will host the community Memorial Day service at 10:00 AM this coming Sunday (May 30). The members of the American Legion will be our special guests at the service. I have written at some length about Memorial Day in the Chart and urge all of us to note Memorial Day with the solemnity it deserves. This Sunday is also Trinity Sunday. It was once said that there are things that are better appreciated than explained. The Trinity fits into that category. The early church was mindful of its monotheistic roots from Judaism and its appreciation of the manifestation of God in the forms of Father/Creator, Son/Redeemer and Holy Spirit/Sanctifier. It was difficult for some to understand how one God could be three and three persons of the Trinity could be one. It is, indeed, a mystery to be appreciated. On Sunday, June 13 we will end our Church School year. There will be special year end presentations to students and teachers and the service will be followed by a parish picnic for all (not just for the Church School). Please sign-up for the picnic at church or call the parish office. Beginning on June 20, the summer schedule will be in effect. Actually the only change is that there is no Church School and no choir. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Please do not forget the 6:00 PM service if you are away over the weekend. We have that service so you can use weekends for re-creation and still have an opportunity for worship and spiritual reflection. With the church air conditioned, you do not need to be concerned about comfort at Christ Church during the summer months. Starting on July 7 (Wednesday) we will have our Home Communion and pot luck dinners in homes around the parish. The first Home Communion will be at the rectory. The service of Holy Communion begins at 7:00 PM and dinner usually commences at 7:30 PM. Finally, the weekday services remain unchanged in July and August. Morning Prayer is said in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at 7:00 AM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and at 9:00 AM on Wednesday. The Holy Eucharist is celebrated on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM. Please do look inside the Chart for further news of the life of Christ Church. This comes with my best wishes. Sincerely, The Very Rev d David B. Lowry Parish Notes: On Memorial Day

This year Christ Church will host the community service for Memorial Day and will welcome members of the American Legion to our worship. In many ways Memorial Day (as well as American Independence Day) has become a vacation day rather than a day of national remembrance and solemnity. However, it is appropriate for us as a church and Manhasset as a community to remember and give thanks for those who have fought and continue to fight for the freedoms with which we have been so abundantly blessed. The United States is in the midst of the two longest wars in its history. They are also two of the most unorthodox wars because they are not traditional wars between nations; they are multi-national and non-national wars over market terrorism. It is our blessing and our duty to mark Memorial Day with a period of solemn remembrance rather than just with picnics, shopping and drams of the beach. Volunteers Needed As our Summer Schedule begins the first Sunday in June and we will need volunteers to provide Hospitality/Fellowship for the Sundays in Summer. Please use the sign up sheet in the rear of the church and pick a Sunday to share with your church family. Around the Parish In the last week of May we celebrate the birthdays of three very special members of the Christ Church family. Richard Scheib has turned 96 years-old, and Amy Angus and Blanche Kambourian have had notable birthdays (with numbers undisclosed). We wish then many more happy birthdays! We also note our high school graduates. All are women this year. Victoria Bindert will be headed off to Haverford College; Jasmine Blocker to Princeton University; Margo Cyprus to Syracuse University; Megan Lightcap to University of Virginia; and Marlena McGill to McGill University in Montreal. We wish them happiness and great success! Parish House Plans After sixty years of struggling with what to do with a parish house that was built to be a school and never became one, we now hope there is some holy light at the end of the tunnel. There is a very creative plan to renovate the parish house and to build a free standing bank on the area where the blue house now stands. The new Christ Church parish hall will be within the current gymnasium. The stage will be removed and the forty feet on the north end of the gymnasium (that is a space approximately 40 x 40 ) will be built into a two story office and classroom space. The old kitchen will be subdivided into a new, well-appointed smaller kitchen and two bathrooms. The fifty feet of the gymnasium on the south side (where the large windows are located) will remain as is (although renovated) with it majestic cathedral ceiling and will be a 2000 square foot common room. The remainder of the parish house will be made into commercial space. The tenants will be compatible with the church and the building will have an elevator and full ADA compliant with a modern HVAC system throughout. This plan will allow Christ Church to have usable and commodious space for parish activities and create an endowment to support the ministry of Christ Church into the future. Alleluia! Fund The Diocese of Long Island has established an Alleluia! Fund to support the development of new ministries throughout the Diocese. Our new bishop has many plans to revitalize the life of the Diocese. Our support for the Alleluia! Fund will allow the Diocese to move forward with important initiatives to grow ministries throughout Nassau County (as well as Brooklyn, Queens and Suffolk). Your generous support is appreciated. Envelopes are available in the church. Also, if you call the church office we will be happy to send you an envelope.
