1 of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM Loving Our Neighbor As Ourself: The Second Great Commandment [5-2-, DKeeler] Wed Svc [Hymns 2, 17, 458] Wednesday, May 2, 20 SECTION I BIBLE 1 Matt. 22:2 Jesus(to Jesus),2 said, 4 when, 5-40 2 Jesus 2 said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. 4 when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 5 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 7 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 8 40 This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 2 1 2 4 5 Gen. 4:1-1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 8 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

2 of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM 10 11 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 1 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 1 2 I John :1-,10-,-2 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 1 17 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18 1 20 21 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 22 2 4 4 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. John 1:-5 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 5 5 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John :-11,1

of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM 10 11 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 1 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 25 Luke 10:25-7 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 2 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 2 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 0 1 2 4 5 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 7 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. 7 7 I John 4:-8,11-1 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 11 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 1 8 1 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. Phil. 2:1-5 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the

4 of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM 2 4 5 Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: SCIENCE AND HEALTH 1 21 2 0 5:1 4 SH 1:1-22 The substance of all devotion is the reflection and demonstration of divine Love, healing sickness and destroying sin. Our Master said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." SH 4:8-10 Pride, envy, or jealousy seems on most occasions to be the master of ceremonies, ruling out primitive Christianity. SH 58:2- Genesis iv. 1. And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord [Jehovah]. This account is given, not of immortal man, but of mortal man, and of sin which is temporal. As both mortal man and sin have a beginning, they must consequently have an end, while the sinless, real man is eternal. Eve's declaration, "I have gotten a man from the Lord," supposes God to be the author of sin and sin's progeny. This false sense of existence is fratricidal. In the words of Jesus, it (evil, devil) is "a murderer from the beginning." Error begins by reckoning life as separate from Spirit, thus sapping the foundations of immortality, as if life and immortality were something which matter can both give and take away. Benevolence hindered Erroneous conception What can be the standard of good, of Spirit, of Life, or of Truth, if they produce their opposites, such as evil, matter, error, and death? God could never impart an element of evil, and man possesses nothing which he has not derived from God. How then has man a basis for wrong-doing? Whence does he obtain the propensity or power to do evil? Has Spirit resigned to matter the government of the universe? SH 541:14-18,-1 Only one standard Genesis iv. 8. Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

5 of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM 18 The erroneous belief that life, substance, and intelligence can be material ruptures the life and brotherhood of man at the very outset. 542:1 5 21 54:1 18 7 0 Genesis iv. 10, 11. And He [Jehovah] said,... The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto Me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth. The belief of life in matter sins at every step. SH 542:21-22, -2,2 Sin will receive its full penalty, both for what it is and for what it does. To envy's own hell, justice consigns the lie which, to advance itself, breaks God's commandments. The sinful misconception of Life as something less than God, having no truth to support it, falls back upon itself. This error, after reaching the climax of suffering, yields to Truth and returns to dust; but it is only mortal man and not the real man, who dies. The image of Spirit cannot be effaced, since it is the idea of Truth and changes not, but becomes more beautifully apparent at error's demise. SH 88:-14(to 2nd.),18-20 How are veritable ideas to be distinguished from illusions? By learning the origin of each. Ideas are emanations from the divine Mind. Thoughts, proceeding from the brain or from matter, are offshoots of mortal mind; they are mortal material beliefs. Ideas are spiritual, harmonious, and eternal. To love one's neighbor as one's self, is a divine idea; but this idea can never be seen, felt, nor understood through the physical senses. SH 8:28-0; :5 We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are. The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of Climax of suffering Illusions not ideas Searching the heart this asking? Do we pursue the old selfishness, satisfied with having prayed for something better, though we give no evidence of the sincerity of our requests by living consistently with our prayer? If selfishness has given place to kindness, we shall regard our neighbor unselfishly, and bless them that curse us; but we shall never meet this great duty simply by asking that it may be done. There is a cross to be taken up before we can enjoy the fruition Summit of aspiration

of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM 8 0 20:1 10 11 18 21 of our hope and faith. SH 205:22-20: When we realize that there is one Mind, the divine law of loving our neighbor as ourselves is unfolded; whereas a belief in many ruling minds hinders man's normal drift towards the one Mind, one God, and leads human thought into opposite channels where selfishness reigns. Selfishness tips the beam of human existence towards the side of error, not towards Truth. Denial of the oneness of Mind throws our weight into the scale, not of Spirit, God, good, but of matter. When we fully understand our relation to the Divine, we can have no other Mind but His, no other Love, wisdom, or Truth, no other sense of Life, and no consciousness of the existence of matter or error. SH 40:2 Redemption from selfishness One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, "Love thy neighbor as thyself;" annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed. SH 50:10-1 (to neighbor) Heaven represents harmony, and divine Science interprets the Principle of heavenly harmony. The great miracle, to human sense, is divine Love, and the grand necessity of existence is to gain the true idea of what constitutes the kingdom of heaven in man. This goal is never reached while we hate our neighbor SH 55:1 True estimate of God's messenger My weary hope tries to realize that happy day, when man shall recognize the Science of Christ and love his neighbor as himself, when he shall realize God's omnipotence and the healing power of the divine Love in what it has done and is doing for mankind. The promises will be fulfilled. The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing. 7 of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM Hymn 2:0-4 Hymn 2 Attributed to Thomas Cotterill Adapted MARTYRDOM Hugh Wilson 2 Our God is Love, and all His sons His image bear, we know; The heart with love to God inspired, With love to man will glow. Teach us to love each other, Lord, As we are loved by Thee; None who are truly born of God Can live in enmity. Heirs of the same immortal bliss, Our hopes and aims the same, In bonds of love our hearts unite, To praise His holy name. So may we all with one accord Learn how true Christians love; And glorify our Father's grace, And seek that grace to prove. Hymn 17:0- (to 4th,) Hymn 17 Margaret Morrison INTEGER VITAE Friedrich F. Flemming Love one another, word of revelation; Love frees from error's thrall, Love is liberation. Love's way the Master trod; He that loves shall walk with God. Love is the royal way. Love knows no evil, neither shade of sadness; Love casts out every fear, lifts the heart to gladness. Love heals our every ill, All the law does love fulfill. Love is our answered prayer. Love now is dawning over every nation; Showing true brotherhood, publishing salvation, Love bids all discord cease.

8 of 8 /1/20 5:5 AM Conquering hate, enthroning peace, Hymn 458:0-4 Hymn 458 The Voice of Love Fenella Bennetts Based on I Corinthians 1 O WALY, WALY Scottish folk song Arranged by Fenella Bennetts Words Copyright 2008 Fenella Bennetts. Used by permission. Though I may speak with moving words, Which can inspire the heart of man, But have no love to seal their worth, They are but emptiness and sham. Though I may give my worldly goods Without a thought of self or gain, Unless they bear the fruits of love They are as clouds without their rain. Though I may search the deepest books, Companion with the wisest men, God s loving voice still calls to me, It bids me turn and look again. Now I would learn to know this Love Through meek and patient ministry, Until my life has grown anew And Love is All-in-all to me.
